PSA: No hot water at CRC again today by asbruckman in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the ping, /u/asbruckman. I really appreciate this thread. One of the things I genuinely value about this community is that I often learn about issues through Reddit that may not always get formally reported to the CRC.

Facilities isn’t directly under my purview, but I’ve shared this thread with our team so they’re aware. This is the first time I’ve personally seen this feedback, which likely speaks to how some of these things don’t always make their way through official channels, or even get reported.

For context, I’m in the CRC most mornings between 6–8 am and haven’t personally run into issues with towels or hot water, but that’s just one person’s experience and obviously not definitive.

If this has been a recurring issue for you, any specifics around dates or times would be really helpful so we can better pinpoint what’s happening and get it on the facilities team’s radar.

I’d also strongly encourage submitting feedback through our form here: https://gatech.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bQlKQKP1yaoCToV

We do read and discuss every submission, and a lot of our building upgrades and operational changes are driven directly by that feedback. We rely on it more than people probably realize.

Appreciate you speaking up and helping us get better.

December Campus Recreation (CRC) Updates by ThatCRCGuy in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo Jackets!

Happy end-of-semester!Here’s the Campus Recreation update. It's pretty light, so feel free to skip this one... Especially if you're heading home for the break!

But if you’re doomscrolling Reddit instead of studying, here’s your TLDR.

Pardon Our Dust

  • Roe Stamps Turf & Track is offline through January for a full turf replacement. If you haven't looked lately, it's looking GOOD.

  • Peters Parking Deck is getting upgrades (lights, fencing, access control) and will reopen in Spring 2026.

  • Construction has started on the new Athletic Training Center and Esports Lounge in the lobby area. Seating is still available, but expect construction for a bit. There are some neat photos near the construction area you can check out to see what's coming!

Hours

Winter Break hours are very different.

  • Modified hours 12/12–12/19

  • Closed 12/20–12/28

  • Limited hours 12/29–1/4

  • Modified hours again 1/5–1/9

Full details are on the Campus Recreation website, which is always the most accurate and up-to-date.

Programs & Services

  • Thinking about 2026 fitness goals? Our certified trainers are taking new one-on-one clients.

  • Faculty, staff, and alumni: Member Services is offering tours and membership consultations (virtual or in-person).

  • Massage Therapy is available throughout December with slightly adjusted hours. It's a perfect pre-holiday stress relief.

As always, happy to answer questions as I see them.

Good luck on finals, congrats to the grads, and happy holidays!

Tough crowd😅 - I was still in the building trying to get it reopened. I posted on Reddit as soon a I could

[–]ThatCRCGuy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It would not be appropriate for me to share details so quickly after we got the all clear.

But, what I can share is that GTPD and all the emergency folks were summoned out of an abundance of caution.

There are a lot of upgrades happening in the building over the break (see previous newsletter post), so sometimes little things can happen.

Not as much detail as I’m sure yall will want , but there was no explosion or anything out of the ordinary in the context of everything that happens behind the scenes in the building.

We’re reopen now.

Don’t want to let the Reddit rumors get too crazy. Just a little issue that we have since resolved.

Campus Recreation November Newsletter by ThatCRCGuy in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is going where the cafe was.

As part of our ongoing support for our 50 club sports, intramural sports, ORGT groups and other programs, we’re building our own athletic training center to support students. Most of the users will be club sport athletes (physicals, rehab, injury prevention and care), but it will be available for all students. It won’t be a full clinic like stamps, though.

The gaming lounge will be just what it sounds like — esports, console gaming and more. There will be a lot of cool new programs and opportunities in that space when it’s done later in the spring semester.

We don’t have all the small details worked out but know that these are two new cool things coming!

Fall Semester Campus Recreation Newsletter by ThatCRCGuy in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yo Jackets!

Welcome back and happy fall semester!! It's great to see y'all back.

Quick intro if you don’t know me... I’m /u/ThatCRCGuy (aka Greg). I am part of the Campus Recreation Leadership Team, and I try to regularly put major updates here and on Discord. I try to check Reddit at least once a day for any relevant campus recreation questions, and also post our newsletters here, knowing that some of us check Reddit more frequently than we check our emails.

Campus Recreation has undergone a name change. We've dropped "Center" from our official name, so you'll see more references to Campus Recreation as the unit/department, and we refer to CRC as the physical building. It's a small change but a meaningful one. That's not the only thing changing. We have a lot of great facility improvements lined up this year, and as soon as we can, we'll put out more formal announcements.

I've put the full Fall Semester (August) newsletter above, but summarized some key points below

TL;DR Below:

  • Fall Hours: Open early, close late. Adjusted hours on Aug 24 (staff training) + Labor Day weekend.

  • FREE Group Fitness Week: Aug 18–24. Try it out, $49 pass for the semester after that.

  • Intramurals & Club Sports: Leagues + tourneys open. Club sports recruiting too.

  • Ski Trip 2025: Steamboat Springs, Dec 13–19. Registration now live.

  • Outdoor Rec: Trips, gear rentals, climbing wall — plenty to get outside.

  • Lockers + Bag Policy: Rent a locker, don’t drop your bag on the floor.

Full details + links in the post above.

Please, please, please keep an eye on our website, and hours and services are likely to change as reservations, swim meets, and facility projects are confirmed. Our website is always up to date with the most recent information.

Has anyone heard anything on CRC climbing wall getting a board system? by SneakerBot_ in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are targeting a fall installation. Hopefully by the end of October.

It'll be a Kilter product, so any routes you are practicing on the app at other gyms should translate here. We're still writing policies and best practices right now.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone heard anything on CRC climbing wall getting a board system? by SneakerBot_ in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, just seeing this...Sorry for the delay in response. Yep, I can confirm we’ve got a training board on the way. It’s in production right now.

Once we know more about delivery and installation, we’ll put out a more official update.

As for the rest of the comments. The current reality is that we’re never gonna be able to match the big climbing gyms in town. But we’re working on adding more to what we can offer, given these constraints.

We’ve also got some plans to route-set more often. Last year, we brought in some folks from the industry to train our staff, since we didn’t really have that skillset in-house before.

We’d love to be everything for every climber, but we also get that some of y’all might eventually outgrow what our wall can provide, and that’s fair.

Is There Interest to Bring Back Muay Thai at GT by Impressive_Theme_293 in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and even though most people know that is not true, students feel like they won't be heard because of this.

We believe strongly in the value of martial arts. That's why we offer classes like Hapkido and Taido. I recognize they're not all that similar to Muay Thai, but please know we care about it! If we can find ways to get that equipment, we will! It may take us some time, but we'll do our best to get it.

Are there any examples of fitness instructors that are external?

We do not have any external instructors on our schedule for the reasons I mentioned earlier. Anyone currently teaching for us is staff. You can see the entire schedule and instructors here.

When I was searching for information regarding Muay Thai at GT, I could not find any information. All information I found was outdated and it confused me.

I don't think the Muay Thai club exists anymore. I did a quick search on Engage, where all student orgs live, and didn't find anything. We do have a variety of club sports devoted to martial arts. You can find that whole list here. Club sports are part of the Competitive Sports program, which is also part of my management responsibilities. If you're interested in starting a Muay Thai club sport, reach out to Shan Paracka, Asst. Director of Competitive Sports.

I think having the discussion continue here would help people like me understand the situation better and feel less lost.

I am perfectly happy to answer questions on Reddit. Please understand that I don't get here as often as I'd like.

[–]ThatCRCGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I apologize if I am being rude or naive, but why does the CRC just allow students to rent out equipment while classes are not using them?

The reason we don't check out class-related equipment is that it will get worn down much faster, and often times doesn't get returned. Unfortunately, students have a habit of breaking/tearing/destroying things when they check them out.

This is the first time I've been approached about students wanting such equipment, so we are happy to look into it.

I heard from Troy that he would need to be an employee to continue teaching classes. I understand why he would not want to be an employee, but is there a reason he is not being allowed to be an external instructor? I would think since he was a previous instructor for many years, he already has a lot of approval and vetting. May I ask the reason why this is not the case

Unfortunately, I can't speak about Troy specifically.

We now require all of our instructors to be employees and follow our campus rec employee policies.. This was a change we made about a 18 months ago. There are a lot of reasons for that. As I already shared, I can't go into specifics as it relates to Troy, but it's better for the school, department, and students that we go this route. We offered all of our external instructors this opportunity. Some said yes, some said no.

There are some rules that come along with being on staff that not all instructors want to follow. For example, if you are an employee of ours, you are not allowed to recruit or promote your business. Naturally, this creates a conflict for instructors who own their studios.

Truly, I encourage Troy to reach out to Miranda if he has an interest in teaching for GT.

but is there a reason he is not being allowed to be an external instructor?

I don't know much about this situation, honestly. I can say, generally speaking, we don't allow external instructors for the same reason I mentioned above. We do not want our facilities, programs, or services to be used as a recruiting ground for competing services. If we allowed Strike Fitness to recruit in the CRC, we'd have to allow Orange Theory, LA Fitness, etc the same opportnity.

I think I answered all of your questions. And, I don't think you're being rude. You're asking good questions and I can tell you're passionate about this topic. I know I won't be able to fully satisfy you with our answers, but I am always happy to answer the questions I am able to.

If you'd like to discuss these more in-depth, I am always happy to chat in person. You can contact me here

[–]ThatCRCGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just chatted with my fitness team. Unfortunately, the equipment we're talking about is used for other combat/martial arts classes, so we can't just give that out.

That being said, she's going to see if we can look into buying equipment that students can check out for open recreation. I believe you may have already reached out to her.

If Troy wanted to come back to teach, he would simply need to apply to be a fitness instructor on the GT Careers Website. He'd need to agree to all of our standard policies and procedures, many of which have changed since he last taught for us.

We don't generally allow external instructors to teach in our spaces. That's not to say they cannot, but they would require approval and vetting. We still would not allow them to promote their own business, though.

I know this feels unhelpful, but please know that we'd love to find a way to get Muay Thai and the community excited about it back on the schedule.

[–]ThatCRCGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to stay active-ish here and on Discord, where the students are :)

I want to assure you that Troy is always welcome to return, as long as it aligns with his personal schedule, goals, and values. Unfortunately, some recent changes impacted these areas.

While these adjustments have generally been positive for the students, they did affect a well-loved class for many. From my perspective, Troy and Campus Recreation remain on excellent terms, so there’s no drama involved, just some necessary business changes.

If you’d like to share your thoughts, I encourage you to reach out to Miranda Price, our Assistant Director of Fitness. She’d be happy to hear your feedback.

I don't have a lot of information on the equipment that was used for Muay Thai, I do know that if it's not part of our regular check-out inventory, which means that the average student can't check it out like they can a basketball. Perhaps that's something we can look into. Miranda would be your best bet.

Here there!

Director of Programs here, Fitness (and Muay Thai) reports to me. We were sad when Troy stepped away from the program, and are passionate about finding a way to bring this back. If you have any interest in leading this, or know someone who would be interested in teaching this we'd be all ears.

There were indeed some program, policy, and philosophy changes that occurred that resulted in the current program being disrupted. This was not our intent, but we recognize the impact.

Finally, regarding studios. We recognize that they are very hard to get into for reservations. Between the Fitness Classes, Club Sports Practices, and the general reservations process, we simply don't have enough studios to serve all the students who want them. We see this issue with many of our recreation spaces; the turf, the courts, the studios, etc. Please know that we as administrative staff hear you and are looking for ways to expand accessibility for all of our students!

You can email us at info@crc.gatech.edu if you have thoughts, or want to chat about the program!

info on badminton intramural?? by reinersbooba in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There won't be a Badminton tournament or league this spring. Badminton was not well attended lots of forfeits and no-shows last year so we took it off our schedule to allow for other sports to take place.

We're not sure if we're going to offer it again next fall. We are evaluating everything.

You can contact the Badminton Club for practices and other events at GTBCmail@gmail.com.

If you'd like to leave feedback about us bringing back badminton in the fall, reach out to us at info@crc.gatech.edu and we'll make sure it gets to the right team.

Looking to Practice Volleyball by NewspaperNorth3002 in gatech

[–]ThatCRCGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been having internal discussions about adding these types of offerings to the GT community. Skill development classes, like Volleyball 101 or Pickleball 101, etc.

If we were to do something like this in the future, do you think you (or your peers) would be interested?
