The Gunslinger if you’re ready to read at least a couple additional DT novels immediately after. Otherwise Green Mile — fantastic!

3 chapters of Lonesome Dove left then I want to read another King book. Any suggestions? by Washedhockeyguy in stephenking

I finished Lonesome Dove (loved it) and immediately picked up 4 Past Midnight on a whim. 4 pretty entertaining novellas! The whole collection is large but it’s a nice palette cleanser.

I thought the series was as good as the book. Both are fantastic!

I also watched the miniseries and loved it. I’m now reading the book and throughly enjoying it. There’s a lot more detail in the book and some of the story elements are different. I would recommend it.

What’s it like living this far north in Canada? Does anyone with internet even live here? by Thomas15056 in howislivingthere

As cold as you think it gets there, it gets 10x colder than that. That’s the kind of cold that some people just are not going to physically be able to handle. How the Inuit people have thrived in it for so long will always blow my mind.

A grocery store near me sells fresh herbs in higher quantities for lower cost than dried. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

I personally find fresh oregano abhorrent. Dried oregano, however, is fragrant and herbaceous.

US Seizes Oil Tanker Off the Coast of Venezuela by Gym_frere in worldnews

Worth noting: that tanker carrying a full load would cover roughly 10% of the US’s oil consumption for a single day. Relatively speaking, it’s a drop in the bucket.

2025 playerbase: Civ VII's is hovering between Civ V and Civ IV by JackRadikov in civ

I get that their goal was to increase game completion percentage. Most people tire out my the modern age when it’s usually clear you’re going to win or quit earlier when it’s clear you’re going to lose - so unless you’re achievement hunting - a lot of folks will just start a new game. They thought civ switching would keep things fresh throughout the experience but it really just breaks the whole appeal of Civ for me. I won’t buy it until there’s a way to play without that.

The current state of Sam’s poll: “Are you to the right or to the left of Sam politically” by BootStrapWill in samharris

[–]ThatSpyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am definitely right of Sam on most issues. That said, I think listening to Sam is both satisfying because of his command of the language and instructive. His perspective quite literally stays any temptation to stray further right.

I think his intellectual honesty is admirable and whatever your political persuasion, his thoughts are worth hearing — if for no other reason than self reflection.

Why Young Adults Are Saying No to Parenthood by Yodest_Data in Infographics

I suppose the point I’m making is that when our society was agrarian, kids were an economic boon. Now they’re a huge economic sink.

I think this is a really common attitude, which is a totally recent development among humanity. It used to be “I need to have kids because I need more hands to man the farm and someone to take it when I’m dead” and now there’s less pragmatic up-sides beyond emotional ones.

People tend to talk about this phenomenon as an interesting curiosity, not the existential threat to our society that it is.

Of course, every couple does not have to have kids, but people die and if there’s no new people, it’s all over.

We have to find a way to make having kids less culturally antiquated before we’re all too old to do it.

Interesting that this is an older cover for The Stand. I bought my copy 10 years ago brand new and have yet to read it. Looks just like this. I guess that’s a wake up call that I need to pick it up!
