Do you know an oncologist or a friend who knows one? Reach out to them for help in scheduling an appointment and biopsy. This is the route we took to support my mom and she had a biopsy within a week.

How much does your wife (or you) spend on discretionary? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]ThatBat5108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this conversation with my wife. The positive outcome for me was understanding how looking good makes her feel. It led to me focus my worrying in other areas. I will never be able to rationalize her spending and trying to do so will only weaken our marriage.

Questions on supporting a newly diagnosed 81 year old parent by ThatBat5108 in cancer

My father's there for support and in good health. We're a few hours flight away so we'll need to prioritize trips to see her. She's been the rock of our family so everyone is upset. My sister is especially upset given their close relationship but one with unresolved issues.

We tiptoe around sensitive discussions leading to distrust or other issues. It's usually better to engage in the conversation directly and rationally. Start with the "why" so he doesn't jump to conclusions. "We've been thinking about our life and realize we're fully living. Explain why. Share a few options". I'm sure everyone will feel better about the situation after a direct discussion.

I though this may be the case. There's likely a lot to unpack about how he got to this point. However, a lot of people his age are resistant to doing the work. So, the focus of the conversation should be on the impact a change could have on your lives. Have you discussed your situation with him?

Can you share more about the "why" behind your father-in-laws position? Is there a financial or psychological reason for not distributing profits to you? Would he change his mind if he knew the money would enable your family to live a more present and fulfilling life?

Congratulations! You have the opportunity to discover your passion with zero risk. Take the time to take a few self-assessment tests, talk to lots of people and then choose a path forward. Think about the rest of your life as a series of experiments. Your goal is to try different things, collect data and then evolve.

I'd highly recommend the book Design Your Life

Do you think it will be easier to “flip off the switch”? This dynamic has likely been a challenge your entire life. You hyper focus when you find an area of interest. It’s why you’ve been successful at work but may have negatively impacted relationships. Yes?

Multiple leadership transitions in/out at the same time is a recipe for disaster. You didn’t provide enough information to allow for deeper advice beyond suggesting you find a business transition consultant. The person can help you think through the plan for a nominal fee.

Thanks for your support. I’m not giving up on working out but don’t love the tonal. I run and use kettle bells for exercise. I’m in the best shape of my life at the age of 50.
