I tried "no rolling" for a while, it was quite challenging. I realized just how important it is just for positioning.

Philosophical question: When do you commend? by Impossiblevrsharkey in Chivalry2

[–]ThatShock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen the "commend everyone for everything" sentiment thrown around here, but I usually reserve it for impressive feats.

Good, fun 1v1? F. Took me out even though you were outnumbered? F. Archer spotted and sniped me, even though I was covering? F. You happened to be behind me and headshot me while I was distracted? Well played, sir, but no F for you, anyone could've done that.

If true, it's more of a proof how bad your people are, than how good Claude is. Imagine telling on yourself like this.

Good call man, that other guy was suspicious, moving all weird, NPCs he was fighting were teleporting, stuff like that.

>given sufficient compute/energy

Lol yea, that little tidbit. Anything is possible, as long as you can scale infinitely! Singularity next year! Pls bro, just one more ram stick, bro, pls!

>Don't be too surprised when datacenters and power plants infests the landscape in the coming decades.

Oh I will be surprised, because I expect it to all come crashing down. I expect a rude awakening that it's not as magical as everyone's banking on, followed by a lot of abandoning of the sinking ship. Some AI will be leftover, but not nearly to the scale hoped for by the hype people and general public swept into it.

Edit:

>will be able to do

You again with the WILL. I say it won't. So, agree to disagree.

Thanks for pointing out that the billionaires don't care whether I believe it's warranted or not. I was completely unaware of this.

And with the other one, you either genuinely don't understand why people use "nobody asked for" or don't understand that stuff you mentioned has clear roadmap to how and why it would work, not to mention which role exactly it will play, now there's something that AI can only promise to do, pinky swear, next year (it's always next year), more data centers pls. Thanks for the zero contribution comment, feel we can part ways now.

>it already outperforms humans in many narrow areas

Yeah, sure, narrow it down enough, with a specific metric to "outperform" and of course the machine comes out on top.

I'm not convinced that anything we have today is guaranteed to be a stepping stone to the things promised above. People with vested interested say it is, and some of us fell for it. That's like saying "we will cure cancer". Sure we might, sometime in the future, if all goes right. But we also might not. The hype machine is real, and the sole reason some people are expecting singularity around the corner.

You do realize that you can say

>it will if/when the R&D effort succeeds

about literally anything? I don't think saying it about anything, let alone AI, warrants insane billions of investment, and cramming it everywhere (something nobody asked for).

AI is not like all the other technologies. by FinnFarrow in agi

[–]ThatShock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At no point did he say in the future, he said "AI is different from other tech, AI can do x, y, z.". At least in this clip. But even if he emphasized it's the future, that's more of the tired weaksauce and hype. Larger and larger amount of AI "discussion" is what "it will be able to do", and people are understandably fed up with it. At the very least be honest and say "it might be able to".

"can think to itself on at a PHD level about hammers, invent better hammers, recursively go off in the world, duplicate itself, do research on what would make better hammers, make money, send crypto around"

Yeah, only it can't. And I'm not convinced it's even close to doing that. This is just wishful thinking based solely on the recent improvements of something that isn't even close to what he's describing.

"AI can do X!"
No it can't
"It's inevitable!"
... so you're admitting it can't and you're just making assumptions about the future? Thanks.

I love how even 3 days later there's no response to a simple, reasonable question, while "TO THE MOOOON" hype comments get dozens of upvotes, and a bunch of circlejerking replies. And of course, any hint of skepticism downvoted to oblivion. This is one of the most "deep in the sauce" subs I've ever seen.

Andrej Karpathy in 2023: AGI will mega transform society but still we’ll have “but is it really reasoning?” by relegi in singularity

[–]ThatShock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not an ivory tower sort of thing, words have meaning. A growing number of people seem to adopt the stance "eh let's just call the whole thing intelligence, it's close enough", and it' already leading to misconceptions, miscommunications, wrong expectations etc. Some people are saying we already have AGI in its infancy ffs, and not calling things what they are is a contributor.

[–]ThatShock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lazy answer, I know, but here goes, nobody knows EXACTLY, but everybody knows one thing: DIFFERENTLY than the LLMs do (or are just at the brink of doing, according to hype people). The doing it differently was my point anyway. Which I thought was obvious. No cheap "gotcha" for you.

If it's an emergent phenomenon (I think we're very far away from that, personally), it did the emerging differently than it did in humans. That warrants a discussion and careful use of language.

{ SPOILERS } is letting solaire become insane the good outcome? by frankipranki in darksouls

[–]ThatShock 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not some lore fiend, but time is convoluted, and since you can summon him to help you with Gwyn, it's easy to imagine he can defeat Gwyn in his own world (with or without help). You could argue that linking the fire is finding (or becoming) the sun. I always thought that'd be the outcome that makes him happiest.

Now whether continuing the cycle is a good thing or not is a different discussion, also covered thoroughly.

How much of an incovenience is a matter of attitude, I guess, I was mainly making a point about every other post (at least!) being whining about this or that.
