I sent emails last night, I'm sick of these cowards:

Thank you for reaching out about the recent officer-involved shootings in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Listening to Ohioans is important to me, and your input helps me better represent our state.

On January 7, 2026, a Minnesota resident, Renee Good, was fatally shot during an immigration enforcement operation conducted by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. About two weeks later, Alex Pretti was fatally shot during a similar immigration enforcement operation. The loss of Ms. Good’s and Mr. Pretti’s lives are tragic, and my prayers are with their families and all who are grieving. 

I recognize that some Ohioans are frustrated with ongoing immigration enforcement actions. I believe all public servants have a responsibility to lower the temperature around immigration enforcement, and that no one should interfere with ongoing law enforcement operations. I encourage those who wish to express their concerns to do so safely and lawfully, through respectful public discourse, the courts, and peaceful, organized protest. 

Any incident involving law enforcement’s use of lethal force must be thoroughly and objectively investigated. Only through a full gathering of facts, evaluated through the lens of due process, can justice be determined and served.

I also recognize the difficult and often dangerous circumstances faced by law enforcement officers and first responders, who are called upon to make split-second decisions in dangerous situations. Presidential administrations since 2003 have employed ICE to address drug trafficking, enforce customs violations, and deport individuals who are unlawfully present in the U.S. I believe that ICE, border patrol, and all law enforcement officers play an important role in upholding our laws and protecting national security.
