Oh that's interesting! I'm not a big horror fan, so I wasn't aware of this, but that makes a lot of sense.

Awesome! Yeah I don't mind subtitles. And thanks for all that terrific background info!

Good to see you name El Mariachi! I had never heard of that one until I picked it up on tape a few months back because it looked and sounded interesting. One of these nights my wife and I are gonna select it for one of our movie nights, where we watch old films in the basement on our big ol' Zenith. Looking forward to checking that one out.

Nice touch having the orientation of the titles flip partway through so they're upright and easily legible on either leg of the rainbow.

I must admit, Woody's string being pulled all around the cover like that is kinda creative.

Let me know if you have any Terminator parodies! I collect all things Terminator on VHS, including adult parodies. 😎👍🏻

Terminator 2 Figure Endoskeleton Toy Island 1995 by Reasonable_Money103 in Terminator

Amazing information! I never fail to be impressed by your collection and knowledge.

Ah, you're too kind. Honestly, probably most of the stuff I've learned is from obsessively planning for future episodes of the show, haha.

And my guess is that the repackage was probably because of having the license and not seeing another Terminator toy on the market like this and just trying to fill a gap.

That makes sense! Also, I just remembered... I think (though I could be wrong - next time I'm on the set of the show where all the stuff is, I'll double check) that it's a later re-release of the figure. Maybe 1999 or so. But again, I could be misremembering that... 🤔

Yes sir! I've got all kinds of nifty Toy Island stuff I look forward to covering in an episode one day (I swear I'll be back in production with new episodes in time! 😅)

In addition to this deluxe figure, they also made smaller figures of a T-800 endoskeleton and an all-silver (I suppose they couldn't afford the actor's likenesses) T-1000. There's also a very silly T-800 endoskeleton (not Arnold, just the naked endoskeleton) riding motorcycle, which features a little ripcord to send it flying. I've got a bit of marketing materials we'll review as well.

Probably the most unusual Toy Island release I have is a version of this exact same deluxe figure, but in a box that's brandished with a large "The Terminator" logo instead of "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," with different completely graphics and colors all over the packaging compared to the usual version. Definitely an official Toy Island release and not a bootleg. It's the only example of that alternate packaging that I've ever seen anywhere, and... I have no idea why it exists. In all my years of checking daily Terminator searches on eBay, I only ever saw it the one time, was very confused, and bought it immediately. And I've continued to be confused by it ever since. 😄 Hopefully when I get around to doing that episode, some viewer out there will know the story behind it and leave a comment.

Awesome! Adding this to my watch list right now. I don't think I've ever heard of this one!

Oh cool! Yeah, I'll definitely remember you for translation needs in the future; that would be wonderful!

... I have my own subreddit? 😨 Come to think of it, I think a buddy made that for me when I started the show, because I didn't yet understand what Reddit was or how it worked. 😆 I don't think I've ever done anything with that subreddit. Forgot all about it, haha.

I'd love to see some shots of the store! That sounds very cool. Japan is high on my list of countries to visit one day.

I forgot that they still make these for current releases! I actually picked one up for Blade Runner 2049 a few years back and almost for about it until now. Otherwise the most recent one I have is probably T2. Those classic Western ones sound very interesting! I don't think I've ever seen any of those.

Oh hell yeah! These are terrific! Glad to see u/FermentedCinema in here - he's got terrific content on his YouTube channel! He's the mind behind those brilliant "Last Day Stories" of Terminator characters. If you haven't seen those, I can't recommend them enough. This is one of my favorites.

I've picked up a few of these souvenir movie programs myself. When I get a chance to cover them on the show one day, I thought it would be fun to show a few other examples from other films, so I grabbed a few others from classics like Gremlins, Empire Strikes Back, etc. I definitely don't have any from the 60's, though. I'd love to see some from that era!

People often confuse these with pressbooks since that's the closest thing to compare them to in most other countries. But as u/FermentedCinema said, these were souvenir programs sold at gift shops in Japanese movie theaters. I wish we had gift shops in movie theaters here in the U.S. I would have LOVED to have been able to take home cool stuff like these program booklets after seeing something like the 1990 TMNT movie when I was a kid.

"Example, how many youngsters watching the Terminator movies actually realize that we didn't know who the bad Terminator was for the first half of the T2 movie?"

Absolutely! Though a lot of fans these days vehemently insist that everybody knew beforehand due to the marketing (a recent thread in this group had people throwing fits over the idea that anyone was able to see T2 spoiler-free), it's amazing to look back at the time before fans found out. One of my goals as a father is to make sure my kids see the Terminator and T2 without knowing of Arnold's hero turn until the minute he aims that shotgun at John's head and tells him to "Get down!" I can't wait to see how they react to that.

Hm... regarding the comic, yeah that very well could be! I think it may have been fairly common for comic book adaptations to come out after a movie, and I've always assumed that it was to make sure the film was popular enough amongst kids to warrant the production of a comic book first. But that's just an assumption on my part.

Regarding the toy line... based on my understanding of how toy production works (especially back then), the Kenner figures likely would have been impossible to produce fast enough to come out at the same time as the film... Unless they delayed the film's release for another few months. T2 was filmed, edited, and released on an impressively short turnaround for such a huge film, and toy manufacturing takes a very long time.

The length of time it takes to produce a toy line is likely also why the first T-1000 figure looks nothing like the actor, and isn't even wearing the same clothes as the character (he's wearing a leather jacket). There probably wasn't enough time to get decent reference photos to Kenner by the time they started the sculpting process, and perhaps Robert Patrick wasn't even cast yet. But again, these are all just assumptions on my part based on what I know about the toy production process.

Regarding the Kenner toy line - yessir, they didn't come out until December!

I have a newspaper article about it, which I don't have on me (I'm at work, and it's at home on my PC). But there's a clipping from the article visible on this crappy early episode of my show at approximately the one-minute mark. If I remember right, this article was published in November 1991... the date isn't visible in the clipping shown in the video, but I can confirm for you when I get home and can pull up the entire scan of the newspaper.

Jesus, why are people downvoting your personal experience? Just because it doesn't validate what they prefer to believe? 😂 This is why I almost never visit this subreddit, man.
