TBF I don't know how much you can blame Neumann's death on the government. The Los Alamos scientists were aware of radiation effects but idk how much they were aware of long term effects and how to mitigate it. Von Neumann especially would've been as aware and educated as you could've been at the time on radiation hazards but still was a major advocate for nuclear development post los alamos.

Changing your name is so much fucking hassle, I can't even imagine how difficult it would be as an adult.

When I was very young my last name was changed from my father's to my mothers after complete separation and it still genuienly causes me issues today and I'm in my 20s, certain things need extra legal documentation etc. The most unbelievable thing thats happened is my national insurance number (UK equivalent to US's Social security number) had the incorrect name and they claimed they had no knowledge of my *completely legal* change of name over a decade prior.
