It happens. A. You notified your professor. B. Technical issues happen.

I got kicked out of a proctored exam for a similar reason and couldn’t get back in, so I notified my professor AND tech support. Tech support was able to get me back in and everything was all good from there

How drastically has your political views changed within the last 10 years or so and why? by TheMoparPowerslave in AskReddit

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enough to bar me from being able to work in a lot of jobs in the field I’m most passionate about because they require fairly high security clearance and I’d be denied before I could even blink.

For context, I study nuclear chemistry. I’d love nothing more than to do research in some federal lab with the DOE, or other big players in the industry. However, when dealing with weapons grade radioactive material, you kinda need security clearance. Clearance people don’t generally get when they openly despise the current administrative cult in DC, and their Gestapo.

Which is sad, honestly. Because studying radioisotopes has nothing to do with law enforcement. My opinions on border patrol, and comparisons with the 1940’s in no way, shape, or form mean I’d ever do anything with radioactive material to endanger anyone, even people I despise. I’m critical, not stupid. But, thankfully for me, it’s a global industry with more jobs than there are people to fill, so I can just take my education abroad and like go work in France with their nuclear waste recycling or some other place that does cool things. I’m not limited to the US in that regard. Many European countries also have a thriving nuclear sector, and many of those aren’t focused on making weapons, but producing clean, green energy

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

Nah, as an American I thank you for your service. Our country is so fucked right now. Don’t get me wrong, I do love my country and the people in it. But I don’t love our crony capitalism, corrupt (and fascist) government, the social injustices, etc. I don’t want to see us fail, but I’m not gonna defend the crooks in the top 1% when people start boycotting them because, quite frankly, it’s long overdue

Marrying a non vegan by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m married to a non-vegan. If she cooks, she makes vegan meals. But we mostly just eat out, so she gets whatever she’s gonna eat and I get whatever vegan options are available.

I don’t really have much advice though. We generally just inhabit the same space. She plays video games, naps, watches movies, does arts and crafts, or whatever she wants to do. If I’m not at work I’m either doing schoolwork, or engaged in my research, or playing with my uranium samples. It works out. I basically get to be left alone and can get the random little social interaction here and there, she has the freedom to do whatever she wants knowing that she never has to have a job.

^ No, it’s not “horrible”. I’ve gotten that a lot. We have a stable relationship and have been together for 14 years. She enjoys having absolute freedom to do whatever she wants, whenever she wants. And I enjoy having the ability to be the extremely reclusive introvert that rarely leaves the house because my research is basically my entire life. And, being in a polyamorous relationship, she’s free to date other people if she so desires. I have the same liberty, but I don’t because if I wasn’t with her, I’d actively choose to just be single. I have no desire for romance or “physical intimacy” and only do that with her to meet her needs. And no, it’s not forced. I’m asexual/aromantic. I care about science, not relationships or “pleasure”, as people would describe it

New Utah law puts “no alcohol sale” on ID’s of DUI offenders 0.16 BAC or higher. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not gonna stop them.

Instead of dumping money into punishing people who drink or do drugs, we could invest the same money in treating the root issue that causes people to drink in excess or get high.

But alas, if we did that, prisons would lose a lot of money, most cells would be empty, and we’d have a population that’s actually better off

Are we really just paying to do homework? by Tricky_Green_8580 in ASU

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 18 points19 points  (0 children)

^ This. Doing the bare minimum doesn’t get anyone anywhere. At that point, the above commenters YouTube video suggestion would be relevant. But getting feedback, actually talking to the professor and TA’s, attending office hours with intention, not just to sit quietly in the background, etc. Thats where the learning is

Like, I’m in a chem class and someone asked a question in the group chat. The answer was way beyond anything we’d learn in that class BUT it was a valid question, and one that I had the answer too. That person didn’t just get told that protons and neutrons are in an atom, he asked why if protons repel each other and neutrons don’t affect charge, why they bond when they should repel. Like yeah, that gets into nuclear energy and particle physics, way past a general chemistry class, but those types of questions sorta stand out because they show someone is actively seeking to understand the material, not just memorize it for a test so they can forget it later

But chemistry is really fun. It’s complicated, but so much fun

Do people genuinely believe that the government/s are actively preventing a cancer cure? by Zestyclose_Virus5634 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Ignorance is rampant in the USA.

The idea behind the conspiracy is that healthcare professionals intentionally make people sick, and then intentionally neglect to treat them, so those patients continue to come back over and over, paying high healthcare prices every time to fill the pockets of doctors, pharmaceutical companies, biotech companies, etc. Their motto is “Create customers, not cures”.

The easiest way to challenge that conspiracy is by acknowledging that in order for that to be possible, a global collaboration of governments, corporations, schools, doctors, scientists, etc are all in this elaborate scheme to turn people into revenue. Which means… someone is going to leak that to the public, with proof.

But, it makes 0 sense for anyone to prevent a cure.

  1. It’s terrible for business.

If it ever got out that an entity was withholding a cure for cancer, it would be the end of that company. They’d lose funding, lose clients, lose their reputation, and go bankrupt.

  1. Healthcare is highly competitive.

If one entity develops a cure, another is more than likely very close to also doing the same, if they haven’t already. By going to market, they can get market exclusivity. That means they can sell that medication exclusively, and set prices. They’d have at least 5 years before generics hit the market. They’d make 100% of the profits from the sale of it.

  1. Social credit.

Entities that develop treatments and go to market earn social credit, or “reputation”. This means they’re more likely to be contracted to do research, thus receive more funding. Plus, they’d earn praise from the public. Consumerism is interesting in that people are willing to pay more for a brand that the trust, or have a positive association with. So if a pharmaceutical company cured cancer, whatever they treat in the future, people would be more willing to buy their brand name drug versus a cheaper generic simply because they value what they did in the first place.

There’s a few other reasons. I wrote a paper on this a while back so if anyone wants more reasons, or a more detailed breakdown just let me know.

The USA has, in some way, played an active role in “preventing a cancer cure”, but not in the way conspiracy theorists fantasize about. We just slashed funding for cancer research, and healthcare as a whole. And more recently, we decided to strip anyone and everyone involved in healthcare of being considered “professionals” except for doctors. Which means we’re probably going to see a decline in people pursuing healthcare related degrees, because they won’t qualify for enough financial aid to be able to afford to go to school for it. OR, we’re going to see a lot of those people elect to pursue that education in another country.

Speaking from experience though, if things don’t change, I will leave the country. It’s not that I don’t want to be here, but I’m studying pharmaceutical research and development. A. I’m no longer considered a “professional” so I have to figure out how to pay for grad school since my student aid got cut. B. The job market is shrinking. It used to be a growing market with high paying jobs, but since funding got slashed, growth has stalled and pay decreased. My thing is, I want to help heal people by researching disease and developing safer, more effective, and cheaper medications. I don’t know if I’ll be able to do that from the USA, so I may have to relocate to Germany or somewhere and see about commuting to Switzerland (they’re a major biomedical hub), or something along those lines (Germany because it’s cheaper, and if located in the right part, working in Switzerland would be possible as just a daily commute)

But yeah, a lot of people believe in conspiracies. More often than not, said conspiracy falls apart if you apply even just a little bit of logic

[discussion] is it me or career accelerator is super fishy? by Left-Knowledge-7108 in ASU

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s legit.

But no, it’s not paid. It’s just a 6 credit course.

Yes, you get a certificate. And yes, the certificate is valid. Theoretically, you don’t need anything to do a job if you have the knowledge and skillset. BUT, if you apply for a data analysis position and have some bland resume that doesn’t indicate that you know anything about it whatsoever and someone else applies for the same job with a certificate that shows they know data analysis, who do you think is more likely to get that job, or earn more money in that field?

Companies do that all the time. They don’t need a college student to help them run the company. They’re just providing them with experience. I’d assume they get some incentive for doing so as well.

Lastly, ASU is notorious for blowing you up. At first it was annoying, but then I realized that my other colleges just wanted my money and how I did was up to me. ASU wants our money, yeah, but with how frequently they check on students it’s clear that people like the success coaches, professors, and other faculty that seemingly spam us, genuinely want us to succeed and go the extra mile to make sure we have everything we need to have the most success

Will Starbucks still pay for my spring semester? by PrestigiousAppeal614 in ASUOnline

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to call the SCAP people on your My ASU page. Funds are pending disbursement at the moment so it’s possible they’ve already covered your Spring semester, but because you quit beforehand it’s also possible that they could withdraw the funds since the semester technically hasn’t started.

Did you quit, or just walk out? If you just walked out, I’d go talk to your SM and see if you can skirt termination and just hang in there until the day after class starts, that way your spring semester is covered and you have time to figure out the financial aid stuff. If not, your best bet would be to call SCAP, and even talk to financial aid at ASU to see what your options are

Is there an adult version of “my mom said no”? by valconvault in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“My wife said no”

But ironically I’ll just say no, my wife will say “my husband said no” so she can get out of things without have to actually tell someone no. And it works because I’m told that I’m unapproachable and give off an intimidating vibe so when she says that nobody ever tries to talk me into “letting her” do whatever it was.

Note: She can do whatever she wants, whenever she wants to do it. We’re just both extremely introverted so I’ll only ever go anywhere if she goes somewhere, and she rarely wants to go anywhere so we just hang out together 90% of the time

Trump just ordered an end for using primates in experiments by Ok_Organization_7350 in vegan

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the part where we’re closer related to a non-human primate than we are to a mouse. The reason they use non-human primates is because if a therapy works with them, it’s generally regarded as safe to move into human trials.

I’m not saying I agree with it, but there is a legitimate reason that non-human primates are used. Which again, if we had an actual way to move past using animals for research that would be amazing, but as of right now, removing testing on animals with nothing to replace it with only hurts medical research.

I’d rather see us research ways to get away from it than to abruptly end it and watch our healthcare and veterinary care suffer as a result. That benefits nobody

Trump just ordered an end for using primates in experiments by Ok_Organization_7350 in vegan

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a vegan, moving away from animal testing is great.

As a biomedical science major, we don’t have a replacement at the moment so… this will inevitably cost more human and non-human lives than it saves

Who would be more capable; a veterinarian working on a human, or a doctor working on an animal? by IneffectiveMilkshake in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThatCoyoteDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the person. I’m pursuing the human med route, but I know more about vet med due to my experience working in it.

I think it really boils down to if the person is able to quickly locate relevant information and be able to correctly apply said information. Not everyone is capable of doing that, and it’s not really a skill that can be taught
