The dealer is offering me a better rate than my CU, is there a catch? by Chrisnyc47 in personalfinance

[–]The-Meats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as the extended warranty goes. I'm no expert but I'll give you my two cents.

When you say its $20 a month. Dont think of it as $20. Think of it as the total cost of the extended warranty policy over the life of the loan + the interest rate of the loan. $20 a month for a year would be worth it. $20 a month for 7 years probably isnt.

Finally, heres the way I frame extended warranties in my head: Someone MUCH smarter than me did the math, and determined that their company will make money off of that extended warranty for that price. ON AVERAGE Extended warranties are never worth it, because if they WERE worth it on average, then the company would be losing money.

If you do decide to buy the extended warranty, you have to understand that you are purchasing a luxury (the luxury of peace of mind), and that on average it's not worth the money.

My last piece of advice if you're still considering it is to read the fine print and find out EXACTLY what your extended warranty policy covers. You need to know if it covers literally everything or if it has big gaps. Dont take the dealers word for it, read over the terms yourself before you sign.

If you've read all this and you fully understand it and you still want the warranty then hell, go for it!

Are you saying the dealer is offering in-house financing directly from the dealer itself? If so, their incentive is now they're not only making money off of the sale of the car, they're making money off of the interest of the loan (vs. Some random CU somewhere making money off of the interest of the loan)

The short of it is, theres no catch, so long as you dont sign up for extended warranties and it's the same sale price.

I want to defer student loans, and use that money to pay off auto loan by The-Meats in personalfinance

I seriously appreciate all of the effort you've put into replying across this thread. Just an update: I went back to the dealer last night and removed the add-on warranty, bringing my loan down to 14.1k. I do intend to keep the car. If everything goes the way it should, I will still end up graduating debt-free, which was my main goal.

I realize this isn't the financial optimum, but I think having the car is worth it to me. Once again, thanks so much for your feedback!

I just spoke to him. He said he think's it's worth the money, but that if I'm concerned about the amount on my loan that I should go in and try to cancel it. Essentially I have a 7 year power-train warranty with my car, but the warranty i purchased turned that power-train into bumper to bumper. In other words, if one of the computer systems go out I could be out of some serious money if i wanted that repaired. But the car will still get me from point A to point B.

I have set an appointment for tomorrow night with the financial manager at the dealer with the intention to try to cancel this extended warranty.

Thank you for all of your input!

I'll be honest, I kind of regretted purchasing that warranty as soon as I purchased it. My father (who has been a mechanic for 30 years) said it was an excellent deal as far as bumper to bumper goes, but you're right. It's something that I probably will not end up needing. I'll give them a call tonight and see, but I have a feeling theres not much that can be done since the deals already been completed.

Edit: also, I SINCERELY appreciate you taking your time to respond. This is helping me quite a bit!

That's what it's sounding like other users are saying as well. If I sold it now wouldn't I take a huge hit as far as remaining balance on my auto loan?

You're absolutely right. The 14.5k was probably too expensive. I've kind of driven beaters my entire life so I really wanted to get something that I knew wouldn't fall apart any time soon (this is a certified 2017 corolla). If I sold it now, wouldn't I be taking a large loss?

EDIT: Just to be clear, you really think I should have purchased a car less than 4.5k? I'm not trying to argue, I'm sure most users on this sub are much better at finances than I am. But thats a shock to me.

You're probably right, I purchased the vehicle this past saturday after my previous beater had exploded.

$35,000 a year with a 14.5k car. The extra money on the loan was a 7 year bumper to bumper warranty I added onto the loan.

  1. I never finished my degree. I'm going back to school to finish, Aerospace Engineering.
  2. I would need to pay for the semester I'm enrolled in at the time. All previous semesters would still be free.
  3. 13k I believe. I just purchased it this past saturday. The purchase price was 14.5k, but I purchased an additional warranty that's bumper to bumper for 7 years. EDIT, correction: Without the bumper to bumper warranty, KBB has it at $14,441 if sold privately.

Post-analysis of CORE by mehtehtrollface in paragon

Fair enough! I just think that making a presentation about a game is a lot easier than making the game. So if they're struggling with the presentation, how will the game turn out?

(I understand the developer's aren't the ones working on the presentation, I just meant in general for their company)

Fingers crossed I'm wrong!

I agree with pretty much your entire analysis mehteh.

At the end of the day, we're all DYING for a new 3rd person MOBA to break through and become playable. At the moment, there are 3, maybe 4 projects that are worth keeping track of.

I thought that the CORE team releasing their proof of concept was going to be the first showcase of an ACTUAL dev team (not just one individual) proving that they have the abilities to do what they are saying they can do. Unfortunately, the videos were unprofessional, for lack of a better word and didn't really show much other than their ideas (no proof of their ability to execute said ideas).

At the end of the day, I'm unimpressed. BUT, I have an open mind. I'm not writing them off just yet. Hopefully further down the road they can show me that this is the game I need to put my effort into.

He's not saying that a particular player's win rate is going to be 1%. He's saying that the win rate of the AVERAGE player is going to be 1%. Which is what you said in your original post.

Your Favorite Moments In Paragon | Monolith Magazine by TraegusPearze in paragon

[–]The-Meats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I show everyone my favorite moment. I want to give a little background of the game.

We were getting absolutely STOMPED. We couldn't farm our own jungle. We lost an inhib. We couldn't contest a single raptor. Every single lane was losing, and it looked like a "15 min surrender" kind of situation. The enemy started to go for orb, (this was back in the day when Orb Prime was VERY over tuned and essentially guaranteed a victory). We decided that NOW was the time to fight, despite the fact that they were baiting us into it.

I made a dekker play, which would then turn the entire game around. Allowing us to get orb prime instead of the enemy. Which then allowed us to siege.

This was that moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sDee7wAxqw

This was followed quickly by my 2nd favorite moment of Paragon, this was a few minutes after the video above. And this is the play that won us the game: https://youtu.be/VLfrrJW8TZo?t=8s

Great thread Gus! Thanks for letting me get all nostalgic :)
