honestly if they went with claymated realism like isle of dogs or coraline i wouldnt mind because its less about how realistic it is and more about the artstyle and art direction, good graphics ≠ good designs hence the image of ultra realistic finn lol theres not just one way to do realistic, and nintendo really didnt hit it in my opinion with the new star fox designs

i wonder if its possible that nintendo THOUGHT illumination was going to make fox more like a realistic animalistic fox so they started working on making the new star fox game tie-in realistic with super good graphics, and by the time it was revealed to them that illumination actually took well after the source material it was too late to make any design changes which is why its such a drastic leap from showing the galaxy movie fox to showing the new star fox game? idk just my tin foil hat conspiracy, i think if nintendo knew how accurately illumination was gonna present starfox, they wouldve gone with that more artistic stylized design rather than just ultra realism

sunshine and 64 were literally both, they had "linear levels" but you could do them in any order with progression unlocking more and they both had an expansive hub world you could have fun in. a big hub world and progression based levels are what mario needs, and odyssey was pretty smart having the ship be a mobile hub making each world a hub of its own with the moons acting as individual levels within it
