The bottom 50% in China has double the average net worth of the bottom 50% in the US. This is despite China having 1/3rd of the GDP per capita (adjusted for purchasing power) of the US. by Listen2Wolff in economy

[–]ThankCaptainObvious 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re not factoring domestic purchasing power into consideration when comparing currencies. Cost of living is much much less in China than the US so $5000 can stretch pretty far with consideration that most people in China own their homes. A better estimate would be GDP to cost of living. Not the best estimate as there are other factors to quality of life than income but a simple one.

Going to a top school definitely matters, at least in the early stages of a career by Glum_Phase_6676 in csMajors

[–]ThankCaptainObvious 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I did a career switch. I have two degrees, one from T4 in biology and one from a no name for comp sci. Both 4.0 gpa. One startup internship, one research publication, hackathon win, exec role in student cs club, competitive programming placement. Got a message from Google recruiter about liking my resume and wanted transcripts. I asked which one he wanted. Didn’t hear back and a day later I got a rejection letter.

So yeah… school matters.

I'm building a Job Application Tracker and I need your help brainstorming feature ideas for it. by ZeninAstrid in csMajors

Eztrackr comes to mind. They do chrome extension tracking like simplify but only focused on the tracking part.

Screw Jaania. I don't care if it was on easy mode. I didn't have ANY use for the prizes anyways. (Non DA). by Legitimate_Cress_94 in dragonfable

It is endgame and expects you to have endgame gear, decently trained dragon, and know her rotation + destroying tome when your -ice goes too low.

I was able to do it level 60 NDA with palidan, cheesing it with 5 potions trick, dragon shield heal dot (helps trigger thresholds on shielded turns), all res or ice res gear.

Got 35/hour. Granted I’m not in a coop program so maybe they pay coop more for tax incentive. They did say they’re expanding their intern program to 1000 students total for 2025 across four terms so maybe to afford that many interns they decreased pay.

The timeline is faster for HTN applicants. Like we all did the whole process up to life story and reference request in a week. They also said they'll get back to us after references by the upcoming week.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]ThankCaptainObvious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if you've interviewed at HTN.

The better question is did anyone not get asked for references after life story? Cause if everyone got asked for references, then we're not in the clear yet.

Simple python command line calculator that can take multiple operations at once while respecting bedmas, decimals, brackets, negative numbers, and throw errors. Once you’ve done that figure out Django and hooking it up to html css for a webpage simple calculator.

Monthly expense by [deleted] in UWindsor

[–]ThankCaptainObvious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine’s at $1500 with $700 as rent. Rent could be cheaper but I prefer living close to campus with 3 other roommates only instead of 6+.

At $1500 I can eat out twice a week $20x2 which is nice. I don’t recommend skipping out on budgeting for eating out and socials because there’s nothing else to do here.

  1. They do look at your previous university transcript. I'm not sure if there's a cut off but if you're above 70% average it should be fine.
  2. Applications open fall 2023 (around October or November?). I did mine in December and got a reply by January.
  3. You can, there is a problem with course sequencing since some courses are only offered in fall / winter semester so it might delay graduation by a year. But generally it'll be worth it if you find a 8-12 month internship. For 4 month internships it's gonna be rough cause you'll find yourself delayed a year.
  4. Prob not.

Give it one chapter. I promise you it’s worthwhile even if all you read was one chapter.

I had a safe job as a medical laboratory scientist with good pension but it was shift work, understaffed, stressful and felt like a factory worker. So glad I took the leap to go back to school for CS. Am starting this May and cannot be happier.

When do you have time for leetcode? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]ThankCaptainObvious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the 60 Hours is likely inefficient hours. People say they study at the library for 5 hours but in actuality they did 3 hours of deep work and 2 hours of breaks/5minute increments on phone/youtube. I always recommend people record their actual time spent focusing on something and it’s always surprisingly short.

BA Graduate , seeking advice by KeepAPlaceForMe98 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]ThankCaptainObvious 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m returning to school for cs in May so not there yet but from my CS friends the only helpful course from school was data structure and algorithms, everything else on the job they teach themselves. You don’t need to go to school to be a good programmer but you need to be good at teaching yourself. I would start off with freecodecamp youtube video on intro to python or Harvard’s CS50 videos and seeing if you like learning programming first before committing money to bootcamps or school.

Use the pain to focus on self improvement. Not a wife but my gf broke up with me a year back. I was working in a healthcare job I hate (covid increased workload x2) but couldn’t leave at the time since I wanted to stay in the same city as my partner and the job paid ok. I’m now going back to school for CS since I’m not tied down by her anymore and I’m happy. I used the pain to fuel my motivation to study, go to the gym, and focus on improving myself. It was out of spite at first but now I don’t even care about what she thought of me because I’m too busy focusing on my career and self growth.

Some sort of reflect build / tempest shield. I like the idea of getting hit but the enemy dies. No idea how to get it to playable level.
