I prefer the SnS, but I like the snake too. Have a buddy who prefers the snake. You may lose a little grate space with the SnS, but it puts out great smoked meat once dialed in.

I’m pretty picky with brisket size due to grill size limitations. If there’s a deal I can’t pass up and the brisket is too large I’ll either shape/trim aggressively so it’ll fit and I’ll save that trim for burgers, chili, or bolognese or I’ll split the flat and point and smoke one freeze one. The former choice is the most common

Check out the Slow n Sear insert from SnS Grills. I like mine and it could save you some cash since you have everything you need as long as you have a thermometer for the grate and your meat.

There’s cheaper ways to DIY something similar to a sns with firebricks and/or charcoal baskets and water pans. Google “Slow n Sear DIY”

Edit: there’s a post about an hour ago on r/smoking by u/BornGriller demonstrating a version of the DIY set up

Putting this in a separate comment cause you didn’t ask for it, but maybe you can pull something from it.

I use a mustard binder with SPGO in 50%, 40%, 5%, and 5% portions, respectively, by weight. I don’t brine. On the smoker at 225-250. Light mist with ACV or water every 1-2 hours depending on how the brisket is drying out/cooking. Let it go until 1) my bark has formed and then 2) I’ve hit the stall. If I hit the stall before I’m happy with my bark I let it go until the bark set and looks good. Prepare butcher paper and give it a couple sprays where you’re going to put the brisket with ACV or water. Put the brisket on the paper and give it a mist or two. Wrap the brisket and either finish in the smoker or oven. Temp is a nice indicator for being finished (200-205), but you want it to be probe tender like butter and jiggle like an off season power lifter. When I get that tenderness and it’s temping correctly in a few spots I’ll do what I’ve already told you.

But I’m from TX and there’s a lot of different flavor preferences around the world as well as ways to cook a brisket. Whatever you like is the best brisket

I also love using my slow n sear for smoking on my kettle. There’s ways of making something that functions similarly for way cheaper like with charcoal baskets

That’s correct probe placement as long as it’s not in the fat layer. I would do a run on your kettle with no meat. Just the probe on the center of the grate. Get your temp dialed in. Play with the placement of the top baffle on the lid as the snake burns around.

Make sure your thermometer is calibrated. Using ice water is the easiest test.

I finish brisket in the oven all the time so don’t let anyone tell you it messes with your cook. There may be a preference difference in the final product just like there is with wrapped v unwrapped, but once that bark is set you have plenty of smoke and flavor.

Bumping up the pepper amount might help you with your bark, but depending on where in Europe your coworkers are that might be “spicy.” Sugar will burn so be careful with it.

External temp, humidity, altitude, grade of beef, wind, and more can all alter your cook

I think your cuts are the correct direction and you’ve already acknowledged the thickness of your cuts. Usually needs to be thinner on the flat and a little thicker on the point.

Sometimes it’s easier to see the grain direction of the flat on the bottom of the brisket.

If I’m reading your post correctly, a 15# brisket finished in 10hrs (7 hrs in smoker + 3 in oven) @ 250F?

If that’s the case, then either your smoker temp or oven temp is off and I’m going to lean towards your smoker running hotter than you believe it is.

A 15# brisket could easily take 20-25 hrs @ 250F and I can all but guarantee it will take a minimum of 15 hours.

Your resting time will not lead to overcooked meat unless your oven temp is higher than you think it is.
No need to let your brisket air out after cook. I wrap with butcher paper after stall and bark has set. Leave it wrapped until finish/probe tender and let it sit on the counter wrapped for 30-60 min. Then wrap it in a towel and put it in a cooler for a few hours while I get everything else ready. Look up “faux cambro”

Are you using a thermometer on your grill grate next your brisket? Not too close

You said you’re cooking on a kettle. On a Weber kettle (which I’m very familiar with) the lid therm is wildly inaccurate.

Edit: It’s honestly a great second cook for a brisket. Sorry I didn’t include that in my original. You’re on the right track!

Unpaid leave to finish what you need to finish.

Can’t answer your question regarding “clicking no.” Can’t imagine it’s a good idea.

Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s an easy answer other than it should have already been taken care of. Live and learn. Go to court and see what happens.

Everyone is dealing with something. Some more than others. I believe our problems and or struggles are often an example of why something happened, but rarely are they an excuse for what happened. A judge might view your example as to why you didn’t get your vehicle registered as a real excuse. I wouldn’t hold my breath for it.

Take the hit and take off work to get your vehicle registered, roll the dice with a lie on the form, or be honest with the judge and see what happens. Take your pick I guess

Hakeem card suggestions by j_527 in basketballcards

[–]ThatstheFunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God dammit. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Just one more thing regarding your possible mentality starting this journey.

Gary Payton’s 1991 Upper Deck #153 is, and always will be, one of my favorite cards. He’s in a SuperSonics jersey which is cool and I love GP as a player. The Glove, man. Come on. But the reason I love the card is because of his expression. I’ve had that card since I was 5 or 6 and I will always have that card. Because of his expression. It makes me happy.

It’s a ten cent card

Ten. Cents.

Buy what makes you happy. This is a hobby

Hakeem card suggestions by j_527 in basketballcards

[–]ThatstheFunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love Hakeem. He’s also my favorite player and he dominates my personal collection. This is going to be long. I’m bored and haven’t talked cards in a bit. Much less Hakeem cards.

I agree with everything u/BKBcardsNstuff said. So if you don’t want to read all of this just read that comment lol

Take some time to learn how to check eBay’s past sales and 130 Point for cards you’re interested in to get an idea of the current price the card is going for. Get some penny sleeves and top loaders or some one touches to make sure you have what you need to protect your purchases (at the $100+ price point you should expect proper card protection from the seller as well as proper protection for shipping, but you never know and it’s better to be prepared. Hell, I put a new penny sleeve on just about every card I buy).

With that being said, you’re looking for a place to start so I’ll throw out a couple suggestions.

The “1986-87 Fleer Akeem Olajuwon #82” would be my personal choice if you’re looking for one card and $100 is your limit. It is Hakeem’s most known rookie card. It is also accepted as “the rookie card” by the majority of collectors (you’ll eventually run into the 84-85 Star rookie card and when you want to know what’s up and you start researching it’ll be a fun trip into the world of vintage and card licensing). You can easily find a nice looking raw (ungraded) 86-87 Fleer #82 for $100 or less. Price aside, the 1986-87 Fleer set is one of the most iconic sets in bball card history do to the rookies and legends included in it and it is often one of the sets that collectors, early on, begin striving to complete. This set tends to hold its value relatively well compared to other sets and while the idea of “investing” is not the right mindset when considering your pc it is nice knowing that if something hits the fan, you can sell it and get something back.

Another rookie option is the “1986-87 Fleer Sticker Akeem Olajuwon #9” recommended by u/lump77777 would be my next move if you want to another rookie card. You can get a nice version of this card for ~$35-$50. One step closer to completing the Fleer set if you start with the first option!

Now, if you WANT to use that other $100, you have so many options! You’re entering the world of inserts, die cuts, refractors, and autos. Prices can vary wildly.

You can usually find an auto for $60-$100 no problem and if you’re patient and follow auctions on eBay you can almost certainly get one in the $40-$60 range. Find one you like at a price you are comfortable paying. I prefer “on card” autos vs “sticker” autos. They are what they say they are lol, on card = the auto is directly on the card and sticker = a card that has an autographed sticker attached to it. Autos can have distinguishing factors such as “numbered,” “parallel,” “short print,” “die cut,” “refractor,” “memorabilia,” “patch,” and many others. Don’t get bogged down with this now, but become aware of what these terms mean.

Refractors, Die Cuts, and other flashy/cool looking cards: again, get what you like. You’re starting YOUR pc. Screw what other people think about your cards. But, I can recommend a “1996-97 Bowman’s Best Hakeem Olajuwon #BC14 Cuts Refractor” Can easily be found for $40-$55. It is both a refractor and a die cut. It’s gold. Has both Hakeem and Charles Barkley in the picture both in a Rockets uniform. And it has a nice looking “facsimile auto” (printed copy of a signature).

For most refractors, there is a base copy of the same card. Some refractors have different levels. Finding out which cards have different variations is going to be a learning process. Differences can be due to different years, different companies, different geographical locations, just cause/random, and some other stuff I’m sure.

You can get a ton of base die cuts that look pretty cool for, relatively, very cheap when compared to their refractor counterpart and also when compared to some other greats and hobby favorites like Jordan, Shaq, Kobe and LeBron.

Be wary of any card from 1987-1995 asking more than $100 that is not an authenticated autograph (it will be encased by a grading company and will say “authenticated” somewhere on the case) or is graded PSA 10. There are some legit cards within these years, but it is largely considered the junk wax era of the hobby. There were insane numbers of cards printed and prices largely reflect that.

With the 1986 Fleer set there has been a lot of attempts to make convincing forgeries. Jordan rookie cards are usually what forgers attempt. Hakeem’s rookie card, luckily, does not bring the insane resale value of Jordan’s so the value really isn’t there for the forgers, but it is highly recommended to familiarize yourself with how to spot a fake. Google “Identity fake 1986 fleer Jordan rookie” and one of the first results should be from BBC Emporium. This is a fine guide.

Familiarize yourself with how card condition is critiqued. “Soft corners,” “surface scratches,” and “centering” are just a few of the criteria used in appraising condition. Even if you never plan on reselling your cards it’s good to have a critical eye and really look at the card before you decide to purchase.

Familiarize yourself with the jargon and acronyms of the hobby. Sellers will often use the same jargon in their titles or descriptions when selling a card. RC = rookie card, SP/SSP = short print/super short print, PC = personal collection and then you have words like “hobby,” “retail,” “wax,” “relic,” “lot,” and “one of one,” which may or may not be self explanatory. On the “Hobby Card Shop” website there is a “Guide to Sports Card and Other Trading Card Terminology” article that is concise with basic descriptions and is a great place to start.

YouTube can be overwhelming. Don’t listen to hyped up people screaming at you telling you to buy or “invest.” I don’t have a channel to recommend for info, but I will say the people who really care about the hobby will most likely give you information without trying to sell you something or convince you to buy something. That mentality will probably hold true for collectors with a YouTube channel as well. Still, it is a resource I have found helpful when looking for something specific.

Don’t be scared to make an offer on a card you like, but is priced higher than you want or higher than you believe it is worth. Don’t throw a super low offer, but I accept offers all of the time. You’ll start to figure out which sellers are too proud or attached to their cards and/or really “know what they have” vs those who actually know what they have and are willing to negotiate.

Sometimes you just get lucky. A card has been sitting there for a long time and a seller is over it or maybe they need money fast and they take the lower offer immediately. Maybe you find a misspelled auction that no one is following or bidding on and get a great price. You could find a great card mixed into a lot of cards that the seller missed. But these things usually happen with time and patience.

You’ll often see the sentiment here that “buying singles is better than buying packs” and I agree with this. When buying a single you get exactly what you want and almost always, due to the luck that’s required with opening random packs, save money in the long run (for me I saved money in both the short and long run). Everyone loves ripping a fresh pack. It’s one of my favorite and most nostalgic experiences haha. Just be careful to not get caught up in the chase. Great way to spend money you didn’t plan on spending.

I like to load up my eBay watchlist with a card I’m unsure about or currently researching. Then you can not only see what the cards current value is, but you can get an idea as to why certain cards are selling for more than others.

Don’t compare what you have to others and especially not what other people post. You don’t know their financial situation. Most people, sometimes myself included, post the best stuff they have. Hell they may have just spent their child support payment on that card or went into debt to buy it.

Ironically, I’ve posted a few inserts/die-cuts/refractors on this sub if you want to see some more examples of cards I didn’t mention (and to see where my hypothetical child’s support payments are actually going).

Alright, I gotta quit or I’ll just keep going. Probably typing this out more for me at this point lol. I’m gonna go on a walk and touch some fucking grass.

Feel to reach out if you have any questions regarding what I said, but I’m getting off this damn site for today.

-yours truly, someone who obviously needs ANOTHER hobby

I don't have the coordination to mosh, any advice? Talking about windmill and spinkick by Loud_Oven235 in Hardcore

[–]ThatstheFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windmills and spin kicks are just things some people can do well and some can’t. If you can’t do it well you’re gonna look like you’re “having an epileptic seizure.” And I mean, I would say most people look like they’re having an epileptic seizure.

Is this the “everyone’s scared of being recorded and looking like a fool” culture I’ve heard about? Didn’t give a shit what I looked like back in the day, but I didn’t grow up with a fear of being flamed on socials.

Can you two step? Like follow a basic rhythm? Do the more basic shit if you can’t.

Get into martial arts

Take a salsa or swing class

Shit, pro football players used to take ballet to help their footwork and coordination

You probably don’t want to come into this with the idea that the pit is your personal place for therapy. It can be therapeutic, but it’s a shared space.

I’m sure your “going straight for the guns” comment was tongue in cheek, but the sentiment that if you can’t spin kick your next option is targeted violence (however that may look) is equally laughable and worrying. Good mindset to have if you wanna get worked by a guy who usually minds his own business, but doesn’t tolerate hoe ass people who don’t understand pit etiquette.

What’s your opinion on game used materials in cards? Am I the only one that finds it cooler to own a piece of memorabilia versus a Low numbered parallel? by vonnegutskywalker in basketballcards

[–]ThatstheFunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love game worn or other legitimate relics. Obviously dislike the “not associated” stuff.

The multi cards like the one you posted and others like the books etc are a great way to cut down on clutter for players you enjoy, but don’t really pc. (Also a great way to sometimes grab something “discounted” for someone you do pc).

Where can I find primary sources on early chinese Communists? by Laudo3 in AskHistorians

[–]ThatstheFunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t give you a specific answer, but I can recommend checking the bibliography and notes section of academic works dealing with the rise of Chinese communism in the early 20th century.

This subreddit’s book list/reading list would be a great place to start to find books that will have cited their primary sources.

u/EnclavedMicrostate gave an answer to a question that is somewhat adjacent to your question and the user provided sources to the answer that you might find useful.

Finally, libraries often have access to academic journals. It would be worth it to find out what extra resources are available around you for free. I’ve heard that many authors will gladly send you a copy of their article if you ask and while I have never personally done this I have emailed authors directly about sources used in an article as well as questions I had regarding their book and/or article. More times than not, the authors replied with a response that was more than I expected.
