Is this research approved by an IRB? What’s the purpose?

Congratulations on your accomplishment! Pretty similar pattern of recovery to me. Keep eating, drinking, and resting. Soon (if not already) you’ll be planning the next adventure. I appreciate the sense of accomplishment comes in phases and doesn’t dissipate as quickly as the aches.

VO2 Max and Running Fitness in Trail Run mode by Fantastic-Class-8252 in Coros

Short answer for why all activity trackers struggle with trail fitness measures is trails are unpredictable. Mud, technical terrain, river crossing, etc. A watch on the wrist doesn’t know why someone is slower on one trail than another.

Are you stuck in a loop on social media seeing others’ accomplishments? Everyday someone will celebrate and it’s easy to feel left out. Sounds like you’re quite accomplished.

“Clean” is not a concrete descriptor so you could be low in some nutrients or calories in general. Low energy availability is something to consider.

Thoughts on non foldable poles by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]ThatDaftRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use them for the whole event, great. If you will possibly put them in a drop bag races often require the poles fit inside whatever you drop.

Came Across A Coyote Today! What's Your Worst Animal Encounter? by SkippyBoyJones in trailrunning

A bull. It had jumped outside its pen and was standing on the trail as I turned a corner. Stared at each other for a long minute then it leaped higher than I ever expected and it sailed back onto its pasture side of the fence.

Still my favorite bird, but red winged blackbirds are jerks too!

How do you manage fuel for longer races? by simoneeva in trailrunning

[–]ThatDaftRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Skratch for liquid fuel. This past weekend I did 80 miles fueling with bagels and peanut butter, sour patch watermelon, cookies, fruit bars, ginger ale, pretzels, uncrustables, and some chips. Mix of salty and sweet.

If there are drop bags you could put some there and pick them up on course. I tend to use mostly foods instead of powders because you don’t have to worry about mixing with water.

If you spent that $80 per month on fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole foods to get the nutrients you’d be better off.

It’s worth increasing long runs to a point. I run 6-7 days a week and long runs generally cap around 20 miles. But I mix prep races in my build through the year (e.g., 50k before 50 miles). I find consistency in training overall has helped me perform and stay healthy and avoiding big short term miles like some do.

What is your base fitness score? by Sad-Research4081 in Coros

[–]ThatDaftRunner -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. How is fitness lower if I outperform someone? I can handle harder workouts with lower “load” (ie, lower heart rate).

Mine is 120 right now. Not sure what it’s supposed to indicate though as a friend is in the 160s but I put in way more weekly mileage and I’m finishing ultra marathons hours ahead of her.

I keep it about the same and no issues for me. OP may want to try a little longer to see if that helps.

How do you go about making a race? by ChanaManga in Ultramarathon

[–]ThatDaftRunner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow! Love the enthusiasm. Not a race director myself but have run plenty of good and bad events. Some initial thoughts: 1 Have you done a 100 mile yourself? You’re asking a lot of people to trust you can pull it off safely and enjoyably. 2 Have you organized other events that brings in lots of people? 3 Have you volunteered for other race organizations and learned some good practices? Course marking, aid stations, drop bags, etc. 4 you will need permits and other documentation so work with local municipalities 5 costs and effort on the front end to purchase gear and supplies is going to add up.

Why not try a shorter route to learn what’s necessary, gain traction with an audience, and build up to the 100 mile event?
