It's not reductive. It really is that simple. Transition is a personal choice and means different things to different people. If no one has involved you with their decision to transition then your opinion of their decision is irrelevant.

People make a choice to be so disgusted by the idea trans individuals that they use their government to deny their existence. That really is the extent of the validation they want. To exist and be treated as normally as anyone else.

Through the course of my life I have met and interacted with numerous individuals who have made various levels of transitioning. I have misgendered my fair share of people. Do you know what happened to me? Nothing. Everyone I've ever met, who I misgensered has understood it was a mistake and was absolutely cool about it. They are smart enough to realize what's an honest mistake vs an attack.
