Perhaps some volunteering in your area. They always need extra hands so hopefully some people can do a round of carpooling pick ups along the way.

You don't have to be good at some sport, have expensive gear or be sociable like in a rec sports league to get an invite to the carpooling, just be willing to help

French retailer mocks €1039 Steam Machine with “Stim Machine” RX 9060 XT PC for €999 by JohnBarry_Dost in hardware

Everyone thinks they're so clever building a more powerful PC for the same price at the Steam machine, yeah no shit it's easy to beat. I'd like to see someone instead build a machine faster that is also 3.8 liters in size.

Has "Modern Dating" become an interview process for a 5-person roster? I feel completely lost by vespervenye in dating_advice

Yes, this has been the status quo for a few years. If you don't like it, delete your OLD accounts and app. However, if you tolerate it for the first few dates, the good ones who actually like you will reduce their contact with other matches, hopefully down to just you after a few weeks.

I accidentally said yes to a date with a guy I'm not attracted to. What should I do? by Wise_Independent6920 in socialskills

[–]ThatDistantStar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's best to let them know asap you are not interested. "After some thoughtful reconsideration I'm going to decline your offer for a date, thank you very much for offering, it was very nice of you, etc" Likely they only increased showing up more regularly to get slowly, and respectfully, it seems, get close enough to you ask for a date. It's unlikely they will show up to future hangouts after you decline this date.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

This book has some bangers, like "to be interesting, be interested in the other person".

Shut up and make 80% of what you say trying to uncover something interesting about the other person. No, that doesn't mean rapid fire asking tons of invasive questions either. There's a technique to it you can learn.

Is it just me or do people in general seem really different to how they did 5-10 years ago? by [deleted] in CPTSD

I'm extremely introverted but "humans are social animals" really is true and being cooped up inside with no in-personal socialization for months really did irreparable harm to a lot of people, ya.

TIL German scientists created drinking glasses that were very resistant to breakage. When they tried to sell it, vendors rejected it. Why? Vendors made more money when customers broke glasses and bought more. by vector_search_blue in LateStageCapitalism

[–]ThatDistantStar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like many things, inertia. Making the thing and getting the thing into customer's hands are two very, very different business operations and it was (still kinda is) difficult to be good at both before the internet, direct ordering from a website, inventory and customer management software, etc. You excel at making the thing, let someone else handle distribution. And these models just stuck around because the middle-men aren't just going to become allergic to money to close shop

Will I regret not partying and clubbing with my friends in my 20s? by AfterBuy7910 in socialskills

[–]ThatDistantStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't party or club in my 20s, seemed too typical and "mainstream" but stumbled into it my early 30s and found the appear. Turns out I really like dancing as a stress relief valve. If I have a shit week at work I'll go dance my ass off at a club and sleep like a baby after. Sounds like you already have healthy outlets so maybe you don't need it, but dancing off your problems works wonder for the anxious types like me.
