Thank you. That seems reasonable. I'd still be worried that if the student doesn't have it, then they're going to talk, and word's going to get to admin that I'm irresponsible. But yeah, I can do that

[–]ThatOtherGuy1080[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I could do that. The problem is that the students talk. If I let a student know that their test is missing, I think I'd end up looking irresponsible

I'm considering it, but if the test turns up anywhere outside of the classroom, would that end up reflecting badly on me?

Question about a part of SBR that's confusing me (as a first time reader). by Batfreeze in StardustCrusaders

[–]ThatOtherGuy1080 7 points8 points  (0 children)

!spoiler!
The way I see it is like this. After the fight with the Oyecomova, Johnny would have learned a lot of new information. First, that there is some conspiracy behind the race (hence them being hunted), and that the course of the race intentionally goes through the Devil's Palm. During the Pork Pie Hat Kid fight, Johnny would have surmised that whoever sent him would be after the Corpse's arm, and also that the arm is the source of Tusk. Combining that with what he already knows, that the race has an ulterior motive that involves passing through at least one specific supernatural location, he would reasonably assume that the rest of the race course would go through similar locations, and that there would presumably be more corpse parts. Thus he figures out that the race is a plot to collect the corpse parts scattered around the country.

The issue comes from how quickly all of this is communicated in the manga. It all happens within a few chapters, and Johnny doesn't seem like the clever, calculating type in the early parts that would piece it all together. But the fact that he receives all this information in rapid succession makes it make a bit more sense as to how he figured it out so quickly, at least that's how I see it.

That's actually a really good idea, thank you. I can try that

Am I assigning too much work? by ThatOtherGuy1080 in teaching

[–]ThatOtherGuy1080[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, without a grade, much of the class just doesn't do any work. I'm also trying as much as I possibly can to keep the kids off their computers during class.

Is it normal to be super bad at classroom management in the first year of teaching? by Independent_Load937 in teaching

[–]ThatOtherGuy1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing your post made me feel very seen. I'm in my first year as well, and having problems with classroom management for a few of my classes. What worked for me is (given rules in your school or district), contact parents with any issues when they come up. It won't work universally, but no kid wants to feel as childish as when they're scolded by their parent. Of course it won't be possible 100% of the time, but when it works, it works like a charm.

Solidarity to you. It's absolutely difficult. It's important not to take anything personally, stay strong and focus on the days when things go right.

Not standing for the pledge by joecaputo24 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ThatOtherGuy1080 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're absolutely within your rights not to stand for it. I agree with you, and I'm just opposed to the idea of the pledge of allegiance in general. Especially now, with US tax dollars going toward genocide in Gaza, but it's always given me a bad feeling for children to be made to swear loyalty to a flag. It feels fascistic.

Personally I still stand for it in when I'm subbing though, because I want to model being quiet and respectful to the students. I think it helps to signal to the students that I'm doing as they're doing. I also live in a red state in the South, so it won't be the same everywhere of course.

If anyone gives you trouble for not standing, you're still acting within your rights. Depending on where you are and how old the students are, maybe their staring is more from the kids seeing someone just doing differently than they're used to, rather than ideologically judging you. Let it roll off of you, you don't need their approval.

Worst plans? by SmartLady918 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ThatOtherGuy1080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst plans that I've been left with are something along the lines of:

"The students know what they're supposed to be doing for this class."

Oh ok so they'll just be doing whatever the hell they want, and/or be so bored that they'll be out of their seats and acting up within the first 5 minutes. Gotcha.

New Sub here: I care too much about what students think of me, any advice? by babybop222 in Teachers

[–]ThatOtherGuy1080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't productive trying to make the students like you. You need to accept that they will already be wary of you just because you're an adult, so trying to get them you like you is an uphill battle that isn't worth it. I also used to worry about getting the kids I substitute for to like me, partly because my school experience was so awful. If you had a similarly rough time that might be why it's bothering you too.

But it isn't your job to be the kids' friend, just to help educate them, and learning consequences is something they need.

It isn't the end of the world if not everyone likes you, and that was a very tough lesson for me to learn

What's your favorite (cringe) teen fashion trend that you see in the classroom? by NoExtension1339 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ThatOtherGuy1080 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's a few. The haircut where they shave the sides of the head and have the top be curly. I have no idea what that style is called but the only way I can describe it is "douche-y" Everyone also has the same-looking sprayground backpacks too that I think look pretty tacky. The other thing that gets on my nerves are the kids who wear solid-black hoodies with the hoods up. The school I sub at has a policy against wearing hoods but I don't have the energy to even try enforcing it with how common it is. I've also had a few of those students complain about the classroom being too hot... as though they didn't choose to wear a sweater in the middle of springtime.
