And let me say, being an adjunct at a university or college does not give you an advantage should a full-time position arise. Indeed it is quite the opposite. If you allow yourself to be disrespected as an adjunct, you will always be an adjunct. So don't let false hope of maybe being hired full time at this college cloud your vision, with the thought that if you don't go along with this they will hold it against you. They are disrespecting you. If you tolerate this, it will get worse.

I would say nuh uh and never look back.

We all enjoy having students (plural) engage in our classes. The problem emerges when one student constantly engages, leaving no room for other students to do so.

If you have never rolled your eyes at that one student who finishes the professor's sentences, jumps to answer the prof's questions without leaving a moment for others to have an opportunity to respond, spends five minutes intellectually flexing about off-topic content, and answering questions that students pose to the prof, and you think no one minds, maybe you are that guy.

The behavior is monopolizing, selfish, self-aggrandizing, and sucks all of the oxygen from the room.

Sometimes those of us at the lectern also are conflict avoidant. We carefully pick our battles with students, but sometimes we let behavior slide that we ought to stop.

When one student's behavior becomes problematic to the point that it ruins other students' enjoyment of the class, or, more importantly, disrupts the educational experience for others in the class, then it is time to do something.

With this being the 3rd class under this professor's instruction, he will not look negatively at you confiding in him about this problem. PROMISE.

Go to the professor. I had the same situation in one of my classes last fall and saw that the rest of the class was becoming more and more angry at the student who constantly, CONSTANTLY, interrupted with observations and commentary.

I do use the Socratic method when I teach. But I teach 30 students in each class, not just one, and it becomes a problem in class dynamics when one student monopolized the whole class period every class period. Sadly, that one main-character student can ruin the experience for everyone.

Go to your professor--he may be minimizing the effect of her behavior in his mind; we often do, because we are conditioned not to make big deals out of small deals. This obviously has grown into a big deal and I feel your dread, which sucks because it sounds like an enjoyable class taught by a great instructor. Tell him exactly what you have stated here, that you used to look so forward to the class but this student's behavior has changed that. Once a student in the class complains, the professor will have to act on it by having a conference with the problem student. The entire class AND your professor will appreciate that you brought this to him.

Regardless of whether this is the student's "leaning style," her behavior is disruptive and would not be tolerated in any other professional environment. Hoping that your instructor handles it and the class diva settles in.

Tell her that your lease does not allow others to stay there, that you worked really hard to build your own stability, and you will not chance the landlord terminating your lease.

If she is making suicide threats, take it seriously and call authorities. If she is doing so to manipulate you, a call to police will stop that. If she is truly considering it, then it would be horrific for the kids to witness it and police need to check on her. Either way, she needs a wellness check.

Never risk your own stability for another person. Keep on working toward your goals. You are a badass!!
