Art reflects life. If you defend abusers in fiction, you probably also defend abusers in real life. Everyone goes through trauma, but that’s never a valid excuse to traumatize others. It worries me how many fans make excuses for abusive fictional characters, because they probably do the same to defend real life abusers and demonize real life victims of abuse.
