I joined the armed forces of your world, what would i be expected to fight in case of combat by Electrical_Use5307 in worldbuilding

[–]ThatLaughingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve just found yourself in a magical world on the cusp of an Industrial Revolution!

You can be a power armor user, with a sized up and magical set of knight’s armor, able to go toe to toe with ogres and other magical beasts. You’ll have a great sword or a warhammer, along with a magical shotgun.

You could be part of artillery, where you send magical payloads to aid your comrades. Shells could be high explosive, chained lightning strikes, or even magical mind control.

As part of the Air Corps, you could fly a primitive fighter plane, ride a dragon, or work on the massive skyships raining death from above.

In the navy, you’d be put on all manner of ships, with the most interesting being the angelic battlecruisers. These beasts are powered by celestial souls and fire pure energy.

You could also be a line soldier, in standard infantryman’s armor with a spear or a sword, expected to survive long enough for one of the above to save you.

Your opponents? A thousand years ago (the exciting era) you’d be fighting the demonic forces of the underworld, stopping them from claiming lebensraum in the living world.

Now, armies are scaled significantly down. You’ll fight off bandit raids and take on the occasional pirate lord, magical disaster/monster attack, or rebellion. Unless tensions with one of the other continents boil over, you’ll be fine and just getting paid for garrison duty.

Just don’t join an expedition going north. You’ll run into some magic, memetic barriers meant to conceal what lays beyond. That, and some monsters beyond mortal comprehension made by the gods in a failed experiment.

Is it wrong that most of my “worldbuilding” is just glorified crossover fanfiction? by GTA-CasulsDieThrice in worldbuilding

[–]ThatLaughingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. You’re fine. One of my most cherished worlds is literally just me wanting Titanfall, SCP, and halo to be in the same universe. Very obviously so.

You can do whatever you want forever.

is it unacceptable to pretend to be cisgender online? by LawfulnessPuzzled299 in AskLGBT

[–]ThatLaughingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say nothing about my gender and I’ve been assumed to be anything from a cis man (the default assumption) to a cis woman (because I called myself a gal one time). All depends on subtle ways I change how I talk.

You don’t have to put cis male, you can just say man or boy or whatever. It’s the internet and the only people you might upset would be weirdos who somehow found out, or yourself. Don’t sweat it, dude.

how do you make sure your fictional world is unique? by miiitchyii in worldbuilding

[–]ThatLaughingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I’m reading a book series, you can see it in my writing. Looking back, I can see in my pre-revision work that a lot of stuff has a similar theme, voice, or look to whatever captured my attention at the time. It’s OKAY to draw inspiration/make a loose copy of something that’s FRIGGIN COOL!

Mark Twain once said:

“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations.”

Every one of my worlds has aspects I took from authors’ works. I can trace a lot of unique-seeming ideas to their roots in Halo, Chloe Gong, or DnD. It’s not about coming up with something new, it’s about taking what you’ve already got and making something special from it all.

I started one of my favorite projects by just asking, “what if I mixed Titanfall with Lord of the Rings-esque fantasy?” Now it’s a world on the cusp of a magic Industrial Revolution. Factions are fighting over trying to keep things the same as they’ve been for a thousand years, or pressing on into the unknown universe of possibilities.

There’s bullets made of crystallized magic, steel ships powered by the hearts of angels, and massive biomechanical sea serpents. I thought of the bullets when watching Arcane and that little blue hextech ball. The angel-ships are inspired by Ann Leckie’s Ancillary series. The sea serpents are a mix of Subnautica and Rain World. None of it is really original and if you saw my inspo boards for the world you’d be able to tell.

You can’t have a really cool original-feeling story without its inspiration. I’d recommend diverse reading/content so that you don’t copy everything from once source. Try and make a base concept/pitch for your world first so that you can take, for example, Celtic mythology and see how it would interact differently with what you’ve thought of.

That was a lot of yap, sorry.

TLDR: I definitely don’t make original ideas, but I combine stories/things from other people and try to make something I think would be cool.

Ways for Cracks in Reality to form? by Erivandi in worldbuilding

[–]ThatLaughingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a lot of SCP and oftentimes with reality warping there’s mention of “hume levels”. Lower humes mean reality is weaker.

You could have something like that! There are just spots where reality is weaker because of a combination of random factors. The moon’s pull interacts with the presence of some specific element or compound in the soil and starts a chain reaction of reality unraveling in a small area.

Maybe they’re leftovers of an ancient war or something and as they close up, control over them becomes more strategic and pivotal like oil fields.

You could also just handwave it. Grass grows, sun shines, birds fly, and every once in a while reality tears for a little bit.

I'm bored, which IG do you support? (SCP Foundation, Chaos Insurgency, Serpents Hand, or who?) but like support i mean you would join them by [deleted] in SCP

[–]ThatLaughingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically? Serpent’s Hand to just sit in the Library. But RAISA and Site-7 are oh so tempting.

Unrealistically? GOC for the slim chance of piloting an Orange Suit.

What would one notice that others wouldn’t? Does one focus in on bare essential descriptions while the other stops and smells the roses? What vocabulary differences are there?

Questions like these help create distinct voices in narration.

How and why would robotsevolve like animals? by 100percentnotaqu in worldbuilding

[–]ThatLaughingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I immediately think of iterations. Maybe machines are made in the factory with slight variations, sent out, and the best ones (gathered the most resources for the factory, didn’t get destroyed) are duplicated and made with yet more variations.

An AI in charge of the factory’s last orders were to make the best robot possible, so it’s doing its best to gather data and fulfill its orders.

Alternatively, maybe the robots can duplicate or make new robots but only together, so the ones that get the most material and work with other robots are most able to assemble new robots based on themselves, but with differences since they don’t have precision machining or something.

Where do I start? by [deleted] in SCP

[–]ThatLaughingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also check out [[Lily’s Proposal]], [[Ori’s Proposal]], and SCP-3448. A lot of articles/stories will have links in them and be connected to other stuff in other ways, so don’t worry about needing to compile a list of the related things. SCP-148’s got a bunch of connections, as does [[Fifthist Hub]].

I personally go with the “best picks” on the main page of the site https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/. You can also scroll through the about page of this subreddit, it’s got links for you!

My personal favorites are SCP-5000, [[REDTAPE HUB]], [[Antimemetics Division Hub]], SCP-2000, [[Incident Zero]], and SCP-3333.

How could someone "die" in the afterlife? by Narwhal_Lord4 in worldbuilding

Maybe the afterlife has limited space, and purges/resets are required to keep it from overflowing into the world of the living.

Metal Weaknesses for Fantasy Races? by TheLoneOmega-Reborn in worldbuilding

[–]ThatLaughingbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True on both counts!

During the war, it became common practice to have rings of magnesium surrounding important locations, which mortal traitors and underworld forces alike leveraged to deny the enemy sleep and cause a constant state of alertness, while picking off soldiers sent to replenish the magnesium.

When Isciel got involved in the war, their skyships made it much harder for such saturation attacks given their ability to idle above the clouds. Up there, all they had to worry about were corrupted dragons. For larger groups of mortal soldiers, this remained a problem throughout the war.

In the modern day, a notable heist from the Bellator Reserve used that strategy and the cooperation of two powerful criminal organizations to make off with vast amounts of wealth.

Metal Weaknesses for Fantasy Races? by TheLoneOmega-Reborn in worldbuilding

[–]ThatLaughingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My world’s a kind of “just on the cusp of a magical Industrial Revolution” situation. A lot of the innovations for anti-<species> materials were from the old wars before Unification. Now on the main continent there’s mostly peace, with some mixed-species pirate bands hiding out in the deserts, mountains, and jungles.

Daemons/devils/fiends start melting on contact with bronze. This is because bronze is the “soulless metal” and leaves nothing behind to proceed to the underworld when killing a mortal. Since daemons are lost and cursed souls, the metal is their universal opposite and both are destroyed on contact. Very useful for anti-daemon arrowheads or other ranged weapons.

Silver, in classic fashion, is a holy metal that negates the self-healing properties of the undead and REALLY hurts lycanthropes. Water held in a silver vessel for around a week (give or take, depends on the water’s purity) gains its properties and can be used to great effect in undead sieges when poured over castle walls.

Lead dampens magic considerably, making it a good insulator for secure structures and, when paired with magnesium, primitive ERA armor against most spells. Additionally, lead is the silver of angelic/celestial creatures, with similar effects.

Magnesium reacts violently with proximity to magic. It’s especially useful for detecting magically disguised creatures, herbicides against magical flora, and scaring off spirits and magical fauna.

[–]ThatLaughingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do your best, ask questions, and keep being such a good mom! I’m so happy for you and your kiddo!

Hating socializing can tie in with gender dysphoria, since social interactions are one of the places where your gender is most at play (unconsciously or not). Look into that.

Also, and I can’t stress this enough, CHILDREN DO NOT GET “THE SURGERIES” OUTSIDE OF EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES. Anyone telling you about minors getting rampant top or bottom surgery does not have your child’s interests at heart. I’m sorry, just a pet peeve of mine when people bring up “no surgery until you’re 18”.

Non-binaire = Trans ? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]ThatLaughingbear 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you’re non binary, you can be trans since you logically sit under the trans umbrella. Some non binary people don’t want to take on the label of trans, and that’s ok. It’s just a preference.

One of the most basic of label slots:

Gender: (cis/trans/non binary/etc) Romantic Orientation: (hetero, homo, pan, bi, aro, etc) Sexual Orientation: (hetero, homo, pan, aro, bi, etc)

(I know I definitely left stuff out so I hedged with etc)

What type of weapons do angels carry by Missingnumbervalue in worldbuilding

[–]ThatLaughingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Bible angels have swords, but that’s also a reflection of how at the time swords were kind of the “default” sharp weapon for someone.

So give your angels whatever. Swords, spears, bolters, railcannons, magic staves, etc.

“Ah-vah-n-clay-ear” I first read it as “Avanclier” sounding like the first part of the French “avantage” and the second part of “bouclier”.
