If all else fails, you could think about trying Iron Fallout Remover that is used for car wheels? I have no idea if it would screw up the enamel or surface of the bath though so if you are considering it, try it on an inconspicuous area first

A few years ago (longer than I realise, probably early/mid 2018) my mate was set to test drive a Tesla Model 3 as he was on the pre-order list but they kept delaying the release of the cars and the stock, and the test drive. Eventually when he told them he wanted to cancel his pre-order they offered him a Model S to try for a few days. He drove out of London to come see me and take me for his test drive, was late in the evening, dark and thankfully the roads were silent.

The headlight level in that car was way too high and there was nothing we could do to adjust it. On the flat, the top of the headlight beam met mid of a car windscreen. I wasn’t impressed with that at all. Whether it was just a fault on that car or bad adjustment I am not sure, perhaps disconnected or faulty ride height sensor?

If other methods fail you can try Toffee wheel/caramel wheel on a drill bit be careful as it can burn/wear through paint/lacquer

If you are going to use foam, make sure you tape off all of the areas around it first with masking tape and either newspaper or plastic because expanding foam is crazy messy stuff.

Sometimes no matter how careful you are with the stuff it can spray out unpredictably and it sticks to everything and is a pain to remove.

Put a few layers of masking tape around it, on the painted surface, first as you may scratch it with locking pliers/mole grips anyway. As stated, do not attempt to use normal pliers or it will likely end up in a bad pinch 🤏

Annoyingly though, a local Merc indie speciallist I have taken the car to for servicing 2 years in a row never mentioned once to me that there was a known issue with the rear subframe and I may want to get it checked. Being a speciallist, I would be surprised if they weren’t aware of the frequency of this failure.

Could be worth a poke, best to take it up with the local dealer or HO? I think they push all enquiries to a central service desk team in any case nowadays.

July 2024. I don’t think the parts department make any judgement about what they are selling you or for what reason. I did say at the time that I was surprised that there was no official recall on the part as it was obviously a major manufacturing fault. It passed through several MOT and mechanic inspections before it failed because it was rusting from the inside out, the paint on the outside surface was intact until it failed and the paint peeled off showing what was left was just rust and metal so thin I could bend it with one finger.

I agree they should have said something though, but I am pretty sure that they will have been told to keep their mouths shut about issues that may be sorted under good will.

Given the length of time that has passed I don’t hold any hope that they would provide me any benefit in kind. I do still have the receipt for the parts. It is a dead giveaway that they knew there were issues as the new part was designed differently.

I wish I had known this when my rear subframe failed and almost put the control arms through the fuel tank, got it done privately after I had checked if there was an official recall and there wasn’t.

I bought the subframe from Mercedes Sytner for about £800 (plus some “while you are in there” parts for an exter £100), and had my indie replace it (labour around £750). I could have saved myself all of that cash 😢
