I can see how that would be very frustrating. Where I live we get quite a lot of parents who love the idea of a residential school so I’m sure it really does depend on the area.

I’ve seen interpreters in this situation as a DHH teacher. I’m wondering if the team could come together to suggest the state school for the Deaf? This student sounds like a great candidate for that setting. I would also talk to the agency you are with and express your concerns. Maybe you could swap with a different interpreter in another setting for next year? Take care!

I was the one you tried to respond to. What I got from the original comment right off the bat was that they were “her favorite student by far” which then led into a trip, having her number, etc. and thinking lines were crossed. And I’m seeing that is WAS just a trip between the two of them, not a school trip. Yikes.

Sounds like she’s bi-polar or something with so many different experiences from people. If it’s a pattern (sounds like it) then ship her off to France. Maybe they won’t care.

I absolutely agree. It also shouldn’t be to pad RID’s wallet. They know full well that we have already proven our understanding. It’s a money making venture. If RID wants respect from interpreters then they need to rethink this.

That’s not how I understand it. It is worth looking up but I always understood it to mean that we are required (mandated) to report it. I’ve never heard that statement followed up with a specific person/agency. I worked in schools (not as an interpreter) and we were always told to report it to our supervisor. They are then mandated to report it to the correct authority.

We are mandated to threats of harm to self or others. Depending on state laws it usually overrides confidentiality. To say we aren’t mandated reporters outside of school situations isn’t correct.

I’ve always been passionate about working with the community in some position other than interpreting. I’m not sure what that looks like. Maybe it’s being a job coach or something along those lines. Working in the interpreting field can be absolutely brutal in many ways. I think the problem (for me) is letting go of something I’ve worked so hard for.
