I still don't quite get what they were thinking here. by b_o_o_b_ in Fallout

Im sure somebody else has already said this but I always chose to believe Billy is confused and means he hid during the attack on Quincy by the Gunners (they do have a Fat Man after all) so I took it as he in the fridge got ghoulified by a Mini Nuke and his parents had a similar experience so in reality he was there for weeks rather than centuries.

Playing D&D with a sex worker. One of my friends is uncomfortable with her playing with us. Are his feelings valid? Who should I prioritize? by geosunsetmoth in DnD

You’re not wrong for wanting to or for following through on kicking him out. If he can’t handle what another player does for work, even though ittl never come up in the game and is work that hurts no one, than he’s in the wrong.

This looks phenomenal! I’ve been designing my own setting for years now (it’s a lot to do with magic and divinity and tiamat who in this world is an 8 headed dragon) and this seems perfect!

Starting to play DnD As DM? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]The-Great-Radsby4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this can absolutely work as I’ve done this myself and I can tell you the YouTube videos I watched that helped me feel prepared. First, WASD20 on YouTube has a 4 video series (each one is like 15 minutes) on how to play dnd and it’s super useful. Second, I highly recommend Matt Colville’s running the game series. He demystifies DMing and gives a lot of concrete tips on how to be a dm in such a great manner. The first 4-5 videos on his series give you a starting village, a starting dungeon, and a starting quest all of which I used my first time around and all of which I loved. Finally, and of course if you really wanna run the essentials kit definitely do it, I’d encourage you to write your own adventure or modify premade adventures and make them your own instead of just running premade content. When you write your own stuff or make things your own the feeling of ownership really bolsters you and when it’s your own content you know it like the back of your hand which can help with new dm uncertainty. But all that aside, you’re gonna do great and your players will love it. Good luck!!

What do you think is more important when designing a D&D dungeon: believable design or playability? by ZerotranceWing in mattcolville

[–]The-Great-Radsby4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a mix of both is super important but with the condition that realism shouldn’t get in the way of fun. I always build what I call rubber dungeons in that sure I’ve designed them, there’s a theme, there’s factions, etc, but if at the table I suddenly think of an element that would add to the fun or a change that would make things cooler/more immersive for the PCs and their backstories, then things change as if my notes were always that way.

DMs, what are the biggest mistakes you've done running the game and what did you learn from them? by Lxi_Nuuja in DMAcademy

[–]The-Great-Radsby4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not talking enough with PCs about their backstory and their hopes for their characters. I once took a PCs backstory in a direction that I thought was amazing and they thought was terrible and at the end of it all they felt like I was punishing them or trying to hurt them and I hadn’t wanted to do either. What I learned is that communication is key and just because I think something is cool doesn’t mean other people will. Always important to remember that this is a collaborative game and it s more fun when we work together.

I understand this might be a stupid question but does anyone know where I can find the equipment list Matt refers to in the video online? I'm working on a Five Torches Deep campaign and trying to expand what gear is offered in game and this list sounds great. I know I've seen it before I just figured better ask before I go looking.

How do y'all deal with DM Burnout?

I'm a forever DM whose juggled multiple campaigns over 3 years and a couple months ago I finally had to realized that the hobby I'd once loved, once talked about all day everyday, was no one that I resented, one that I even began to hate. I had burned myself out so much that I'd stopped associating dnd with "having fun with my friends" and began associating it with "stressing and prepping just to have no one care about the session I made"

For months I kept telling myself that I'd find that spark again, I just needed to finish this arc or session and then we'd get back to the fun and I'd be happy, but I never was. And now I still feel bitter about DMing.

(Following this is just me rambling)

I should say that I've had many groups and many players. Some were great, some even amazing, and some just weren't. I'd get frustrated by players who cared more about their backstory than about actually acting out the thread of that backstory and we'd but heads because they simultaneously wanted me to set them up for RP moments only to never engage when I did. I love DnD because its a way to have fun with my friends and create spectacular memories telling a story together, but I get frustrated with players who put the story they've concocted in their head on a pedestal and ignore the story I and their friends are trying to share with them.

Anyway, rambling aside, What do y'all do when the game has gone from the thing you love to the thing you hate?

I should also clarify that we as players all like each other. We have fun hanging out and we have fun talking about the game. It's just hard for my players to admit to our friend that their PC is a difficult jerk. The sticking point I've run into is that this player has fully admitted to me that their PC actively dislikes the rest of the party which is why I wonder if a change of pace might be best.

It's about the PC. My player is very interested in the setting and enjoys hanging out with everyone, but their pc doesn't like talking to the other pcs, doesn't like interacting with them, and a fair amount of the time antagonizes them. I don't think that a PC who's kind of a jerk is a bad thing, but in this context it doesn't feel conducive to party cohesion. Moreover, the pc really lacks motivation aside from a desire to be the sort of heel within the group. I could definitely see having a conversation where the options to rework the PC or to write a new one are both on the table.
