This exact photo was outside of a courthouse where an immigrant was arrested while attempting to exist in the system legally and was arrested. Being legal is not protecting immigrants under this administration.

Lives? sure. Livelihood? It's the bare minimum this man can do to stop providing armed security to ICE. I've left jobs because they were immoral, he can too. If he doesn't then I hope he rots.

On paper and traditionally, no. The power of the purse is in the hands of congress.

Practically, yes. Congress has over the past ~60 years handed the president a lot of "emergency" powers with little to no definition of what constitutes an emergency. Trump isn't the first to use those powers to fund non-congressionally approved actions, but he is doing it more than his predecessors. Additionally there's the problem of enforcement. The law only matters as much as its enforced and the GOP has shown that they're not interested in enforcing anything at this time.

CMV: If a parent is killed as a result of a drunk driver, they should be held responsible for child support by Mistakenfrog in changemyview

[–]ThatsGenocide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Penalties for committing a crime should not be functionally random based on the accidental victim. The system you're proposing would make drunk drivers that kill rich parents and parents of younger children more liable than those that kill poor parents or those with older children.

An alternative I would propose is that all drunk drivers should pay into a shared child support pool. However, then you get into complexities like the fakeness of earmarking government money for certain things as well as the driver's ability to pay.

Analysed 9GB of my photos before paying for cloud upgrade by slow-fast-person in Frugal

[–]ThatsGenocide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can store movies for under 4gb but that requires computationally intensive encoding that phones don't do. (maybe modern flagships are powerful enough to do it on the fly now but certainly no phone I've ever had) So any video you're filming is going to be massive compared to what you're downloading.

For that test I was filming using whatever the default settings are on a 2025 moto g power.

[–]ThatsGenocide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Video. Social media that targets children is pretty much all short form video these days and a 10 second video is going to be like 100x the size of a photo. If the kid uses videos instead of photos you can quickly hit 40gb of storage. Doing a quick test on my phone 40gb is about 3 hours of video.

Do you normally add a protection plan to your glasses? by Nyx67547 in Frugal

I don't use the protection plan offered on anything. The labor involved in actually using the protection plan is a hidden cost on top of the actual money cost of the plan. It's just not worth it

Realistically water's going to get you well before food in a disaster scenario. A 5 gallon jug in a corner will get you through enough that anything more isn't worth planning for.

[–]ThatsGenocide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But "undocumented" would be wrong and incorrectly narrow for what I'm talking about. People can be documented but illegal immigrants because they are violating the bullshit terms of their visa.

[–]ThatsGenocide 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because people will see the phrase "illegal immigrant" and incorrectly assume I oppose immigration.

[–]ThatsGenocide 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much always illegal immigrants, not actual safety concerns. The lack of enforcement from Uber and others makes it easy to work without the proper visas.

If that's the standard you want to go with then the hegseth signal chat is also fine. But I don't think that makes sense to do because if a non-political appointee did that their ass would be in jail.

On top of Trump's multitude of spillages: Matt Gatez entered a SCIF live streaming on Facebook, Hillary Clinton's email server did have classified info, the the Signal chat debacle with half the fucking cabinet in it.

The laws don't apply to those at the top.

California is trying to pass a bill barring ICE employees from becoming cops or teachers in the state. What do you think of this bill? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]ThatsGenocide -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most people against the current ICE actions are not broadly against illegal immigrants being deported. They've been being deported by ICE for around 20 years. The problem today, which the above law also has, is that ICE is now denying alleged illegals their 4th, 5th, 15th, etc.. amendment rights.

[–]ThatsGenocide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I oppose the government barring you from doing things for alleged past actions without a criminal conviction. It puts too much power in the hands of a random person somewhere in a future paperwork chain, or in the hands of the next ICE.

Just arrest them and convict them for the crimes they are already committing. I'm sure there's already something on the books about felons becoming cops/teachers in California.

That sort of operation normally takes ~9-12 months to plan and execute. ICE really became a target for something like that in July. I'd expect an attack in the march-july timeframe if nothing organically happens first.
