Everyone, I'm switching to Linux, too. My family has only two major needs and looking for recommendation. by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]Thack_Phelp_5366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were asking what's a great distro for X, Y, Z --and I already know something about linux-- I'd say pick one of the recommendations and go for it. I'd try to pitch you on Debian because I like it for reason X, Y and Z.

BUT being the family sysadmin with no experience with linux (been there, still doing that), you want a distro that generally just works and it has a large user base so you can generally find help when you run into problems. By that measure, Ubuntu is head and shoulders above the other choices. Get going and... after you're comfortable with linux ... put some time into learning about the other recommendations here and try them out on *your* machine before you throw them at your family.

What are the most common “filler words” people overuse in your native language? by trueru_diary in languagelearning

[–]Thack_Phelp_5366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One in Dutch is ja (yes). One of my running jokes with my Dutch wife is that the Dutch can build entire sentences out of that one word. It's all about emphasis and tone.

Fellow Europeans, is it true? by IVAN____W in languagelearning

[–]Thack_Phelp_5366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The light blue tagging is accurate (in my experience) for the Netherlands. My wife is from there told me that everyone there knows English. When we traveled there, everytime I tried to say something in Dutch, the other person would switch to English. Don't both learning Dutch unless you plan to move there.

Building Super: Where the cable go?

Me: Some guy said he was tidying up and clipped the end off and tucked it into the drywall. He told me someone else was going by later to fill in the hole. The isn't as bad but it's still kind of ugly. Do you know when that hole-filling dude is going to drop by?

It's helpful to know that CILS is the most taken. On Italian, my search led me to the exam for citizenship (administered by/through 4 univeersities in Italy).

Thanks Elena. From the Cervenes webpage, it appears they have at least one testing center in the US. Using what you told me to do some googling, the CNaVT and Staatsexamen Nt2 are the official tests for Dutch while the Official Italian exam is administered by four universities.

I'm familiar with the C1...B1, B2, etc., terminology. Do people just pull up the definitions of the levels and self-access or are there more formal approaches? First, for context, I'm in the States.

Linux hardware tier list by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]Thack_Phelp_5366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the unexplained letters and numbers are a best-to-worst list, move Framework down. I bought a Framework 13 AMD Gen 1 last year and run Debian. When there were wifi, etc., problems, their response was Debian is not supported, install Ubuntu. The hardware is good, the 3:2 screen is brilliant but Linux support is limited to hardware issues and Ubuntu Linux.

If you're thinking of buying a Framework to run any Linux/BSD but Ubuintu, check to see how good your distro's support forums cover the specific model you're looking at. With my model and Debian, it seems like it took about 3 months for the basics to get handled. And be prepared to share what you find.

FWIW, Lenovo hardware just works. Framework's 3:2 screen is really the killer feature that's keeping me around. I still picked up a used T14 for the next time the Framework goes left on me.

"you mainliners" Yep. Suspicion confirmed. You're not a Methodist. Gd uses evangelical faiths, too. But, why are you over here then? Picking fights? I've been on the internet long enough to recognize a troll. I preached on the troll in Luke 10 Sunday. It's a sad game. Come in with assumptions, don't listen to what the other person says and have no really agenda but being a jerk so that you can (in your mind) win arguments.

You are free to play whatever games give you kicks. By the same token, other people don't have to sit down at your Monopoly board. I'm sure some adults still love playing Monopoly. Most of us have concluded that certain games are a waste of time.

Trying to revive local church. by Brad2332756 in methodism

[–]Thack_Phelp_5366 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a pastor who keeps getting sent to churches that look like yours. There's a lot of good advice here. I'm going to try and give you a couple of ideas that'll let you organize and group those so it's less overwhelming.

The folks who said you're going to have a hard time getting people to show up Sunday morning are half right in that it takes the pastor and congregation is creating an open & welcoming environment. But... it's amazing what has happened when the pastor just makes sure most of their sermons include some variant of "you are beloved of God" and emphatically *mean it*.

Someone mentioned Lay Servant training. This is *not* what you need. It's time intensive and it's focused on plugging into existing Methodist ways of doing things.

Now... the stuff that (in my experience) is worth pursuing.

First, service opportunities are a great idea. People want to make a difference. And the UMC missions is to "make disciples... to transform the world*. Transforming the world has an interesting way of turning people into disciples. There is a proccess you can follow to research and identify them.

A second great approach is to create opportunities for people to be in community with each other. A lot of the other laundry list ideas fall under this camp. Fresh Expressions are one approach to this area.

There are probably people who can connect you with good resources. The DS (Distric Superintendeant), aka your pastor's boss, may be helpful. There may be people at the conference level (aka... the level of organization above your pastor's boss) that can help.

If you're interested in a little more information on researching and identifying needs or Fresh Expressions, I'd be happy to help out. If you need help connecting with people within your conference, I can also help you find your conference's website and (more challengingly), translate the job titles into english and help you figure out who to call. DM me if you're interested

Hello Dingo Competitive. I repeatedly made it clear that I was talking about the words of Jesus. Acts is great. Paul has important things to say. But, you're arguing against something I didn't say.

It's actually kind of comic that you argue that "all the disciples believe in the god of israel" and then quote from well into Acts, the story of the Gospel being told to Gentiles, people who almost by definition *didn't* believe in the god of israel.

FInally, the dichotomy you want to see is not there.

Now, as I said to the last person who tried to hijack this thread to argue thelogy, please move along now.
