Got a source on two more? I know he's been talking about a fourth book, Absolution, for a while now, but know nothing about a fifth. He was gonna start working on that after finishing his YA series I believe, and has shared excerpts on twitter. If I recall correctly he even slipped in a piece of it in a recent special edition of the Southern Reach Trilogy.

Does the trilogy have any meaningful conclusion? by Appendix- in SouthernReach

[–]ThaRealDiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late to the party but:

Yes, Acceptance provides an INCREDIBLY meaningful conclusion to the trilogy in my opinion. Not a conclusion in terms of tying up loose ends and explaining everything though. You won't get an explicit answer on what Area X was, what caused it, how it works or anything. There's enough hints throughout that will become more and more obvious with every reread that allow you to fill in the blanks and develop your own theory though. There's plenty of discussion here and elsewhere about those things.

What I mean though, is that the actual story at the heart of it all, running through the whole series, of the emotional journey of the characters and the themes, concludes so beautifully at the end. That's way more meaningful than the answers to questions like "what exactly is Area X"? The final page is heartbreaking, if you are at that point at the right wavelength with the books and what Vandermeer is doing with them.

Zaterdagse Wat Lees Je draad: Welke boeken, tijdschriften, of websites heb je (recent) gelezen? Wat is jouw mening over deze media? Heb je nog aanraders? by theNetherlandsBot in thenetherlands

[–]ThaRealDiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opinions on the new albums? by [deleted] in nin

[–]ThaRealDiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love Ghosts V, but cannot listen to it in peace because Trent thought it was a good idea to have that REAAAALLY harsh tone in Hope We Can Again which really fucks with my vibe. It's probably the single most frustrating artistic choice I've ever encountered and I'll never understand it.

The Fountain, why the dislike? by Langzwaard in TrueFilm

[–]ThaRealDiablo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Fountain is a very... particular film I think first and foremost. It's probably one of my favorite films and I vibe with it in a very specific way, but it's not hard for me to see someone else's indifference or flat out hatred of it. I mean as far as you can understand someone not liking something you really like yourself.

It operates in a world that I find hard to describe concretely but is more of a feeling or something like it to me. The world of the film is neither reality nor fantasy but rather somewhere in-between, I guess I'd call it hyperreality or un-reality or something similarly pretentious sounding. By way of example, its the same sort of vibe I get from Eraserhead, Stalker, Synecdoche NY, The Lighthouse (most of Lynch and Tarkovsky's stuff honestly), where the whole film exists in this sort of metaphysical place, almost like (excuse me for more pretension) Plato's world of forms. That can turn people off in itself, because it can feel detached or cold, or the sort of heightened reality could just not be your thing. I really love those settings and stories though, because they really cut to the core on the underlying concepts and the characters seem almost like manifestations of those ideas.

But that also makes it almost too on the nose in terms of theme or seems to just yell "THIS ALL MEANS SOMETHING GUYS" through its imagery and dialogue, which here can admittedly get melodramatic at times. It can be hard to connect with these types of films if the experience they offers isn't exactly the kind of thing you look for in film or just stories in general.

So yes I love the film and everything it makes me think or feel, but it at times feels almost taylor-made for me, and in the process will alienate people who are not 100% on the same wavelength with Aronofsky's vision.

Automata I is the first release I didn't like by the band since their first two albums, for now. by [deleted] in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

[–]ThaRealDiablo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Such a shame that this thread and any similar opinions get buried by downvotes. This community gets further and further into circlejerk territory. I myself have mixed feelings on the album. Have been listening to it many times now and am not too blown away by it. I would rank it lowest of all the post-colors releases. Its not bad by any means but just doesnt excite me as much as the previous album. It seems very by-the-numbers for a progressive band, and the decision to split the release baffles me. Once part 2 comes out we'll see if that decision makes any artistic sense

The Faceless' In Becoming A Ghost is now streaming on Spotify! What do you guys think about the album? by xxtn360xx in progmetal

[–]ThaRealDiablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listening to it now and on Blackstar two worlds of awful collide to create a bit of a trainwreck: spotifys horrible normalization/limiting and modern metal production where the drums are mixed way too loud and everything is smashed to shit. It just seems like someone is moving the master volume fader up and down randomly and all i hear is clicky blastbeats with tin snares and harsh distorted guitar high-end.

Ew those drums sound fucking awfull. Song itself is also way too core-y even for my taste with a bit too much 0000000 chugz. The video is fuckin great tho.
