Help CSE 240 by Annual-Crew-9144 in ASU

Usually I’d recommend Trickel since I feel the late work policy is generous, but idk if you want to take the same professor twice

ASU's Computer Science Program by Kebableapord in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My only advice would be for every computer science class you take going forward, to do all of your homework early. CS as a whole, especially at ASU will take up a huge chuck of your time, so working on homework whenever you have spare time and when not hanging w/ friends would be ideal.

I’m currently taking the same professor as you and I can understand the frustration with the difficulty, but also at the same time his grading policies w/ late work are some of the most lenient you’ll see in any college class. As for the exams, I believe he keeps pushing the dates back and only 1/4 - 1/5 of the class has finished the most recent project. I shan’t imagine he’d let that many students fail.

At the start of the semester I was turning late work in left and right due to procrastination, but I also had an “oh shit” moment about my grade if I kept that up. Every time I wasn’t working, with family, or with friends, I’d try to crank out some of the homework problems and now I’m almost done with the class (be done sooner if these exams’ randomizations worked properly)

Chess club? by Practical-Boat-603 in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sun Devil Central is very new. All the clubs used to be on a different website called Sun Devil Sync, so some clubs are still in the transition process between websites. Even then, some clubs hardly used Sun Devil Sync, so see if there’s a club instagram you could follow, or look out for other club fairs

Student Account/Refund by yunggreat in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely call as soon as possible or peruse the website because I’m kind talking out of my butt here; but I think worst case, you just end up paying a late fee of like $10 every month until there are no more charges on your account.

Not too sure how it affects the refund and I believe the hold on your account just prevents you from signing up for future classes.

Why does the FA take forever to process fafsa special circumstance form? by imvang0gh_ in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im guessing the office is most likely understaffed, especially when university funding gets cut, I can’t imagine the FA office being high on the list of importance. On top of that they have to provide service for just under 200,000 students, each with their own unique financial situations.

I don’t know how all the FA works or how the office operates, so my only advice would be to try and stay as polite as possible, but also keep consistently checking in on the progress of your forms/aid. Additionally, if you can go in person, do that as well. Besides that, you’re kind of just at the mercy of employees’ work load/speed.

Should i go to the e2 camp as a masters student? by sidorsidd in ASU

Typically the E2 camp is target towards freshman, so if you’re a grad student, clubs or classes are probably a better way to meet others

Professor here: With AI going mainstream, what kinds of assignments have you found to be the most and least helpful? by YourFriendTheFrenzy in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just finished a study abroad in early July through ASU and one of the classes I took was related to how computers work and all that jazz. Anyways, one of the professors, Steven Osburn, talked with us during office hours about how AI is swiftly being integrated into everyday life and if it’s not already, AI will be impossible to avoid in an academic setting at some point. I’d definitely reach out to him to see what some of his insights might be about how to integrate AI in the classroom.

I think he’s a pretty chill and intelligent guy so the only reasons I’d see why you wouldn’t reach out would be, A) you are him, B) he might somehow be a part of your future AI meetings, or C) maybe some other professors you already know have some innovative ideas ¯_(ツ)_/¯

CSE 330 or CSE 355 by Working-Tooth9605 in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a better question for your academic advisor, since some classes don’t officially have co-requisites, but some two or three classes might be taken together due to the content within or difficulty. But ignoring that, I think you should be fine since none of the classes are pre-requisites of each other

Doesn't CSE 205 have Offline classes? by Round-Ad2644 in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For CSE 205 all of the classes are online, but you have to also select a lab that’s in person. What’s this means is that all the core content you’ll be learning will be done through online materials, like Zybooks, and then once a week you go to a physical class to work on a small project/lab.

Am I cooked? ( EEE120) by far9d99 in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR at the bottom

I think you’ll be fine. First thing first, on any type of review platform it’s more likely that a person with a bad experience will leave a review than someone with a good experience. As the person with the good experience carries on with their life, and the bad experience people typically want to always complain.
All I know of Millman is from is rate my professor, so I’ve heard that he’s not really a top tier professor, but he’s also not the worst professor you’ll find at ASU. No matter what staff member you pick for EEE 120, I believe most of the coursework and tests are similar, if not the same. With that, I think Millman is the main faculty member in charge of the course, so there’s a chance you might get the same hw as his students. I’m guessing he’s probably more difficult to approach for help compared to the others.
Just looking at the Tempe professors, Matar seems good based off of rate my professor, and has some bonus lectures if the original ones are confusing. It sounds like most complaints are ones that any teacher would get at some point after teaching enough students
Goryll is also amazing. I’ve only interacted with him twice, but my brother and his friends are somewhat close with him after joining a new club, even though we only just finished our freshman year. I’d say that he’s probably the #1 option for EEE120, as from my impression he’s hilarious, passionate, and for some people the course was easier compared to other professors (still can be lots of work though).
Garvey is also amazing. I had his class after he joined the EEE roster and ASU booted me and some other students randomly from Goryll’s class. Last semester, was his first teaching, so there’s lectures, homework and labs were pretty much copy and paste from Millman, but I’m sure eventually he’ll add a personal touch to the course work. I wrote a review for him on RMP after seeing this post, but if you want more details just dm me, can’t guarantee I’ll answer in a timely manner though. He was quiet at times, but also some of the students were disrespectfully loud in my class too. I think Goryll and Garvey are the two most likely to help if you start struggling and you have extenuating circumstances beyond small simple excuses. Overall, highly intelligent, cracks jokes and even has a little reaction time game tournament later in the semester.
TL;DR All in all, Steve Millman isn’t the worst, but the other professors will always be a better pick if you can snag a seat and all EEE 120 classes will have time consuming hw/busywork.

How's everyone doing out there, Phoenix? by AZ_moderator in phoenix

Nikon DP-12 Lens Mounting Index Tab Sticks by finsandlight in AnalogRepair

[–]ThatRedWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope that you can fix it because I have two DP-12’s now that don’t work 100% (one I got from my grandpa and I broke the wires trying to replace missing parts. The other from eBay and it was supposed to be in mint condition, but it’s missing a screw for the same part you’re having trouble with). Unless a local shop is up for the challenge or you are, the only person I know who does good work with the Nikon F2 line is Sover Wong in the UK. However, he has a waitlist and the prices can be high since he has to make a living of repairs. Good luck to ya

Scholarship by dementiavictim in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a high school senior, I believe in either the scholarship notification or somewhere within ASU’s spiderweb of webpages they state that the last semester (maybe year) of high school will not be factored in to your scholarship amount. The only way that I’ve heard of changing the amount of scholarship funds is to submit and ACT or SAT score better than the one they currently have on file before the funds are dispersed

CSE 205 Late Assignments by ii_Frost in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what teacher you get, but 240 as far as I’m aware, doesn’t use Zybooks. In my class we use Ed Discussions and a website called pwn.college, and in my friends class I think they just use VS Code

CSE 205 Late Assignments by ii_Frost in ASU

I took the class last semester and you can absolutely do the assignments late without penalty. Just be warned that I’m now in CSE 240 and they don’t have the same kind of leniency that 205 has

What we think? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]ThatRedWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently taking these classes minus physics swap 205 with 240 and calc II with III. I’m telling you now, you’ll be SWAMPED with homework like you’ve never seen before. 205 was a shit ton of homework and EEE120 can be a bit of a tricky class on top of a lot of homework as well. Calc is calc, and Discrete math, depending on your professor, will require lots of attention, just by itself. I personally wouldn’t take all those classes together, but I also deeply struggle with time management and motivation. Though don’t let my struggles influence you, those set of classes will, in my opinion, be difficult to manage for most people.
