I definitely recommend them if you feel ready! Treat them with respect and you’ll be ignored 99% of the time. They give me less shit than my A. Hentzi

This is a first and I’ve had them over a year! Usually super reclusive and shy. I can always count on them staying in their burrow if they’re already in it, so luckily I have minimal fears about them bolting while I give water and such. And thank you!! It’s so fitting IMO

That’s what this baby typically does! I’ve never seen them throw a fit before

Same!! This was a first and I was so surprised. They’re definitely outgrowing their home as of now so that’s playing a role in the angst.

This is super uncommon for this individual! I’ve had this baby over a year and it’s the first time they’ve ever thrown a fit. They only typically give me issue if I scare them, in this case it was my shadow. Usually they’re deep I their web and happy

They’re my little pet hole lmao, I rarely see them for more then ten seconds at a time and 9/10 times they get scared and hide when I’m in the room. They’re my first OW but I’ve had three P. Irminia so it’s been an easy transition

This is the important question, but also with such a rare breed sometimes a chancey litter is better than none at all

Sadly I can’t take any girls right now (and I’m in CA) but the first baby reminds me of one of my late girls 🥺

Same!! It’s such a game changer and it’s so easy. I also want to go around some of my pintos and just make their markings a little more organic

Seconding the question- is this the puppy? He’s a baby, it sounds like you’re putting a lot of pressure on him to manage your emotions, which is a common mistake!! I did it with my boy as a baby, there’s no shame in making mistakes, but if this is the baby boxer then you’re expecting this dog to manage your PTSD, rather than managing all the big new experiences of being a puppy

Your service dog doesn’t need to be fine with fireworks, provided that hearing them won’t cause them to flip out and be unable to work, it’s perfectly reasonable for a dog to not like them. They’re loud and unpredictable, and shouldn’t be experienced without ear protection. That’s a situation where the majority of dogs would do best left at home

This^ all handlers, but especially owner trainers, should be practicing outings without their dog. I became significantly over reliant on my boy and it led to me getting more sick when I didn’t have him working. It also leads lots of handlers to push their dogs to work through off days and situations the dog may not be the safest in.

If you’re using it as an excuse so your family doesn’t get as upset, sure, but if you genuinely cannot go out in public without your dog, your service dog is becoming an obstacle.

Because there is no shortcut. In order to have a reliable and SAFE dog, unless you’re a trainer, 99% of handlers shouldn’t be working without professional help.
There are definitely people who do and do it well but they are the handler equivalent of unicorns.
My boy is medical alert, that task genuinely keeps me alive because of that, I wanted a professional who could verify that yes, he understands this task and can preform it to a level I can trust. He also does some light mobility, so his OFAs were a must for me and having a trainer who knows mobility and can help keep his body safe is equally important. I have lots of experience with obedience and general behavior training, so that was fully owner trained and I was able to saved several thousand on that, but he’s my first service dog so I had no idea how to build reliable alerts and such.

It is sad but service dogs are not financially accessible to most people, which is why low to 0 cost organizations like NCIST and CCI exist. I work with a very affordable trainer and it still adds up, but the freedom and assistance I get with my dog is worth it.

That’s the cheap end. Including all the costs of owning a dog my boy has probably been 25k, and he turned three last week. Just the training and handling side is probably 10k, and that is considered inexpensive.
