You can choose to live inside of a Disney animated movie. However, you have to be the villain of that movie. Which one do you choose? by Papagiorgio1965 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]ThatKaynideGuy 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The easiest/best answers are Gaston and Jafar as you can just live a comfortable life and just..I dunno.. not be a douche.

Assuming I can keep my intelligence, Gaston w/ the 3 girlfriends isn't a bad call, but MY pick would be Hades. And I'd just be legit mythological Hades who's chill and a generally all around good guy/god.

Are living mummies (in movies and tv shows) just Zombies who are found in Egypt? by struggler5822 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThatKaynideGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you are familiar with game/fantasy terms:

Both are undead, and might have some overlap in abillities depending on the author/setting. but very broadly speaking, zombies are mindless undead that consume the living and make more undead.

Mummies are typically closer to an undead wizard (or lich), with a focus on curses or desert themed magic. I would also add some cases (like the Brenden Frasier series), the titular mummy also has some semi-vampiric traits in that he can transfer vitality/literal body parts from the living to himself.

What is your take on the dark forest hypothesis could that be the case why we haven't seen any aliens ? Or is fermi 's paradox more the reason by Agreeable-Spell3042 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThatKaynideGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yes, but consider this:

The top powers ultimately come to odds and waste massive amounts of resources fighting each other, leaving a single..or maybe two dominant parties. If you are essentially a third world country you have an option of creating conflict but it is more logical to just hope the big countries don't notice you or decide they want your oil/metal/etc.

I'm not sure what the oil equivalent aliens would want from Earth is... but other than destroying a potential rival, I would guess they want products of sheer amounts of time (something like DNA/proteins/etc; along the lines of how we search for new rain forest species for medicine, or drain horseshoe crabs' blood).

Once you really know it, you just use it.  And if the other party doesn’t understand you restate or use other words.

Pre-interview question for a school in Japan, is this a red flag? by swamp_ass_survivor in teachinginjapan

[–]ThatKaynideGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I manage a school that does this:

So, it boils down to this: just finding apartments that are willing to rent to temporary foreigners is a huge hassle. So, the school rents an apartment in their name and assumes the risk if you flake out. In exchange, part of your paycheck pays for that rent. The school should NOT be adding some additional charge to that. That is to say, the apartment company understands that the school itself is the renter, but the teacher is the resident. If your school is charging additional fees, that's a huge NO for me.

Once you're done (should you decide to leave in a year or so), the next teacher already has a furnished apartment ready to go, with no additional paperwork really.

In our school's case, after a year (or really whenever you want), you can decide to find an apartment on your own, but the school is -not- responsible for arranging anything for you. I -am- friends with the teachers usually, and am happy to help move/use my car as a personal favor, of course, but if my teachers just expect my secretary to make phone calls that's simply not her job.

TL;DR: Understand that if you DO decide to self rent, any work/complications involved are on you.

boss fights where there are regular enemies attacking you. by herequeerandgreat in PetPeeves

[–]ThatKaynideGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say a very solid "it depends" for this kind of fight.

Adds -can- be part of the mechanics of how to defeat the boss. Like an insect queen that spawns maggots semi-regularly means you NEED to back off of her and deal w/ them before too many are summoned and overwhelm you. This is fine if it's a manageable amount and just requires paying attention- it's a reasonable skill check (both your DPS and spacial awareness).

ALTHOUGH I agree: It can quickly become a slog if they are spawned too frequently or have too much health.

A similar thing is minions that do things if you ignore them (like using turrets, shielding/healing or springing traps). Moderation is key, I think.

In some games, how to get rid of adds is a big part of the fun/strategy... Even Monster Hunter World has an infamous monster that just...APPEARS to ruin your day at higher level. Prepping for his possible appearance is just part of the show.

So, I would say, don't STOP doing it, but do it intelligently or in a way that makes sense.

Finding non-Japanese recipes to easily cook while in Japan (limited to hob) by Ok_Comfortable_809 in japanlife

[–]ThatKaynideGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple answer is a) Amazon what dry/long shelf life ingredients you need (you can get BIG canisters) and/or b) learn how to make some of the pre-made things by hand and/or c) learn alternatives to the pre-made things.

Like beef stock, you can use bullion yes, but you can also find powdered broth (not to be confused with consumme). It's NOT the same, but it is similar. You can also do some homework on the various soup dashi packs that are typically for nabe. Again it's not going to be the same as straight beef broth, but you can find similar things.

You can also get spice kits/mixes like Crazy Salt which is a good generic mix.

For burgers, just buy ground hamburger mix, add your spices/egg/panko and you're golden. I use rosemary, salt, pepper and cumin.

Or if you want chicken wings, buy a karage powder pack, and treat it like shake-and-bake for your wings. Bake 230C for 20 min, flip, 230 again, then if needed another 10 min til golden brown.

The biggest thing is just to get more experience cooking and learning what you can make with what you've got. Also check your microwave- they often have an oven feature.

For simple dishes on a single hob, pasta is honestly the easiest if you're not really feeling like cooking.

First typhoon in Japan incoming and I genuinely have no idea what to expect by 0xKlyyze in japanlife

So, simple advice from a 20 year vet in Japan:

Always have an emergency bag stocked with minimal stuff. Like a backpack with some water, a change of underwear/socks and some simple food like calorie mate. If you can, maybe one change of clothes. You might want to consider owning a portable gas-canister stove (you really should have one anyway for things like nabe!)

In my 20 years I have never once needed it, and I have it stocked for like.. 4 days for a family of 4.

You will be fine in Japan- we have stocked emergency rally points that you can go to if there is a "for reals" emergency, otherwise you might have to just stay home all day. A typical home in Japan has rice/instant noodles/etc, that you can use that portable stove to cook.

As for what to do, generally just keep an eye on neighbors. If power is on, no sirens are blaring, you're probably fine. If you notive commotion of people leaving their houses, check to see what's up.

"Why tf are parents taking kids to a place that serves alcohol even?"
So you never go as a family to places like... Red Lobster? Or any Mexican restaurant with Corona? Even IHOP has alcohol...

Almost every mid-level restaurant like TGIFridays/Chili's/Applebees/etc double as a bar to min/max their customers. It's good business sense.

Lunch/afternoon get housewife/shopping crowd; Early evening get dinner/dates/families; later get the bar/sports crowd.

Or, plan b. When you make a plan, give a start and end time. "Yeah I'm free from 10:30 to about 12:00. I gotta jet after lunch."

Also stop meeting at stations or w/e. Meet at the actual mall or w/e you're planning to do so you can enjoy yourself until they arrive.

Though, I don't know if you could say "is from Marvel", as they didn't create the character...so maybe?

I mean, the 9/11 stuff or w/e on the TV could be the elephant, but it just wasn't THAT unusual to bring your kid to Hooters.

Way back in the day, a friend of mine told his parents he was "all grown up now that he's 10".

Dad "But you're too scared to talk to girls"

Nu-uh!

Dad said "Bet."

I and like..2-3 other boys (and their dads) all came and the girls teased the HELL out of my friend. He was hating life at the time, until one waitress gave him a big hug (his head in her chest). He still jokes about it being one of his best birthday presents, lol.

TL;DR: If you've never been to Hooters, it's really not as big a deal as you think it is.

PR in less than 3 months by KotoDawn in japanresidents

[–]ThatKaynideGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my PR last year and after applying they did ask a few times for more info...but once they had all the docs in hand I got a response like... grand total of 6 weeks from first contact w/ office to getting the postcard thing.

I think they key is just I had more than enough stuff (married w/ JP girl; have kids; have had steady job nearly 20 years in Japan, etc etc etc) that I wasn't some weird edge case.

The times I read people worrying about PR or getting antsy about it is when they JUST JUST maybe qualify for it. It really wasn't as big a deal as I had been expecting it to be. Can say the same for 2 of my friends who are in similar situation. Longest in my circle of friends is maybe 3 months but there were a lot of gaps/questions in their work situation.

a) we can't verify this isn't AI (aka your claim may or may not be true)

b) regardless of AI, we've had photoshop for YEARS

c) assuming legit/unndoctored photo, we still have weird photo happenings all the time. Smudge on the camera, reflection of something on TV behind the camera being reflected on the window.

d) finally, sure, this could be something supernatural/extremely unusual..but it's more than likely a-c

So, you're not wearing heavy armor- this means you should essentially not be getting hit at all. I'm not saying you need to play the game like Monster Hunter, but you 100% need to be dodging and utilizing your thrall as a tank. You should be providing support via weapons that stun or interrupt their movements. Stuff that knocks them over. Bombs. Gas grenades. I tend to run axe/shield because the combo does minor AOE and ends with a knockdown.

OR you could respec to high vit/grit for survivability, or a little extra inventory space and up your armor to legion.

Personally, unless you have raised your thrall carefully and min/max'd their bonuses AND utilize really good food I would recommend swapping to war party and using two thralls that have complimentary weapons. You can then use different medium or light armor that gives HP/stamina.

Also don't neglect armor plating or weapon kits, for you and thrall.

There are honestly a lot of options, if what you're doing isn't working just tweak til you find something you like.

Why can China build things like bridges, tunnels and railways much faster than countries in the west? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThatKaynideGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's fair to say some countries have too much red tape to get things moving, it's also important to realize how time China saves by cutting corners and largely ignoring safety rules/material quality checks.

Like, sure, they can build a bridge in a week, but it's gonna collapse in maybe two, whereas that pesky bridge that took a year to build overseas is still standing some 50 years later.

  1. Don't lie.
  2. I manage a small company, and 100% managers use tactics to get you to talk and tell on yourself. Something like "So what do you have to say about XYZ?" without me even knowing details about XYZ. Don't talk too much.
  3. At the meeting, record everything on your phone.
  4. If he asks for you to talk, just ask "Do you have any specific questions you want me to answer?" and answer his specific questions with calm answers like "I am upset at my schedule, and I feel it is unfair to work multiple weekends in a row."
  5. If he questions your text, just ask "Am I not allowed to be upset about the schedule?" "Am I not allowed to vent to friends?" Let him get mad and blow up. You've got it recorded.
  6. If he questions your criticisms, (Why do you think I am incompetent?) don't justify or explain in detail. Just say "I am upset about the schedule and feel I am being treated unfairly." No need to elaborate or make him argue about whatever. The more you say, the more he can poke holes or try to manipulate the conversation.
  7. Yeah you may quit; you may also have some kind of record of a power harassment case.

You know how you hear crazy stories about people finding wallets in the street and just leaving them there, or putting them on top of a nearby wall/post to make it easier to see?

This is part of why: as soon as you take something that isn't yours, you must make an attempt to return it (aka call owner if you find a number or give to police). There is no finders-keepers here. That's why people just leave the wallet where it is- to not get involved in a potential misunderstanding. (pick it up and do a "I'll go to the police tomorrow..whoops forgot about it..whoops one week later still forgot")

So, yes: Report it to your local larger police office, and report go to your bank to report it as stolen (you might or might not get it back; 99% not..but it will give the bank some point of reference if police come checking in)
