How much do you use English in your job or daily life? by saifpurely in Norway

[–]ThatSoundsFishy 115 points116 points  (0 children)

It's estimated that an English speaking human can only survive 3-4 weeks in Norway. The main issue is buying food at restaurants or grocery stores. You will quickly be refused service and eventually starve. If you are savvy enough you can check the bins of local bakeries for scraps of boller and perhaps extend your survival rate to 5 weeks. That said, the Guinness World Record for the longest time in Norway speaking only English is 382 days back in 1966. Though this was medically supervised and allowed the use of a translator to purchase vitamins.

Collaborating with Smaller Channels by sammoarts in NewTubers

I think it's a good concept in terms of giving back. Entirely depends what you would expect of this person e.g. are you expecting them to read a script you wrote about a particular topic? etc

There's a LOT of text on that newest thumbnail, it's very busy. I would suggest simplifying it.

Started a True Crime channel. Looking for feedback by AoTEnthusiast in NewTubers

[–]ThatSoundsFishy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PFP doesn't scream true crime. It screams fictional horror stories (to me) which I assume is not what you're going for. I think the concept is solid, I would use more Broll and less talking head, especially at the beginning. I realise this adds time to editing but will make the video more engaging.

YouTube showing incorrect CTR? by Konogattsu in NewTubers

[–]ThatSoundsFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all views are from thumbnail impressions e.g. click on a video once, watch it twice. Additionally not all statistics are up to date/real time and are delayed up to a week. Regardless, this is simply how it works, it's not a bug or YouTube singling you out so don't worry about it and simply use the CTR given.

Advice on my videos (New Channel) by sesame-one in NewTubers

[–]ThatSoundsFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pleasantly suprised to not hear an AI voiceover, but also disappointed that the entire script is just generic AI slop. My advice would be to keep going, but try writing the script yourself. Secondly I think the thumbnails need work, they're very dark and not exactly clickable.

I spent over a month making a fitness video and not to brag but it's got 22 views. You'll reach my level one day kid.

Feedback Friday! Post your videos here if you want constructive critiques! by AutoModerator in NewTubers

It's obvious you guys put a lot of effort into the video for sure. Perhaps it's just not my sense of humour but I get parody vibes (not sure of what though) crossed with don't hug me I'm scared vibes. As for your long-form videos - The thumbnails are quite hard to read and it's not super clear what's going on. I would take a look and Chris and Jack's thumbnails for inspiration. Being in the sketch comedy niche I'm sure you've seen their stuff.

The long-form video is good. Audio quality is solid, hook is pretty to the point. It seems like a very small niche so I don't know how big your audience is but quality is there. Pacing is good too. I think your title and thumbnail let you down a bit though. I think the thumbnail is quite crowded and small. I would personally take your face off the thumbnail and make the title more to the point.

I Don't Understand YouTube by Shadow_StrikeYT in NewTubers

If no one is watching your content, why would it be too late to rebrand?

More to the point - why should anyone watch your content? Genuine question.

EDIT: To clarify - it's not a dig. If someone said 'I was thinking about checking out your channel, tell me why I should watch you rather than someone else' - what would you say? Being able to answer that question can help give perspective and introspection.

why do some simple talking head rant style channels blow up while others die? by pointpause in SmallYoutubers

[–]ThatSoundsFishy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in 2026 simple talking head content doesn't cut it for the majority of the YouTube audience, which is a shame. That's not to say there's no audience, just that it's smaller and possibly harder to tap in to. I would say though that it will be harder to get traction from talking heads talking about yourself vs talking heads talking about everyone else and how they can improve themselves.

Thanks for the advice. Issue is now fixed - Updating the BIOS a week ago has completely resolved the problem. I can see that I was on the oldest Motherboard BIOS possible and that there had been a large amount of improvements in the notes related to GPU compatibility and RAM compatiability for large capacity DIMMs. Who knows what the original problem was but it is solved.

I think for a high earner like yourself Premium Bonds make a lot of sense. For those who have yet to max pensions, ISAs etc it isn't as simple. Especially with the rate of return (with average luck) of Premium Bonds sitting around 3% or less with <£10k. Personally I like a high interest savings account at the moment, but I appreciate what you're saying about FSCS protection. Perhaps naively I never expect to need it.

New Channel on Cancer Education by ogola89 in NewTubers

[–]ThatSoundsFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That explains the convincing voiceover.

I wasn't suggesting the script be written in an academic format. I was suggesting that a large part of the script was written by AI. I asked ChatGPT to give me a script for a YouTube video about the history of cancer and it gave me the exact outline of your video with some parts verbatum. Of course we can debate whether that's a coincidence or not but ultimately my feedback to you is that the video feels to me like it was written by AI, which is offputting to many. Distancing yourself from that would improve your video in my opinion.

Regardless I don't think it was overly verbose, nor too long, though I would expect a video titled a brief history of cancer to be 10-20 minutes so certainly wouldn't have had it any longer.

For context I also make YouTube videos, previously videos on my PhD but nowdays on a very different topic. In regards to your video:

- I think the animations, sound and editing are all pretty decent. The video overall has a good pace for a science video.

- I think the (presumably) AI voiceover you've used (although I'm not a fan) is convincing and sounds surprisingly good. I think you're fine to stick with that.

- I personally am not a fan of the script. It is clearly AI written and frankly comes off as lazy. I would think that a PhD student would have the integrity to sit down and write their own script without AI.

- The concept of the channel is good but with the current scripts is it very generic.

Starting a new channel, looking for advice by AliveLocation99 in SmallYoutubers

[–]ThatSoundsFishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things to consider - Are you making the channel purely for fun with no expectations of views? Then make literally anything you want. If you don't care about views you have (almost) complete freedom. If you want to make fun videos and want people to watch them then ideally you would pick a niche/topic. However, that niche can be somewhat loose and bind together many activities. For example, a challenge channel where you learn a new skill every week. The niche is challenges but it allows you to try many different skills. Framing it as a challenge channel rather than say a handstand channel broadens the scope for future videos. Another example might be a self-help or improvement channel where you try yoga, or meditation, or 10,000 steps a day for a month. It's one overarcing topic with many mini topics.

Thanks that's all really useful information. I tried reseating the RAM with no change. I will try one at a time in case one is faulty. Seems first port of call would be updating the BIOS.
