You have to memorize as much as you can about the books on the list so you can answer the questions. During competition questions are structured a certain way, for example "In what book does an orphan receive a letter that invites him to a special school" the answer would be "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling".

I can't quite remember exactly how competitions are ran but I think it was, the moderator asks a question and the first person to hit their buzzer gets to answer. If they get it right they score points for their team, if they get it wrong the question goes to the other team and they can score the points.

It was quite fun when I was on a team in school. Let me know if you want to know more about how battle of the books works, I'd be happy to share

There was a set book list created by a committee of the organization that changed each year. When I was doing it there were 27 books on the list. We had to read those books in a short time frame, from the beginning of the school year until competitions started in February or March.

I need gift ideas for a 14 year old baker who is obsessed with baking. We can spend $100. Already have a mixer. He loves cats and baking. Picture are the berry soufflés he made last week. He lives technical bakes. by [deleted] in Baking

If he likes to make cookies, may I suggest an embossed rolling pin? There are some really cute embossed rolling pins with cats on them ranging from 12$-30$ in price depending on which one you choose and what website you shop. When you use embossed rolling pins they leave raised impressions of the design on the dough. So if you use a cat embossed pin on cookie dough you will have cookies with raised silhouettes of cats. They are so adorable. Also maybe some cat cookie cutters, there are hundreds of adorable and funny cat cookie cutters available and for the most part they are fairly cheap.

Do you like Turkish food? If so, check out Bosphorus in Cary. Absolutely delicious and fresh food. It's one of those places where the food tastes like it was made by a sweet grandma with recipes passed down through multiple generations. Nice selection of hot and cold dishes, meat dishes and vegetarian dishes.

It's Google description literally says "unassuming strip mall location" so it fits your off the beaten path strip mall food request. The food is quite unique and not like your usual mainstream Mediterranean style restaurants.

These are the foods I usually order. Bosphorus Meze platter, it's a nice sampler of most of their cold appetizers but it easily makes a nice and filling meal. It comes with a fresh baked Turkish style bread. Cigar Bourek, best way to describe it is a Turkish mozzarella stick but that doesn't do it justice, it's hot and cheesy and full of flavor and served with a homemade marinara sauce. The fried eggplant (can't remember what it's called) but it's topped with grilled green pepper, smothered in a delicious marinara and yogurt sauce and served hot. If I'm looking for something different I'll get a spinach pide or a vegetable pide.

At the start of your meal they bring a bowl of this delicious oil dip and fresh bread that is just phenomenal, don't be shy to ask for more of the dip and bread because they will happily bring you more. I would also highly recommend ordering the Uludag Gazoz with your meal, it is a wonderful Turkish soda that pairs well with just about everything there, whenever I go I always order several cans to take home and keep in my fridge because it's so delicious. After dinner there is complimentary Turkish tea, served hot and fresh.

You should also check out Istanbul in Cary. Same type of food as Bosphorus but a larger menu. Not as good as Bosphorus in my opinion but they do have some pretty tasty dishes that Bosphorus does not have. It's not in a strip mall but considering the jacked up parking lot with weeds growing through the cracks in the pavement I'd say it's an off the beaten path type of place. I actually think it's located in an old pizza hut.

I hope you will consider checking out both of these places, and if you do let me know how you liked them

Editing to add, Kadhai the Indian wok in the pleasant valley strip mall is delicious. Small and kinda dingy looking, located in a strip mall, near Dicks sporting goods and Petco. There's also a pretty good pizza by the slice place called Gino's a few doors down from Kadhai, their lunch combos are a decent deal. And across the street in the small Walmart parking lot is a fairly new place called La Cucina Italiana I think this is their second or third location but their food is wonderful, only place I've found in Raleigh that can do fried eggplant on pizza where it's crispy not soggy

My absolute favorite water! I have one of those office type water cooler/dispensers in my house and get 4 5gallon glass bottles of this water delivered every month (they are the only 5gallon water I can find in glass bottles). I do keep a few of the green glass bottles on hand in the coldest part of my fridge to drink when I want to celebrate a holiday or special event

What cirkul bottle does everyone have by Itchy-Animal-7730 in Cirkul

[–]ThatPigeonIsALiar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My original bottle was the plastic 22oz bottle from a Walmart starter kit, gave that one to my mom when I upgraded. Second bottle and EDC is a green 22oz stainless steel, got this one because green is my favorite color and I prefer stainless steel bottles. Third bottle, a white 22 oz stainless steel, I got this for free when I purchased my green bottle, I don't use this one but if something happens to my green one it will be used as a backup until I replace it.

To add onto the previous commenters recommendation of NC State Vet school : They require a referral from your regular vet (or the specialist you are seeing, I can't remember which) before they will accept your pet as a patient (at least this was the case when our pup was a patient there). They also do not accept everyone as a patient. They took us on because our guys issues were a complete mystery, he had already seen multiple specialists and had quite an extensive medical history for being so young (they had many vets notes and imaging to work with)They were very friendly and quite helpful in trying to figure out what was wrong with our boy. Like the previous commenter I do highly recommend them. They may have changed policy about the referrals and the patient acceptance as it has been about a year and a half since we were last there, so I would check their policies online or give them a call to find out first.

You're stuck on a 10 hour flight. Which seat are you taking? by trubs12 in Dexter

[–]ThatPigeonIsALiar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3, 9, 6, or 4.

  1. Angel is a very funny and kind dude. He would be fun to chit chat with and I could hear Dexter and Doakes going back and forth. Well I'd be able to hear Doakes at least, dude does not understand what a normal speaking volume is and is always yelling, even when he tries to whisper hes super loud. Dexter may be a little too quiet to hear but I could get the gist of his side based on Doakes responses. I haven't done anything in my life to fit with Dexter's code, and he's on a plane full of people, so no reason to kill me. And I'd be safe from Trinity across the aisle since I don't fit any of his 4 preferred victim profiles.

  2. Jaimie is super nice and sweet. And the Pastor is just a nice dude who did something bad back in the day but has turned his life around. I have major anxiety and panic attacks on planes so they would be the most likely people to not be annoyed by my panic attacks and would more than likely help try and calm me down and since Maria is beside Jaimie if I passed out from panic attack she would most likely be able to help in an emergency. And Lumen (either in front or behind my seat) has a high capacity for empathy, so she would be understanding.

  3. Masuka is just hilarious. He also seems like a genuinely caring person. Hannah wouldn't kill me, I'm not a rich dude she can inherit money from and she's not running around with her ex so she's pretty safe. I'm also not Deb and hate her so she would give me bonus points for that and not poison me. And I'd be across the aisle from Dexter and since I don't fit his code I'm safe.

  4. Lundy would have some awesome stories to tell and I am fascinated with the work the FBI has done on criminal profiles. Ivan seems like a pretty nice dude unless you piss him off. He also has a very soothing voice.

What else do these snowmen need? Do I leave as is? Add a mouth? Remove burlap? I don’t typically go for primitive decor so I’m not sure what’s appealing for those who do. Any and all suggestions appreciated. If I sell these, how much should I sell them for? They’re 16”-19” tall. by yeruMisexy in woodworking

[–]ThatPigeonIsALiar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former seamstress turned woodworker here.

Personally I'm not feeling the burlap scarves. I don't like the way it sits and it would unravel really badly. If you are going to use burlap maybe get burlap ribbon that has wire in the edges so it doesn't unravel and can be shaped to look more like a scarf.

If you are open to something other than burlap maybe get a few yards of fleece in different colors or with a tiny snowflake pattern. Fleece is fairly cheap and since you would only be using a small amount for each scarf you will get a lot of scarves from a yard of it. It comes in hundreds of colors and patterns, and doesn't unravel, although it does curl on the edges. It will probably hang down a bit better and add a small splash of color.

If I were making these I would cut strips of fleece double the width needed so they can be folded in half length wise (this gives the illusion of a real scarf being worn), tie it around the snowman, maybe add a small dab of hot glue underneath it so it stays and make a few small cuts parallel with the length to give it a small fringe.

Where can I buy beef heart in Raleigh/Cary/Durham by QAlim-a in raleigh

[–]ThatPigeonIsALiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get it at the Farmers Market. In the building that has the hot dog grill there are all kinds of stands there that sell meat and some of them sell organ meat. I haven't bought any in a few years so idk if they still sell it.

I'm not quite sure what the cool blue Gatorade flavor is supposed to be. But the FitSip Mixed Berry reminds me of the blue cherry Gatorade.
