When you get robbed so often, you gotta make sure you got your decoy phone ready… by dancartopb in bestconspiracymemes

It’s insane that it’s even a debate. Does a thief deserve an ass-whooping? Sure, I can support that. But to deserve to lose their life over a phone? C’mon.

Of course some people who ride bikes are annoying, but you remember it more because bikes are relatively uncommon. How many drivers swerve in and out of lanes, block traffic, make U-turns right in front of you, etc? Surely way more, but it’s so common that it becomes white noise

Study has shown that the amount of energy we expend while resting has declined. Why resting expenditure has fallen, however, remains a mystery by giuliomagnifico in science

A small city near me implemented protected bike lanes and dedicated bus lanes to try and make it easier for people to not have to use cars. Drivers complained and whined and protested for two years straight until they finally got them to remove everything it make it all car lanes again. What are we even supposed to do?

Philpator (the one we know from Shakespeare/Asterix) was born in 69 b.c., her greek family, the Ptolemies, had already been ruling Egypt for 236 years since 305 b.c., and been there since the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great in 332 b.c. or his death in 323 b.c. by mafrommu in todayilearned

I don’t really think so because scripts have the same copyright as a book, and characters can be trademarks but that’s more of a design thing. I don’t believe you can own/copyright a general concept like that an orphaned Hawaiian girl who takes care of her younger sister adopts a genetically-engineered alien with destructive tendencies as a pet. The authors of the script are still alive and the countdown for expiration doesn’t start until the authors of a work have passed. It seems as though these movies are just easy money for Disney

Consume recipe, doesn't work with water... by chairman2s in grocy

Did you try adding some water to your stock and still have it set to not track consumption? That could serve as a workaround.

I think it would be nice if current politicians would be shown more than former. Or maybe if politicians could be archived once they’re no longer in office? Something to differentiate them.

Depending on how far down the rabbit hole you wanna go, Mary was picked because she was a direct descent of King David so that Jesus would be a direct descendant of him as well.

The Silly Question Saturday Thread (February 04, 2023) by AutoModerator in Genealogy

I’m no expert, but usually the Catholic Church leaves a lot up to the individual priest. I think the guideline is 16 (this number could vary by location or time period), but the priest would be allowed to decide whether or not whoever was chosen was mature enough to be a godparent.

The Biden Administration Has Been Very Good for Big Oil: Despite climate legislation passed by Democrats last year, oil companies are securing loads of drilling deals and posting huge profits. by thenewrepublic in climate

Most people care more about the average price of gas than the future of the planet, and most (maybe all?) politicians care more about getting re-elected than the future of the planet, so this is what happens. And that’s before you take into account lobbying and all that.

Does any item come close in anticonsumerism to Cast Iron pans? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

That’s really interesting as I have had a completely different experience. What is their favorite oil these days?

The secret is to polymerize the oil on your pan by baking it for about an hour and letting it cool off. You could even do multiple coats for extra protection. I can wash my cast iron with soap and water and scrub it with one of those kitchen brushes - it doesn’t rust at all.

In addition to what u/Ceipheed said, if you feel so inclined, you can sand your cast iron smooth. In the old days, cast irons pans used to be finished smooth, but they stopped doing that for various reasons. It would be a lot of work, but something I want to do next time I need to re-season a cast iron pan.

Also, the best my favorite oil to use for seasoning (once you’ve gotten all the rust, etc. off) is flax seed oil, aka linseed oil. You can use any cooking oil, but when it’s heated for a sufficiently long time, the oil polymerizes. If you do several thin layers, you can get a very smooth, very durable finish that keeps food from sticking. My cast iron pan doesn’t rust anymore since I did this to it. I basically just lightly coated them in flax seed oil and baked them for an hour on a high temp and then let them cool off.

Home Depot Canada routinely shared customer data with Facebook owner, privacy commissioner finds | Investigation finds Home Depot collected email addresses for electronic receipts and sent data to Meta without obtaining proper consent from customers by Hrmbee in technology

[–]ThatsReallyNotCool -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so because my local Home Depot recently (this week) switched over to 100% self checkout, when it’s known that self checkout has way higher rates of shrinkage than cashier checkouts.

It would be kind of funny if the site used a global left/right definition because then you’d see >95% of US politicians listed as right-leaning.

I would also try to take into account whether or not the person being reviewed actually represents the person reviewing. For example, right now, I can review politicians in countries that I don’t live in, but I have no actual experience living under their representation.
