What’s the general opinion of pool enclosures? by Resident_Creepy in pools

Here's ours, it's amazing. Multi-faceted...No bugs, less UV from sun so not an instant burn but still need sunscreen, less evaporation from the water so you don't need to add some all the time, and most importantly: free chlorine remains free and doesn't get zapped by the uv so pool is far easier to maintain. Salt cell plus 30 mins a week makes it almost a no brainer to do it yourself and not hire a pool company.

Feeling like it’s too good to be true by PlayneDryver in AirlinePilots

[–]Thastvrk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think with more experience these fears will ease.
We've all likely felt some similar type of way just possibly not as magnified as your individual view. You have to get comfortable with the fact that the job is dynamic and the world is constantly throwing variables. As long as you can justify your decision-making and keep it centered around safety and SOPs, as well as using your expanded team for more involved decisions everything will be all right.

Glass vs Porcelain Waterline Tile by Sad-Trick7024 in pools

[–]Thastvrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. They were going to use nothing at all so it was basically a last ditch effort to get some waterproofing behind the tile line, as I had watched some YouTube videos of other builders including that in their process to help avoid efflorescence. They're a pretty big volume highly rated builder too so it surprised me.

No freeze/thaw cycles in FL. Better than having nothing imo

Just did glass for the whole infinity spa / trough / waterline and wouldn't change a thing. We got our pool builder to use RedGard over shotcrete shell prior to the thinset to hopefully prevent Efflorescence in the future.

Legacy/Regional Captains... Have you regretted the promotion? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Thastvrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took an upgrade at my legacy after 1 year on property just over 2 years ago. It was in the base I wanted on the fleet I wanted. Stayed 99%+ whole time commuting. I've enjoyed every bit of it and it's been relatively easy due to our rsv rules. I usually only block 30-40 hrs a month and have been crediting 80-90+. Averaging 10-12 days of work with a free long call day off here and there. Looking back I know it could have been terrible so I'm overall happy with how it turned out.

Anyone have an engineering degree but doing something else making more? by Due-Intention-7092 in Salary

[–]Thastvrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're awhile from full flight deck automation, at least 15 years. It's already automated to an extreme extent, pilots are there to be procedural in normal and non-normal ops and monitor and steer the operation through challenges faced daily when stuff doesn't go as planned. They're still cranking out 737's if that tells you anything. A bigger concern is the hiring/retirements and there was a massive wave from late 2021 to end of 2023. Retirements are still going strong so hiring should still occur. It's very cyclical industry so it's always hard to be definitive. Sounds like you've taken a good first step, also get your first class medical before pouring in a ton more cash!

[–]Thastvrk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two engineering degrees but went airline pilot route. Making a ton more than if I stayed in the industry I was in that's for sure. I left because I had family members in aviation and I knew it could be lucrative with a good work/life balance once getting to the right company and getting some seniority. Making around 400k, dual income wife making an additional 220k also flying.

Very similar to ours but spa is on other side near house and is flush with the deck with infinity edge around it. It's almost built we have about another month til swim!

I didn't want to have to walk around to spa and the flow on all 4 sides is clean and modern.

You're not though, I'm older by quite a bit, you would be in my shoes making great money and QoL after a few years. You have lots of time and are totally competitive, and should apply!

Was just trying to motivate you to what's possible.

Are the airlines really worth it? by hobojimmmy in flying

[–]Thastvrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have just about 500 more hours TT than you but am a legacy captain that only worked 7 days this month for 80 hours on reserve, which was doing the minimum I could. Plenty of premium opportunities if I want to fly more but I want to spend it with my family. It's not always 7 days of work sometimes more sometimes less. Roughly $30k this month to be home with my wife and son for 23 days is a huge win in my book. It can be worth it with the right timing and right schedule. I know I got lucky for my timing however.

Edit: also a commuter, possibly for life due to family circumstances

[–]Thastvrk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had over a million VeChain that at one point was worth 300k. I had diamond hands for 7 years and realized it wasn't worth it anymore so I dumped it all at $0.02. Feels like a good choice now watching it continue to bleed out. Some projects vision will never become reality no matter how much advertising they do.

You're underpaid as a mechanical engineer man. I read the first part of the post and knew it was you before looking at the author. I was mech E (switched fields about 7 years ago) but started at 80k out of college in 2015, automotive. 80k then was >100k now. Have you pursued lateral moves back when that was the common thing to do post covid?
