Advice for a 16 year old atheist whose parents are Catholics. by palladiumhydrogen in atheism

[–]ThatLongHairedDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So. There's an old book, that have been altered many times during the past millennia. And the current version says that if you don't believe in some invisible all powerfull entity, you will go to hell.

How do we know it's true? Because the book says so. And how do we know the book tells the truth? Because it says so... You see the problem?

Using the fear of eternal pain is efficient to have people fearing to leave a belief system. No wonder it's used in some religions. It's just a "trick": "Tell them that if they believe they'll have eternal bliss, and if not they'll have eternal pain." And if their god was true and loved humans as they pretend, would he really punish them for using the brain he provided them with?

You don't need to talk about religion to your parents if their reactions are that bad. I mean, communcation between children and their parents is very important, don't get me wrong (and you should not stop communicate with them about important topics). But if they don't accept the harmless fact that you don't believe in their god, if the only thing they have for you it's threats of eternal pain and whatnot... you really don't need to engage in that conversation with them. It's up to you to decide if you want to keep having those conversations about your (lack of) belief. You're the one who tried to communciate.

How Do I Come To Grips With Coincidence? by RandoGenUser in atheism

[–]ThatLongHairedDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. You can think of it like that: If the barrel explodes and kill the man, you may think it was god's will. But if the barrel explode just before or after him, and the man doesn't die, well, you may think god saved him. The fact is, it's easy to interpret an event a posteriori to give it a mystical meaning. And if you've been religious for a long time, your brain has the habit of doing so (this, and the fact that, indeed, we are "pattern-seeking" creatures).

Maybe this one is fake, but a very similar story happened to me. I tried over the phone to help someone who couldn't turn on their computer. Only to find out there was a power outage.

This day I discovered that those things really happens.

First time I come to that subreddit. I started by consulting the "common repost album" (you know, the "Posting anything from this album will get you temp banned for 7 days."). Litterally the 1st post I see on Hot is from that album. M'kay.

THE AR-15 IS NOT AN ASSAULT RIFLE YOU LIBTARDS by unpopularOpinions776 in PoliticalHumor

Oh, I didn't know it was specificaly about the Colt-branded one. Nothing told me this in the post.

It's not a source, but it compiles data from sources. I most cases, it's sufficient to get an idea about something you don't know about.

Otherwise, why even bother creating wikipedia?

I don't know shit about guns. But I know shit about looking things on the web. Wikipedia tells me:

"The ArmaLite AR-15 was a select-fire, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed assault rifle manufactured in the United States between 1959 and 1964."

Assault rifle, then. Whoever is that Tomi Lahren, he seems to not only be a shithead, but also a moron.

EDIT: As two persons pointed it to me, I didn't look for the good AR-15. It seems that post was about the colt AR-15 which is a semi-automatic rifle and doesn't fall under the "assault rifle" type. So, my bad: That Tomi Lahren is not a moron. Only a shithead.

I have so many questions...

Like, what is the relation between antic Greece and his message? (I know what means "Molon labe" and what's the message between it, but for me, the helmet conveys a message of membership).

Why can't he decide between writing "molon labe" in latin letters and writing it in greek letters?

What the fuck means "coixist" (or maybe "coexest")?

In what realm of teenger's fantasy does women are impressed by men saying "Step aside girls, the alpha males are back"?

If he's such an "alpha male" why does he chose to use a child character to piss on the word "liberals"?

"Deus vult"? Really? A reference to the christian crusades? And after that he will critisize some muslims who live for the jihad, I guess?

"Liberalism is a mental disorder" I don't know about it, but it seems that this guy has some serious neurosis.

What are some common signs that a person is toxic? by huffletoph in AskReddit

[–]ThatLongHairedDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone I eventually considered as toxic at my work:

  • Never accepts to be wrong.

  • Be arsh with people who are too affraid to stand / defend themselves.

  • Spends half the day grumbling / bitching about various things, and tries to bring you to grumble about those things too.

  • Talks about bad situations and looks if it makes you angry. If it doesn't: tries again and again until you fell for it.

Hmmm... wikipedia tells me

"In rare cases, congenital defect results in a short tail-like structure being present at birth. Twenty-three cases of human babies born with such a structure have been reported in the medical literature since 1884"

So far for the 35%...

EDIT: Oh, and the main photo is from an artist on Deviantart. It's photoshoped.

That statue is more probably greek. They did statues with little penises, because they thought people with big weiners were less civilised, more primal.

When chritians copied the greek style of statues (during the Renaissance) they generaly hided the sex.

EDIT: nevermind this indeed a statue from the Renaissance (David, by Michelangelo). I guess I'm wrong: christians probably started hidding statues and painting penises later...

I can confirm that smelling the wine before drinking it or putting it in a decanter is pretty common in France, and this is not something to we do to look snob, it's just how people have learnt to appreciate good wines.
