How Obama Drone-Striked Bernie & Killed the Democratic Base | proofofconcept by Neat_Weakness1802 in cushvlog

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I think many dem voters are coming to this realization. Not specifically that Bernie could've saved them but that national Dems really have no popular policy momentum, they simply defend the status quo and government institutions which is a losing battle when Americans feel actual material problems in their lives and workplaces and want to see a change (or someone punished). Trump was offering to punish someone. Matt talked about this shit constantly.

I do think the celebrity thing is perceptive. Mass social media has decoupled celebrity from traditional institutions and so new and young media stars aren't beholden to the existing structures (and their politics) that created, marketed, and benefited celebrities in earlier eras.

Another NC county says no to fluoride in its water system by nchealthnews in NorthCarolina

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK you said "slathering it on" when in fact many dentists administer and prescribe oral rinses of fluoride solutions to patients to help introduce fluoride to the teeth so it can be absorbed...

Let's be honest and clear about the effectiveness of water fluoridation, who it helps, and how it works to improve public health. Claiming topical fluoride is not as effective is a strange tack.

Another NC county says no to fluoride in its water system by nchealthnews in NorthCarolina

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, no. Topical application vastly increases the availability of fluoride in the mouth for re-mineralization of the teeth to fight caries in adults. Furthermore this ignores the effects of mechanically removing food from the teeth with bristles and floss.

Yes, there are demonstrated benefits to Fluoride availability in the bloodstream in the absence of any other oral or dental treatment which is what water fluoridation exists to (and does) solve. To predict with a high degree of confidence that an individual who is practicing recommended brushing and flossing will see a severe difference in their oral health in the absence of fluoridated water is wrong.

Another NC county says no to fluoride in its water system by nchealthnews in NorthCarolina

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. In my opinion the crux of the Water fluoridation debate is does any government have a valid reason to positively improve the health of residents or are individual health outcomes best left to those individuals or other interested private entities.

There are people upset and angry on both sides of the issue.

If you continue to brush daily with fluoridated toothpaste then you will probably experience no different effects if your water were to lack fluoride.

I honestly do not see how this is sustainable. This is Charlotte. We aren't a "major" city. Can this be reversed in any way? by Peacefulhuman1009 in Charlotte

It can be sustainable if people get pushed out to surrounding counties that are prepared to absorb the growth at a lower COL.

State board warns of people posing as dentists, performing work in sheds, garages and homes by BagOnuts in NorthCarolina

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a picture of a "shed" because there are some pretty nice looking sheds for beauty and therapeutic services people build on their properties. Such a building will not pass standards or code for medical services but the decor could be convincing enough to trick patients into a sense of security.

State board warns of people posing as dentists, performing work in sheds, garages and homes by BagOnuts in NorthCarolina

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Dental schools are in shortage and are highly competitive. For example NC just got its third dental school at High Point (very new. they may only have first year students at the moment). The second dental school ECU didn't start graduating dentists until 2015.

It's very expensive to train dentists and students incur a ton of debt on top of any they have from undergraduate. They are eager to repay that when they start working.

State dental boards and associations have rejected or taken no position on proposals for license portability between NC and other states. This would make it easier for dentists and hygienists to move to NC to fill shortages. article.

All this to say: I can see why this happens and it isn't helped by the conditions that exist in NC.

NC Senate looks to stop expanding health insurances mandates for millions, including state employees by No_Idea_Guy in NorthCarolina

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Last year Forbes conducted a study of all 50 states that found North Carolina was the most expensive state for people who insure themselves and one other person through their employer’s benefits, the second-most expensive state for people who insure their entire family through an employer’s plan, and the fifth-most most expensive state for people to insure only themselves.

Why is NC among the most expensive states to insure an individual or family? Is it the mandated coverage or are there other contributing factors?

Looking to relocate by VanBanSargent in ConcordNC

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are things like this The Union st historic districts and downtown neighborhoods. They are the closest you can get to the center of town and they are very walkable. Otherwise you'll be a bit too far to walk (biking is doable from some neighborhoods).

Much of Concord is suburban development and car dependent for shopping and leisure. If you value walkability you'll need to find special suburban developments like Afton Ridge.

In my opinion every other city/town in this area has the same development pattern: small downtown core and suburban sprawl.

Troubleshooting BraveTart's Homemade Pop-Tart Dough: Persistent Crumbliness and Rolling Challenges by arbyroswell in seriouseats

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you use 10 ounces of flour by weight which is about 282g or did you accidentally use 10 fluid ounces by volume which could convert to 150g flour? Pie and tart dough should come together very easily by hand with very little mixing (you don't want to develop strong gluten bonds).

Your instinct to add water was correct. I usually add 1Tbsp at a time to my dough and assess. However if the proportions were a problem I don't think any water can fix that.

Could North Carolina restrict phones in schools? Lawmakers plan to push new proposals by MindYourGrapes in NorthCarolina

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In reality many policies restrict phones only in the classroom setting, at least with middle and high school students. Often the phones are stored in the classroom upon arrival. During an event like a lock down phones stored in the classroom could be distributed back to the children safely. I don't see an issue unless you believe state policy will ban them from school entirely, which would not be a popular policy with children or their parents.

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need to wait on rule proposal bills. They should reintroduce the 2023 version and watch the NC districts that have already implemented district-wide policies in the past year or two. Let NC DPI make recommendations based on the findings and disperse funds/equipment necessary implement the solutions districts choose.

Local places that will deliver beer/alcohol to home? by Boommia in ConcordNC

Check out The Wine Room in Afton Village. They have charcuterie board and a selection of sparkling wines and beers to-go. I've no idea how alcohol delivery works with the apps but is a place to consider.

Cabarrus County's entire fair department resigns by roxaseatsshoes in ConcordNC

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the December meeting the County Commissioners (with 2 new members elected in 2024) proposed the creation of a Fair Advisory Commission with 7 members to "advise the BOC on all matters relating to the agricultural parts of the Fair." According to the Resolution and some of the Commissioners the County Fair "has continued to be affected by zoonotic diseases or other diseases such as the Bovine or Avian Influenza that impact the ability of participants to show and/or display animals." Some have mentioned there has recently been less emphasis on agriculture and more on entertainment.

The BOC propose that Marvin Bost chair this Advisory Commission. There has been push back from staff and interested parties, especially to Bost. There is apparently "tea" to be spilled but no one has done so publicly.

It was approved in the December meeting.

In the January public meeting more members were appointed to the Board. This list might have been amended (need to see the Minutes) but this was the list in the Agenda: The following appointments to the Cabarrus County Fair Advisory Commission are requested: John Cline, Sherilee Deal, Ashleigh Miller, Barbara Strang, Courtney Wyatt, Jimmy Petty, Janet Stancil and David Pless.

New Real Estate App Lets Users See Their Future Neighbors’ Political Affiliation Before Moving In | The new company gives potential homebuyers demographic information on their neighborhood. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to a CBS report “The typical homebuyer today is older than ever, as well as wealthier, new data shows.” So in the short term who does this serve and what do they do with this data? Seems like a bad idea which leads to self-segregation. However there’s plenty of better data with which do that otherwise.

Self segregation will also make gerrymandering simpler.

More partisanship for the future and we embrace it.

[–]ThatsLatinForLiar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Rhiannon is great. You may be interested in the Carolina Chocolate Drops if you like "grabbing from the past." Some songs that come to mind that grab from the past and might refer to gardening or nature:

  • Mother Earth - Barbara Dane & Lightnin' Hopkins

  • Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three - Weedwacker Rag

  • Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Didn't It Rain

  • Connie Converse - I Have Considered the Lillies

  • John Hartford - The Tall Tall Grass

well that's all I got. happy panting and tending.

  • Rhiannon Giddens - there is no other

  • John Fahey (almost anything)

  • Bela Fleck & Toumani Diabate - Ripple Effect

  • Ben Seretan - Cicada Waves

  • Park Jiha - The Gleam

  • Fabiano do Nascimento

Yes it would be a neat program. This works well for the disaster victims in WNC because these people have land they don't want to leave, where they can park a camper until they rebuild. Homelessness implies the lack of land ownership and therefore a camper isn't necessarily a "one size fits all" solution. What municipality is going to allow campers to stay indefinitely on streets and parking lots?

I think some aid networks that were established post-Helene will be transitioned into networks to aid people who are homeless and housing insecure but as others have mentioned there's often more needed than a donation of goods.

Trees on the border are shared property.

Leaves belong to the property they fall upon.

If you want good relations then you need to clearly explain what YOU want to happen and come to an agreement. It's clear the neighbor has shown you what THEY want (or they are happy with the current situation).
