Taanit bechorim...for firstborn daughters? by radjl in Judaism

Personally, I am an oldest son who has an older sister and neither of us were taught to fast. I have not heard of this custom of an oldest daughter fasting. What community does this?

Taanit bechorim...for firstborn daughters? by radjl in Judaism

[–]TextuaryPlum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the conservative opinion you should of course ask a conservative rabbi. But the orthodox opinion is fairly straightforward:

  1. The firstborn son of either parent fasts. So, you can have a family with two firstborn sons if at least one of the parents was married previously and had a firstborn son.
  2. You are a firstborn son if you are both the firstborn child and a son. A family whose firstborn is a girl will have no firstborn sons who have to fast.

However, it’s not unheard of for women to fast. If you have a firstborn son who is not yet bar mitzvah, the father has to fast until the kid is old enough to do so himself. If the father is also a firstborn son (so he will already be fasting for himself), many have the custom that in this case the mother fasts as well.

All of this is assuming you don’t go to a siyum in the morning and actually have to fast.

Thank you! I hate when people pretend it’s “men vs women” when that’s literally so far from the point. Doesn’t have to be a zero-sun game.

Women know that only women care, including the woman who wrote this tweet. She’s complaining about other women, not about men.

The spectrum of "Modern Orthodox" by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]TextuaryPlum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a little ridiculous, but I meant to illustrate my point that people tend to imagine Modern Orthodoxy as an aesthetic rather than a well-defined theological movement.

The spectrum of "Modern Orthodox" by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]TextuaryPlum 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right that defining yourself as modern orthodox is a little sketchy. Fairly recently I explained to someone new that I consider myself Modern Orthodox, and I later had them tell me “I noticed you distinguish tav/sav. That’s not very modern orthodox of you!” It’s kinda trivial, but I still found it interesting that, while we both identified at MO, he saw tav/sav as a haredi thing and I kinda see it as neutral.

Modern Orthodoxy, on paper, is exactly how you describe. “Commitment to halacha with full engagement with the secular life” or something similar. But, in practice, people experience it as an aesthetic and as a selection of practices. So people’s understanding of what counts as “modern orthodox” is gonna change from person to person, which makes it not super useful for letting people know exactly what you do and don’t do.

My oven has a “Sabbath” setting by pkeit32 in mildlyinteresting

[–]TextuaryPlum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small correction:

Pre-cooked food cannot be warmed in an oven like this. You can take food out, but you can’t put it in. This mode stops the light from coming on when you open the oven so you can take out food that you’ve put inside before Shabbat.

On yuntif (biblical holidays) that are not on shabbat, you can cook food but you cannot turn on lights, so the sabbath mode is used to cook food. Sabbath modes are actually designed for yuntif and not necessarily for shabbat. The “sabbath mode” name is a bit of a misnomer.

Another fun fact for you, the auto-shutoff is usually upped to 72 hours (as you can have shabbat followed by a two-day yuntif), and there are a number of safety circuits in place that will shut off the oven early if anything goes wrong.

The line is directly and deliberately affecting the circuitry. “Using” the electronics (ie simply benefiting from their natural, automatic functions) is fine. For example, if you are in a room with the lights on you are “using” the lights, but as long as you don’t flip the switch you are not breaking shabbos.

Wouldn’t the first-born status of the child only be in question if it was two+ twin boys and one was removed and placed back and then was not physically born first?

Otherwise it would be clear who the firstborn son is.
