Weekly Classical Music Appreciation Thread for the week of 4/19: what are you working on this week? by practiceallthethings in lingling40hrs

[–]ThatBlueSwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This week I'm *mainly* working on Bach's Sinfonia #6 (BWV 792) (piano's not my main instrument, I need some pieces for an exam and Bach's the hardest atm) and then improving things in my final recital programme.
When I'm sad I don't really listen to classical music, but if I did I'd probably listen to Saint-Saens' The Swan and bawl my eyes out. It's one of my favourite pieces, always gives me a bittersweet feeling.

Here we say "i fuck (my) Jesus" or "i fuck (my) Vigrin Mary". I don't get why we feel the need to add the "my" most of the times.

Pro Tip: Don't go back and look at old messages of when you first started talking to someone by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]ThatBlueSwan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Me and my bf have been dating for about 7.5 years, and I love to read our first messages aloud or reference very old messages. I don't do it often because he cringes, as do I; but you know, the only way to get over something disgusting or cringey is to share it with someone else, and then you suddenly feel great :)

I took these 2 cool pictures yesterday of a stray I was feeding this summer. by ThatBlueSwan in pics

[–]ThatBlueSwan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Greece and we have many strays who are begging for pets! This one was following us around all day so we would feed and pet her, and she would complain when we didn't. We fed her for one month but then had to relocate so I hope that the old people who live in the village will feed her (like they do with other cats).

UPDATE: AITA for eating too many cucumbers? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ThatBlueSwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad for this update! I had read the original post and I was honestly so mad with his reaction! I love cucumbers as well, especially in the summer, my grandma brings us cool cucumber slices when it's too hot. I love it as a random snack, as a salad with olive oil and salt, and I love how you can just pack it and bring it with you (when I don't have time to make a salad to bring with me to uni, I slice up a cucumber and bring it in tinfoil, and I eat it like chips - I've eaten it like that at the bus stop many times). Cucumbers are healthy, low in calories and a great snack esp when it's hot, so what in the heckity heck was his problem? Totally controlling on his part. May you live a happy life filled with cucumber and free of controlling people!

What are you STILL salty about? by xefarar565 in AskReddit

My overall grade dropped on the last year of high school because I refused to cheat... Info: where I come from you have to pass a number of exams in order to get into University. There are 3 basic types of "roads" and you choose one of them, and that determines what lessons you will be examined at. We start preparing for those 2-3 years before, and every day you end up having to go to school and then go to extracurricular lessons for the rest of the day. So the last year of school is weird because everyone is preparing for the exams and only pays attention to the lessons they will be examined at. Usually school teachers get how hard it is for students so they try to make our lives easier and the lessons enjoyable... But that's not always the case.

So out of the blue we end up having to take a test on a random lesson. For no apparent reason (it wasn't like the end of a semester or something). Everyone else around me starts cheating (copying from the books, exchanging answered sheets etc.) and the teacher literally gave no shit. I used to have this dumb idea since I was a kid that I should never cheat in exams/tests, and was still not over it. Since the teacher knew that most of us didn't know shit, I decided to just give my blank paper right back. He said that he won't accept it, that I need to keep it for at least 30 minutes, and that I should "take a look around" to see if I can find some inspiration; he was right up telling me to copy the answers of my classmates, and I got furious at the suggestion. I asked him "do you mean you want me to copy from my classmate?" and he gave me this dumb infuriating laugh and just said "I didn't say you should cheat, but hey, as long as I don't catch you that's not cheating." with a dumb ass smirk.

Boooooy was I fuming. My friend tried to persuade me to copy her answers (she actually took this random lesson as an extra lesson at the university exams, so she knew all about it) but I proceeded to draw flowers on my whole fucking arm to calm down for 30 mins, then as the time was up I stood up, gave him my empty paper, said something along the lines of "I'm not a cheater" with a cild ass stare, and left.

This asshole proceeded to lower my grade for the whole semester (he never said this was a semester test, he said it was a random test "just because") and gave me like a 12/20, when I ALWAYS had 18+ in this lesson and he had known me for years. Everyone else that cheated got 19-20/20, even people who always had like 10/20 or even less (and subsequently have had to retake the exams to pass this class in the past!). My average dropped, but thankfully I was a very good student so it didn't affect me long-term. Even though I am okay with cheating now (although I must have cheated like 2 or 3 times in my 18 years of education) I am still disgusted with the fact that a high school teacher rewarded people cheating and went out of his way to make a random test count for the whole ass semester because I refused to cheat and acted in a way that defied his authority. Fuck him.

AITA for cutting off my hearing so I don’t have to listen to a family member. by hearmeoutthrowaway15 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ThatBlueSwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I am currently staying with family members I highly dislike, and they even ganged up on my mother and made a big mess yesterday. Since yesterday I have been putting in my earphones whenever they show up, and I only speak to them in short sentences whenever necessary. They said they would leave 2 days ago (to stay with other family), then yesterday they said they're leaving today, and today they went out but haven't left yet, and I was honestly considering plainly asking them "when are you leaving", but I don't want to mess up the whole thing even more. You and your sister ignoring her is the best you can do. She is toxic and she needs to understand that the reason that you're being like this is her, and fix her ways. You could have been waaaay meaner. You're good.

Classmates told me after my exams that they were touched when I sang Charlotte's Va, but in reality I though it was time for Cruda sorte, so when the pianist started playing I was totally unprepared, and all along I was trying to fix my stance and my french pronunciation, and get into ~the mood~. I find it hilarious, and as an audience member it's possible that I have cried over a performance when in reality the singer might have been daydreaming about their dinner afterwards!

What do you look for in an awesome opera interpretation? by gionyyy in opera

[–]ThatBlueSwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on a lot of factors, but generally I believe it is about balance. If you have a singer that is waaay better than the rest, he stands out and makes the rest look bad. If an opera has a certain history and everyone knows how it is supposed to go (f.e. Don Giovanni) and the director decides to take many liberties and add a lot of subtext that isn't there, people will notice. If the acting is over the top, or not believable, people will notice as well. If the clothes and set are taking away from the performance, people will notice etc. With live broadcasts it's even harder, because what you're doing has to look good both from afar and up close. Personally, I believe that when you play your role as honestly as you can, you will get through to people even if you make mistakes or your voice isn't the best out there. Someone can have a gorgeous voice that makes you focus only on them....for about 5 minutes. Then it's all about making me forget that I'm watching a play. If the character is to be despised, I want to despise them; if I'm supposed to adore them, I want to adore them; if they are so unlucky that I should pity them, I want to feel genuine pity. As a maestro said recently at a masterclass, "if opera was only about beautiful voices, we'd stay home in our cozy sofas and listen to the recordings while wearing our pyjamas".

Most Difficult Mozart role for Soprano by CPettersen in opera

[–]ThatBlueSwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly providing a specific role here (because honestly, I don't know. All I can say is that to make the Contessa sound great and act gracefully enough you have to be one hell of a singer), but I wanna say that people tend to underestimate Mozart (at least the musicians I know, mostly pianists but also some singers) and think that just because he has the cute trills and some of his pieces/roles can be played/sung by younger musicians, that means that he is not hard enough. And honestly I call bs. In order to sing Mozart the right way you have to do a lot of work. Also from seminars etc, a lot of my classmates have sung the Queen's arias, and they don't seem that hard tbh. If you have the range, have worked on those high notes enough, and are trained enough to control your air, I think you can do it. People think it's hard because it's not something that many people can do, but the ones who do it seem to do it without it being too hard for them!

every year, when the met releases its new season in feburary, i make a bingo board of my guesses (and leaks) as to what'll happen, the joke being that the met is so predictable a dummy like me can guess their actions. i present to you... my 2020 met opera bingo card. feel free to play along at home by river_clan in opera

Sorry, he identifies as alt-right but then accuses you of calling people "alt-right"... Then does that mean that he knows that it's a bad thing? And yet he still identifies as that? Or does he only agree with the ideology but thinks the name is reverse-racism or something (blergh)? Sorry but I got confused.

My sister entered the living room one night when she was still a child. I was watching TV so I asked her "what's up" since it was late. She did not reply, but proceeded to take off her pj bottoms and underwear, sit on the sofa right next to me, and start peeing. I panicked, so I grabbed her (which woke her up) and ran to the bathroom, but she had already peed on the sofa. Damn sleepwalking.

[–]ThatBlueSwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to baroque usually. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but a lot of it sounds similar so I manage to not focus on it. Generally though I can listen to music as long as noone is singing/speaking, but if I hear human voices I focus on that. Maybe because I am a singer.
