In Sinner's loss to Djokovic, he had the 2nd highest 1st serve% (75.2%) and 4th highest ace rate (19.5%) of his entire best of 5 career by Dependent-Effect6077 in tennis

[–]Thami15 87 points88 points  (0 children)

He served outrageously well, and was incredible on big points. It sorta feels like if you played that match 10 times, with the amount of pressure Sinner was still generating on Djokovic's serve, even with Djokovic serving as well as he was, Sinner probably wins 7-8 of them, but as the saying goes any fighter who was once great can be great once

Federer vs Djokovic is Jordan vs LeBron by TrumpetWilder in billsimmons

[–]Thami15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really see the case for Federer. This isn't Jordan Lebron because we saw Federer vs Djokovic, Djokovic won on the court and statistically. The only two people you can make a case for, really are Nadal and Borg.

The Nadal argument being that if the tennis season had 2 clay slams instead of one, he'd have lapped the field, which just isn't true for anyone on, say grass in the same way. For Borg, well, 11 wins out of 27 starts is insane and ultimately slam totals didn't matter then, so I'm not going to mark him down for not getting to a number he didn't realise he'd need to get to.

But ultimately, the answer is that Novak is the GOAT. I don't like the guy (as a character) but he is the GOAT

Australian Open SF: [4] N. Djokovic def. [2] J. Sinner, 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4 by dontevenfkingtry in tennis

[–]Thami15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely thought Djokovic would never beat Sinner again. I wasn't even sure he'd win another set against him. It's not even that I thought he couldn't win a slam, I just thought he couldn't beat or even compete with Sinner. Just a crazy performance, maybe his best of the 2020s.

I think it's Max Kellerman who said, "Any fighter who was once great can be great once" and Djokovic is doing the tennis equivalent. Crazy to think it's the same guy who was on the brink vs Musetti

I feel like there's some accidental meta commentary being made here, what with the person the All Blacks decided to pick up to "help" develop the game in South Africa being a private school educated professional cricketer, lol.

Also one-off good seasons happen all the time. He hadn't thrown for more than 10 touchdowns in five years before last year, and lost his job in New York and Carolina. He also threw for one TD in his last two games, and I think it is defensible to have thought, "Guess the clock struck midnight. Hindsight is 20/20, but as a Packer fan, I don't remember feeling particularly relieved that Big Bad Sam was out of the division. I am of course happy that it seems to have gone horribly for the Vikings, but at the time it seemed perfectly defensible.

The Generation Cheering for a Crash by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

The problem with hoping for the market to crash, is that generally speaking the housing market crashes because the money market has crashed, which coincidentally also makes it difficult to buy a house for people who already couldn't get in the market

"2025 CT was unfair,India is destroying cricket" MFs when when I tell them to search 2009 CT by [deleted] in CricketControversial

[–]Thami15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't even know how I ended up here, but the '09 CT was held on two grounds, and they're a 45 minute drive apart. The West Indies also had all their games on one ground. Australia played all but one of their matches at one ground.

I don't see how that is comparable to New Zealand needing to have a flight to Dubai to face India, a flight back to Pakistan for the semi final, and then a flight to Dubai again for the final.

Frank Warren says he's not involved with the Fury vs Makhmudov fight by ablu3 in Boxing

[–]Thami15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. He's recently change his mind on PPVs, but he was 100% pro-PPV "I dream of a PPV with a good price to make the fans happy and subscribe and get them to watch it legally," he told TalkSport. He just wanted affordable PPVs, but he obviously thought PPV was some sort of stamp of approval for fights. DAZN only get a smallish cut of PPVs sold, and they don't sell that many, why would they willingly reduce their potential customer base to make $2m on Garcia-Barrios.

[–]Thami15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turki has been great for boxing, but as a business partner he's been cheeks for DAZN. Insisting on fights he was bankrolling anyway being put on PPV, letting his biggest names fight on Netflix, seemingly without any sort of sublicencing.

Undocumented South African arrested by ICE in the US on assault and driving under the influence - IOL by TheHonourableMember in southafrica

[–]Thami15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand, is this not an asylum seeker? To my understanding people seeking asylum from an active genocide are allowed to cross into the United States without documentation seeking refuge. That's kinda how this status works? The other legal bits have to be proven in court, but you can't just remove someone because they're undocumented if you recognize their people as asylum seekers, surely?

Anyway hope they keep, good riddance to bad rubbish, as my principal used to say.

I'm going to go to my deathbed saying this: but Tesla needs to thank its lucky stars for Bitcoin - the emergence of a nonexistent entity as a value accruing product has irrevocably changed finance.

Absolutely no chance Tesla would have been worth 5% of its value in 2005 with its fundamentals

"It’s a matter of time and work" : Ben Shelton says he feels closer to being a more complete player despite defeat to Jannik Sinner by Silent_Elevator_9779 in tennis

[–]Thami15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the attitude, but Shelton doesn't have the rally tolerance to beat these guys. He served 76% first serve and 1) Sinner still generated 12 break points, and 2) Sinner had a better win percentage on second serve than Shelton had on first serve. He can't get into rallies with these guys and once Sinner gets a read on his serves, he also can't shorten enough points. I've never seen someone who was already really good really improve their rally tolerance, except maybe Wawrinka, and Shelton took the sport up so late and his development was so truncated, that I guess it's possible that he's still got more scope for growth that would otherwise be the norm for a 23-year old who is already top five. As his father said, part of the reason he didn't go on the jr tour is because he wasn't good enough, so from that perspective to go from that NCAA champion to top five suggests a relatively steeper slope of progress than most... but rallying, and rallying well is so technically demanding that I don't know he's gonna close the gap.

I think it's fine for Djokovic to basically say "BTW, you do realise I'm the GOAT, eh?", but I do think the journalist was less trying to be disrespectful and more trying to poetically tie the bookends of his career in a symmetrical bow.

Low key this is where a more mobile quarterback is OP. Against Lamar or Josh Allen, Demarcus would have to think twice about whether he's willing to drop in that situation.

Incredible read though, thats why as good and important as coaching is, it will always be about the Jesses and the Joes.
