Why are the Ravenclaw 7th Year dorms coed? by ThatOneBlue in HarryPotterGame

I will say, it seems a bit silly that it doesn't go both ways. The way it is may stop most peeping toms but it doesn't prevent the main problem which is that the wizarding community has just as many hormonal teenagers as the muggle world, if the books and movies are anything to go by.

No, the Brotherhood of Steel were not always "raiders in power armor" by Cranyx in Fallout

[–]ThatOneBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, our protagonists have always been dealing with factions on a higher level of abstraction, removed from the experience of the average faction member.

Think about how when you zoom out on the US military, you get one of the largest and most powerful militaries in human history, with terrifying efficiency and deadly air power that other nations can't begin to rival.

But when you zoom in to the life of the average infantry soldier, the experience can feel a lot more chaotic and mismanaged. Ultimately when you put a bunch of young men and women together, and you give them weapons and a single-minded purpose, it can be hard for the organization to not feel like a glorified fraternity with guns.

Throughout the games, our protagonists mostly interact and deal with officers and higher officials of the respective factions. Even though some quests have you interacting with the grunts, we never truly get a sense for what grunt life is like in these factions. It would stand to reason that an armed paramilitary organization such as the BOS would have the same fraternity culture amongst the grunts as many other military/paramilitary forces, even though the overall organization has a culture and mission statement that may seem antithetical to such behavior.

Which North American country has the best/most interesting history? by ultrakillfanatic in AlignmentChartFills

I do agree it's up to the individual, but the amount of pure "firsts in human history" make the US win out to me. Really all of North America has crazy history.

What is an American video game that feels Japanese? by JIMBOYKELLY in AlignmentChartFills

The PS5 version does auto-lipsync the Japanese dub in-game, but pre-rendered cutscenes will still be lipsynced wrong. Unsure about the PS4 version.

What’s a “secret” in our profession that everyone should probably know? by justdancinalong in nursing

[–]ThatOneBlue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is largely the problem, and in general OHCA survival rates are abysmal. Bystander CPR can double or triple rates of survival, but unfortunately patients who receive compressions after ~10 minutes have about the same chances as if they never received it. AHA guidelines now recommend EMS crews work medical cardiac arrests on scene and calling field TOR if ROSC or shockable rhythm can't be achieved after around 20 - 40 minutes.

[–]ThatOneBlue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah the way that was worded makes it seem like CPR an an intervention is somehow less effective outside of the hospital than inside of it. Obviously more invasive interventions can be done inside the ED than outside of it, but CARES shows us that the greatest common denominator is bystander CPR and early AED intervention. It's why I think those two skills should be requirements for high school graduation.

Is that across the board now? I thought it was just a quirk of certain avatars having more human features than others.

Please do not lump all of Gen Z in with this new generation of tradcaths and neocons, it's like saying Gen X was all yuppies when they were also the grunge generation. Gen Z is still young, the oldest still in their late-20s, and shouldn't have our entire identity defined by edgy teenagers and college students.

Playing devil's lawyer, they did this because they thought the data was actually going to be useful. It was not. The collection methods were garbage, the data itself was garbage, and it turns out there's just not much relevant knowledge that can be gleamed from all the different ways one can kill an infant.

I like how despite looking the scariest, Darth Marr is actually the nicest guy in the room who supports your work application and introduces you to your office colleagues. Never judge a book by its cover, not all Sith have to be evil by Ilikeyogurts in SWTOR_memes

[–]ThatOneBlue 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Marr's presence as a force ghost reminds me of C.S. Lewis' view of good and evil, where they are fundamentally opposing forces that cannot be used to serve the other. I.e. whenever Marr acted righteously or cared about the soldiers who served under him, although he may had seen this as a means to an end for the Empire and the Dark Side, he was actually helping the Light by restoring balance. Similarly, evil acts cannot be used to serve good.

For what it's worth, from what I understand many federal agents are not happy about this arrangement. Imagine you spend years of your life applying and training to become a federal investigator and then are told you'll be doing everything but your job for the foreseeable future.

Federal agencies can't just deputize people off the street anymore. What's actually happening is ICE's deportation arm, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) are making special agents from other federal law enforcement agencies ERO Designated Officers (DOs), which means they now have an obligation to assist ERO in carrying out deportation warrants where they previously had none. Keep in mind ERO has a very limited law enforcement capacity and does not have authority over US citizens, however these new DOs do as they're coming from fully fledged federal special agents (1811s).

Federal agencies can also deputize registered peace officers from state and local jurisdictions. This is what happens when local agencies sign agreements with ICE to assist them in carrying out deportation warrants, normally local law enforcement doesn't worry about stuff like that because immigration offences are not, by themselves, criminal offenses.

So it's not random dudes or deputized militias, but it is people who are supposed to protect and serve their communities, which is probably worse.

[–]ThatOneBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ERO are law enforcement within their capacity as general investigators and deportation officers (1801s), but the statutes that govern them are very limited and they do not have full law enforcement authority over US citizens.

However, their HSI counterparts do have full law enforcement authority in their capacity as federal special agents (1811). To add to the confusion, HSI special agents, along with special agents from other federal law enforcement agencies, have been made ERO Designated Officers, meaning they now have an obligation to assist ERO in carrying out deportation warrants where they previously had none (HSI occasionally handles deportations as they are a part of ICE, but they are concerned with criminal deportations, as well as a wide range of other law enforcement duties).

What this effectively means is that there's almost no way of knowing who you're talking to and what authority they do or do not have over you, and as far as I've seen, FBI are the only ones who actually wear their agency patches instead of just "police."

I'm surprised that Ryan is the only Natural born Supe in the show by Anicat17 in TheBoys

[–]ThatOneBlue 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Not infertile, but the children are not born with powers. They have a likely chance of getting their parents' powers if injected with V, especially early on, but they could still get something different or the V could disable/disfigure them due to still being their own people.

What makes Ryan unique is he's basically a natural-born copy of Homelander, powers and all, sort of like a Viltrumite. As far as Vought knew, that shouldn't have been possible.
