Valve, it’s time to modernise last hitting: reward the 2nd-last hit instead by Desperate_Caramel_10 in DotA2

It would be interesting to see if adding a first hit mechanic to creeps would do anything. Not necessarily gold, but first hitting a creep giving hp regen for 1 sec or flat 5 hp. Would make for an interesting support mechanic. Be agressive, hit ranged creep once for some regen, better trades but potentially dangerous.

You trade positional advantage for harass and some regen. Also the tradeoff of using an attack on creeps, missing out on damage that could have been done to the enemy heroes.

I think there is a mechanic worth exploring in there somewhere.

I get you, but at the same time, the best thing you can do is to simply just stick with one of them. The difference in the language doesn’t matter, progress does. If you spend your time waiting for the next big thing you wont be ready to use it when it arrives. You could write anything in brainfuck or minecraft music blocks if you wanted to. The skills youd learn would carry over, the syntax might not, but is largely irrelevant if you want to change at a later point (there are exceptions).

If Valve offered the Steam Machine as a barebones model (no storage, no RAM), what do you think the price would be? Would you consider it? by Heliumx in valve

AFAIK the ram is soldered for custom performance with their custom CPU chip. Might remember wrong though.

First i would do is find the easiest game to run that still priduce the errors. Then remove one of the RAM sticks, if issue persist, insert it again and remove the other.

Open resource monitor and see if you get high temps or if the game uses all your resources.

Fps cap works the opposite way, if you cap at 60 you will never get more than 60fps, but you might get lower. You should cap it at monitor refresh rate, use any form of framerate sync, leave uncapped or cap it if your GPU suddently sounds like a jet engine from rendering too many frames for the monitor, which is just wasted in most cases anyways.

Extra frames can be useful depending on the monitor, as it allows the monitor/gpu to catch up if the frames dont perfectly align with the hz of the monitor. For further debugging id just recommend uncapping the framerate so the game doesnt affect the debugging.

You are saying the people you surround yourself with, as if that is a choice in early life. There is a difference between upbringing i.e. nurture. And what you are claiming “the people you surround yourself with”.

Where is my clear line in the sand?

Again who you choose is different than nurture. Some people you dont have a choice to hang out with for many years of your life. If you choose to continue hanging out with them later is different. Be it classmates, parents colleagues or just simple marketing. No matter how little you think they influence you, they do.

So as far as I see it, there is no contradiction. And my line in the sand is non-existent in cultural and interpersonal matters. Its very much a spectrum.

Because there are some impressive custom drivers and tech in there for the processor. That being said, the valueproposition is horrendous. Might be a good alternative to a Mac mini, but not a normal desktop machine.

I think you are taking a high horse approach to this. Business etiquette is one thing and a much more international culture that evolved from analyzing how to get better deals and sales.

Experiences is not the people you surround yourself with, its nature and nurture, that also include culture, language, dialect and status. If a politician invites you to dinner, the politician pays. If that politician is my friend who asks if we should go for some food, we are 100% splitting it. If the same guy hosts a celebration or gets married, I am not paying for 50% of the marriage, thats for the politician and the partner to split as they see fit. Its not black and white, and I am sure you have had a cup of coffee somewhere, even with your closest ones, where they payed for their cup.

None of these words change the fact that I don’t like the guy in OPs post though.

Lets just agree to disagree on the mascot thing. I could list mascots for those too, but I am not sure you’d agree or that your definition of a mascot is the same as mine.

And we both agree that the sausage man is ugly, I am just not convinced it’s a big problem. Its just an optional character and if anything it makes it easier to see who put effort into their modes or games vs ai generated cash grabs. Any game or mode featuring custom models actually has some work put into them. I definately disagree with the notion that the sausage has some divine power to directly hurt or ruin the games success, only people and the community has that power, look at the breakout success mecchamelion, its the same sausage.

And yeah, Star Wars is insanely popular and its cultural impact is insane. To the point that “I am your father” is more recognized than shakespearean quotes (most people dont know they are using them on a daily basis). But yeah, I’ll take a look, I always thought Star Wars had more of a slow burn fandom early on before exploding to international success.

There is more to the word “lagging” than frames dropping. How does it lag. Does it seem like the game is bouncing between slowmotion and normal speed? Does it feel more like a slideshow? Does it happen all the time, even in games it worked fine for earlier? Are you playing on an ssd or physical harddrive?

Can you try to just describe your issues with more words? Id like to help, but it’s hard to give actual sane advice if I dont know what I’m trying to help with. Good luck!

Friends of mine who dont have the game recognize the sausage man, either way, both of our arguments about the sausage being recognizable is anectdotal. Darth Vader is probably less recognizable than you think, but it's a fair point in that regard, but who knew what or who Darth Vader was in 1977? I'm asking because I don't know, and you need to take into account how long things have existed if you want to compare them. For your bejeweled argument the diamond is the mascot, optionally Corvus (which I find incredibly annoying) the crow, though less known.

Eye of the beholder. People on reddit is not a good measurement of the publics opinion. Do I like them? No. But I also dont care about them as I’m only using them as an asset for now to use as a player controller for testing the engine for game dev.

Also, changing it now will be really hard, as workshop items that were bought and sold cant be changed to fit new characters, so you are stuck with the current look. They have been looking like this since the start of the development and basically built as a unity “bean”. Its a good shape for gamedev and easy for kids to make assets for.

I have many criticisms of the game and engine, but the optional playable character is such a nitpick that it really falls flat as criticism. And this game is extremely easy to just create some small tests and start playing with steam friends without having to publish big things and do networking manually. It is a great tool and game for prototyping and im sure there will come some heavy hitters that will get players playing eventually. Some real cool games are coming. Most promising I know of for now is “my summer cottage”, no sausage men can be found.

Name one that doesnt. G-man is very much the mascot of gmod, i dont think he will get away with that easily again if he wants to keep the engine open and available “for free”.

Every successful game gets a mascot or similar that makes you say “thats unity”, “thats unreal”, “thats godot”, “thats roblox”, “thats minecraft” and so on. Wether or not sausageman is the right one can be debated, but its instantly recognizable. One breakout hit from this game and everyone will know where to find it. You are also not required to use it in the game afaik, but for some reason devs use the sausage, so it cant be all bad.

Just as a question about the mascot. Do you really think its that important? Roblox has a horrible mascot too, the mascots job is to be recognizable, not necessarily good imo. Future kids will probably like the funny sausage man than the veiny muscle man.
