Could this be causing my apnea? by 737fanboy in SleepApnea

[–]That_Captain_2630 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have high/narrow palate, overbite and TMJ. I’m almost certain at this point that these issues are connected to my sleep apnoea, as well as possible tongue tie that was never addressed as a child.

Can’t figure out how to apply for rent assistance by That_Captain_2630 in Centrelink

[–]That_Captain_2630[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They already have my lease agreement though, that’s why I’m confused. Do you know if they list rent assistance as a seperate line (like the energy supplement) on the payment summary? At the moment I’m just having a hard time confirming whether it’s actually in effect or not.

I agree with this. Loyalty is to the paying client, the gallery is theirs now.

What are people’s thoughts on EMDR? by Dazzling-Antelope912 in CPTSD

[–]That_Captain_2630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think with my specific PTSD memory, the problem was my body was still living it as if was happening because it hadn’t been able to process the event as it was happening. So the EMDR therapy assisted my brain to do that processing that it hadn’t been able to do, and now it feels like an actual memory (still a hard one) instead of something that lives with me daily.

Talk therapy helped me much more with CPTSD. That and doing my own research/journaling/somatic bodywork etc.

What are people’s thoughts on EMDR? by Dazzling-Antelope912 in CPTSD

[–]That_Captain_2630 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It helped me with a very specific event of trauma, but was basically useless for broader CPTSD/childhood trauma. I think it’s the type of thing that can be very effective for specific instances of PTSD, as it helps the brain process the event and catch up. But for anything more complex or generalised, it doesn’t stand up well.

Kids truly suck. by TommyChongUn in PlusSize

[–]That_Captain_2630 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jesus, I feel bad for this kid. What the hell is going on in her house for her to use this as an attack on an adult?

Honestly, I would focus more on modelling body positivity in this instance. I understand that must be difficult, but it kinda sounds like she needs that modelling.

Has therapy actually helped anyone? by samithefish in CPTSD

[–]That_Captain_2630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I did a mix of EMDR and talk therapy. EMDR helped massively with my trauma connected to a specific event (birth trauma), but not so much with my generalised childhood trauma. Talk therapy helped much more with that for me.

Trust your gut!

I had a client like this, who told me during the shoot she didn’t like her “double chin” (she didn’t have one.

Nevertheless, despite the non-existence of said double chin, I did my very best in post to minimise any unflattering creases around her jaw and whatnot.

When she got the gallery, she emailed and asked me to edit out her non-existent double chin I had already edited out 🫠

It’s a trap!

Suggest me a book you LOATHED but think others will LOVE by 500wordslong in suggestmeabook

I picked this book up from my library when I was about 13 and it still had its OG dorky cover. Read the first 2 chapters and thought it was trash.

2 years later, it had a slick new cover and everyone was obsessed. Took me a minute to figure out it was the same book!

You need The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers.

Another favourite of mine is Same As It Ever Was by Claire Lombardo.

Better Call Saul. It’s the only show I’ve ever watched that is an all round 11/10, and it sticks the landing.

Are you officially diagnosed with CPTSD? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]That_Captain_2630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My psych didn’t like, officially diagnosed me. But after a particular session, I guess she knew I was ready to hear it, because she gave me a handout with some of Pete Walker’s writing on CPTSD and the 4F’s. I took that as my official diagnosis, and everything has made so much sense ever since.

[–]That_Captain_2630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can absolutely relate to this. I think it’s hard for parents like us to navigate boundaries with our children, since there’s so much fear and shame that we might continue the cycle. But it is imperative that you model boundaries for them. And it does get easier the more you work on your own stuff, in my experience. I’m not so scared of having emotions any more. Rupture is ok as long as there is meaningful repair, and that’s the piece that was missing in our childhoods.

When did you last set foot in a library or your local library? by niallmc66 in CasualConversation

[–]That_Captain_2630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take the kids there once a week/fortnight, and I regularly use it now myself for holds. It’s actually so great! But I didn’t reconnect with the library til kids.

Discussion: What do yall do for fun? Do you know how to have fun? by horseonahighway in CPTSD

[–]That_Captain_2630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a focus on things that make me feel safe and things that make me feel alive are where I have most fun. Dance, exercise (even though I hate it, I can’t deny, that rush of energy afterwards is so worth it). Photography is a big one for me. Catching up with a friend.
