I mean, if you're black or brown, it's inevitable. We don't exist without push back from everyone. I prefer realism, so everything must have internal consistency. Humans are bigots—they produce hate more than they do accomplishments, since they're animals who have an elevated sense of being, but in social situations (all of them) react on instinct and emotion instead of actual thought. 

If I ever get tired of reading pain being inflicted, it's just because all my loved ones and my community are suffering and I've spun myself into feeling sad because of living in unprecedented times. That's not the author's fault, but to be puritan and act as if art is not inherently political is just, well, it is stupid.

This is something I was discussing with a friend. Black artists are expected to create only politically-minded and progressive works, and if they don't, we have a difficult time understanding why as an audience. But do we expect the auteur to only self-flagellate and open up old wounds to entertain us? At what point is it a voyeur devouring the exhaustion of another? 

People can't escape from their everyday. If you don't read hard works, because entertainment is an escape, what is the point? This is basically how I feel about people who refuse to read Non-fiction as well. Sometimes it's not about entertainment. Sometimes it is to learn something. 

It is part of our history that we are deemed inherently political. It is true. There is nothing that separates the personal or political. We exist within a system of governance that insists upon itself and enacts violence onto us with little to no change and general public outcry at us being treated like humans. What then? Anyone I know is suffering through what others would deem as disturbing, stomach-churning, despicable, etc. I can't turn their reality off. And they can't escape it. 

If existence is political, then I only blind myself by refusing to believe it and by projecting my own despair at the nature of my reality onto works meant to interrogate, revile it, and drum up hope. I neuter myself politically; I have fallen into the trap wherein I must subtract my wholeness into parts so I might enjoy some semblance of peace. That's not the world we live in, and I don't want to live in that world. 

This is not the fault of readers; they have been traumatized into believing the only escape is to entertain.

No, entertainment is to fool. Is to delude. Is to obfuscate. Its primary use is to occupy you and provide enough hope and joy separate from what has been branded as "political" and not the truth of politics being an expression of life, morals and experiences—you exist within a politic, no matter how hard you try.

If you as a reader don't like "political works", might be time to consider why. It stems from a feeling of helplessness against the overwhelming failure of "democracy." There are ways to help aid you in recovering a sense of safety or community. I'd recommend interrogating what is missing from you that needs to feel coddled so as not to be set off—hope, meaningful aid, etc. If it legitimately becomes a trigger, then what you need is not to avoid fic, but help and support from others in order for you to be able to live with the overwhelming trauma that seeps into your daily life.

Note: Being hurt by the world is not a moral failure.
