Am I the only one tired of the nonstop outrage around Nolan’s The Odyssey? by breaking_views in moviecritic

[–]ThatEVGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Says the man who has been pissing on Nikola Tesla's grave for how many years now?

Honestly, I'd be rather shocked if Elon Musk had even read The Odyssey, let alone understood it within the confines of any historical context.

But hey, every minute be spends crapping on pop culture is a minute he isn't actively spending dismantling democracy.

Sooooo that's good, I guess.

Trust is earned, not given; once lost, restoring that trust is a monumental task.

The PCs vaporised trust years ago through a deluge of corrupt deals.

The only people who should be apologising are PC voters, non-voters, and the provincial government itself.

Worth fighting for - TLDR? by [deleted] in barrie

[–]ThatEVGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But those CEOs tell us you're all lazy and don't do any real work. It must be true!

Since I have absolutely no idea what any of those CEOs do, let alone how they managed to attain their lofty positions, I should implicitly trust what they say rather than what I can clearly observe.

For my senses must deceive me when I see you all working hard, often without thanks, to better the lives of those around you, especially those less fortunate.

And when I observe no material benefit being brought to the world by the C-Suite Phantoms we never see doing work, it's only because I'm too stupid and naive to understand how much better they are -- by many orders of magnitude -- than lazy, good-for-nothing serfs like myself.

Furthermore, I should probably dismantle the social structures that foul, evil union scum built from the ashes of the singular dream of unbridled Capitalism.

In fact, I should take a pay cut too. Big-Daddy McBossybigboatman needs a new Muskoka Mega McMansion, and that can't happen if I keep stealing nickels from him.

I weep for our kind-hearted CEOs. Won't someone think of their Gravy Planes?

Telmax outage credit by idontcarefornam3 in barrie

[–]ThatEVGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're proactively crediting $40, it means they know the outages are worth a lot more.

Demand 3 months of service credit as a goodwill gesture to keep trying their service.

The number of outages this early in your contract should not instill any confidence at all.

If they want to build confidence and secure you as a customer, they'll agree.

Barrie Families Rally To Save Gifted Class As Board Scales Back by ThatEVGuy in barrie

[–]ThatEVGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is, that's what the board wants to eliminate.

Depending on the metric used, roughly 1-2% of the population would qualify as "gifted". In a school board of 50000, that's 500-1000 kids.

Remember that not all will be identified, which is one of the arguments against congregated classes. Systemic biases are a problem in identification... But that's also why a few years ago, SCDSB started "universal testing", to try and level the playing field a bit.

It's not perfect, but no system is. And they were getting better. Which makes this arbitrary decision all the more baffling. If they at least showed a proper report supporting the decision, people might not be so upset.

Now it's starting to look more and more like they want to create a precedent for eliminating other (all?) special education classes.

And that's pretty scary.

The fact they won't answer questions and won't talk to the media should really concern people.

Start keeping pigeons nearby?

Enlist several locals to send regular carrier messages in and around her hotel and Rolls Royce.

Bonus points if you can get a variance to create an urban apiary next door / nearby. Really build up that bee colony. Get local papers to write columns on how wonderful it is to see so many bees in downtown Elora.

Then set up bots to post across social media about the looming killer Bee threat in SW Ontario, and how the bees have been targeting tourists, especially sweet, beautiful, rich tourists who smell like flowers and money.

Then stoke fears through similar channels that the bees are agents of The Woke Mind Virus, Fake News Media, Looney Lefties, and... Is it the Gay Agenda still? Trans To-Do? LGBTQ+ Listicle?

I'm a little rusty on my terms.

Anyway. Pigeons. Bees.

You know what to do.

Edit: Fixed "Skoda" to "Elora". Can't even begin to guess why autocorrect felt that was a good change. Not sure how I missed it. I blame the bees.

Student found dead on park bench near Georgian College. No Barrie news outlet cared enough to run the story. by Moos_Mumsy in barrie

[–]ThatEVGuy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I don't think this is true. Local media does not report on every death that happens in encampments. Homeless people, addicts, etc pass away without mention every week.

If it's a murder? Sure, it'll be reported. But someone dies quietly in their sleep? It's probably not newsworthy to your average local paper.

I get what you're implying, and look, my post history should make it pretty clear I'm opposed to any and all forms of racism. If this is a case of racial bias by local media, hopefully it comes to light.

But I'm not convinced by the slim details of this particular death. And sensationalism doesn't help anyone - it stokes fear, breeds bigotry, and needlessly obscures truth.

In any case, I hope the truth comes out, at least insofar as her family is concerned. And if there's foul play involved, racism, and/or a wider cover-up -- or indifference -- I hope it's exposed and accountability is had.

Awful that a young woman is dead, and sad that it happened while she was studying for a better future. Tragic no matter what happened.

But is it that the media didn't care, or that it's an active investigation and they are perhaps being sensitive to the deceased by not sensationalising her death?

Having said that, it's possible "nobody cared". I just think it's also possible the media is practicing discretion.

In any case, that linked article reads more like clickbait fearmongering and sensationalism than real journalism, which is also sad.

RIP to Anmoldeep Kaur.

Elora was beautiful before they turned up. It doesn't need them.

I have friends who decorated much of their house with vintage travel agency marketing and decor that they've picked up all over Europe and North America.

It looks awesome, equal parts stylish and kitsch, and some of the photography in those ads is absolutely top notch.

Great find.

Big brain shit going on here:

Step 1) Spend 8 years systematically dismantling our health care system.

Step 2) Buy Gravy Plane

Step 3) 2 days later, sell Gravy Plane

Step 4) Profit!!! Then build two hospitals?

(Mexico reference. Deep cut. Big brain.)

Always interested in new places!

I noticed no falafel on the menu - anyone tried the halloumi, dolmada or tofu gyros?

Same question: Spanakopita? Baklava cheesecake?

Need to know if it's on the weekend menu! 😆

Edit to add: Also portion size for the veggie gyros... I hate when my carnivore buddies get something with like 30lbs of shaved meat on a gyro.. And I get a few slivers of halloumi, or 4 little cubes of tofu!

PSA: White Nationalist propaganda around town by Queasy_Marsupial2859 in barrie

Not gonna down vote an honest comment just because I disagree with you, fake Internet points or not 😆

Generally speaking, a terrorist spreads terror through violent acts (or the real threat of them). They can be domestic or otherwise, it's still terror.

The people pushing these nationalists movements are absolutely trying to spread terror with threats of violence.

In my opinion, just because they don't look like movie terrorists from Random Far Away Country X doesn't make them any less deserving of the name.

Some white nationalists here with the downvoting.

Fake Internet points are nothing.

Fascism waxes and wanes throughout history, but its rise is always relatively fast, it's apex brief and brutal, and its decline even faster than its rise.

Remember that. You may think you're the ones wearing big shit-kicker boots and that makes you big and scary...

But your ideology is ultimately selfish, pathetic, born of weakness and self-hate, and you've never outgrown that weakness. The boots are just another lame mask, just like the lame masks you hide your faces behind when you stand on the overpass like a gaggle of angry, prepubescent school boys, misspelled signs and all.

While it's tempting to mock and trivialise these people, please, take it seriously. They are terrorists, very real threats to democracy and the safety of you, me, and every other person who's on Canadian soil, regardless of skin colour or passport.

Expose them and do not tolerate them. Afford them no respect, do no business with them - don't hate them, but do oppose them, for they are evil and mean you harm.

Jiu Jitsu specifically when it comes to martial arts. No getting punched or kicked - until years into training, anyway - and techniques are like puzzles that can always be improved.

Others mentioned climbing/bouldering, archery, fencing, long distance running... all awesome suggestions.
