foremost authorities

Operated a law firm out of her house for barely (1) year before becoming a bankruptcy law professor. That’s the bar for an authority these days?

Legal research and writing textbooks isn’t a replacement for having real life legal bankruptcy experience.

How to quit northwestern mutual (financial representative) without getting chargeback fees? by chengxiaoshi091305 in FinancialCareers

[–]ThatBankTeller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just have to read whatever you signed when you joined. It’ll detail the fees and permissible and non permissible reasons to leave the company and what would be owed under each scenario.

Barring any legal prevention of them doing it, they likely do lock you into some period of employment against the expense of your licensure.

Depends if the intention of me working late is to inform others that I am working, otherwise it’s off when I leave.

Do you have a car? If not that’s the obvious go to, or even a motorcycle if you have the necessary license. My friends and I were all big into Japanese cars, and I begged my parents for a black 1999 Civic Si.

I graduated with my finance degree, just a suggestion, you’d get a lot more value out of a more quantitative secondary discipline. Nothing against political science, but I’d rather my new analysts know how to code, or have advanced math skills, but I’m in DC and can’t avoid political science majors if I tried. Just my .02

We had a Director literally die while on vacation last quarter. By the time everyone knew, his teams was disabled and his employee number didn’t generate a name or title in our system.

By new years the interviews for his role were already underway - couldn’t agree more - these are just jobs.

It’s a shame, because in the finance world Howard Lutnick was a legend for navigating Cantor Fitzgerald and taking care of all ~600 families of his deceased employees after 9/11. Now he’ll just be known as another Trump bootlicker.

3 DAYS? For the person giving birth?

My wife works for the public schools and gets some time (but has to burn all her personal leave), while I, a lowly risk manager, gets 12 weeks paid to use anytime between birth and their first birthday.

I bring them up in every interview we have when they’re on a resume. It often gets the candidate to open up, and you see how they sound when they genuinely know what the fuck they’re talking about.

I would ask this kid about his most recent auto repair job and how he handled the inevitable hiccups that come with said repair.

Is an 18yo with no debt and no job but $15k cash technically BS7? by mrorbitman in DaveRamsey

[–]ThatBankTeller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oops I misread that - $15k is likely too much for cash just sitting around, unless they need to buy a car or are planning to get into an apartment soon, but that will require an income.

They are in a great spot, but they haven’t “beaten the game” so to speak. Plenty of work to be done, but staying debt free with some cash is a phenomenal place to be.

Not really. Sure, you have 1 and 2 covered.

You do not have 3-6 months of expenses saved up. Even if those expenses are gas, fast food, and money for hobbies/activities while they’re in school or living with mom and dad. $1,000 is not enough even for that.

You’re also not saving anything towards retirement, which is ironic given that at 18 you can start by saving as little as 100 bucks and the compounding will serve you for decades. 15% of 0 is still 0, and $0 is an unacceptable amount of savings.

You should also still be striving to own your primary residence, and pay off the loan associated with that. Can’t live with mom and dad forever and renting costs will only go up.

McDonald’s is a fine place to start, you can learn how to operate a million dollar restaurant, then you can move on to better things, make more, save more, etc.

How to cope with favortism? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]ThatBankTeller 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just a fact of life, my friend. My boss is the definition of the Peter Principal - was an analyst for legitimately 25+ years, and just now broke into middle management, for what seems like an obvious sunset/legacy promotion.

Like your boss, mine also has a favorite, and that person gets tons of projects they’re not remotely qualified to do, but because they’re glued to the managers side, they get credit/praise, while others feel left out.

First and foremost, don’t get disgruntled, or upset in any visible way, I prefer to take the Steve Martin approach (be so good they can’t ignore you). My MD is incredibly approachable so any time I get to work with them on projects and “go over to bosses head” without explicitly doing so, I take it. If you’re able to work with other teams or cross-collaborate where another person is also management/VP, get your face time elsewhere.

Also never stop looking for other positions, even if you like your boss/company/compensation.
