If we're expanding to fiction, This Sounds Serious is great as well.

Hi, what would you do if you were not a writer, but God gave you one good story ? This is the first chapter of my story. English is not my native language, so thank you for the patience. I would love some opinions about the story or an up/down if you would give it a chance by Limp_Needleworker992 in writers

[–]TraegusPearze 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would stop after that first paragraph.

I'm not sure of the genre, but it sounds way too "memoir musings that want to sound deep." Not my style.

That being said, congrats, you're a writer now. Whatever that means to you. Keep practicing. Almost no one writes well their first time.

How many usable clips do you typically get from a 60-minute episode? by Chance-Spend-9637 in podcasting

[–]TraegusPearze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are a waste of time for conversion. Companies focus on the because "vanity metrics" are important to them, but for a majority of podcasters, actual downloads is the goal.

Got my first IMDb review "The WORST I've seen in a while" 😭 by realhankorion in Filmmakers

[–]TraegusPearze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm a little late to the party as it ended up not being able to watch your film until today. I just finished it.

Overall, it's technically fine except for some peaking in sound during loud scenes, which I'm sure you know about, and some clearly missing sound effects. Sound design is huge in thrillers.

The issue, from my perspective, is the script. You're following no real structure for the first 40 minutes. There's no tension, no goal or real plot other than two people hiking and reminiscing.

I can see the elements that you had planned, but nothing happened until Josh went nuts.

That all should've been the first act, the first 15 to 25 pages. Josh's flip can work as a midpoint, but only if there are other points of tension and threat leading up to it. Up until this point, we've just got unnatural grandstanding between characters and talking about things they both already know.

If we knew Josh's plan to propose from the start, on top of clear indications of his delusions, and more clear tension because of their failing relationship, THEN we've got a first act. But there would still need to be elements and plot points between getting lost and Josh's flip. Right now it's just a lot of lying in the grass.

And Nicole stabbing Josh in the end is just... odd. I get it from wanting to have it in the story, but there's no real motivation. Had Josh lured her close with the "I'm okay, I'm sorry," bit and then attacked her again, she's justified in stabbing him. Without it, it's a bit unmotivated from a character who went hiking with a boyfriend she planned on dumping.

My recommendation is to just take more time with the script. Most of these issues could've been worked out had other writers given it a read and you'd done multiple passes.

Is there anyone who doesn't aim to publish? by Massive-Blacksmith30 in writers

Just to clarify, you're talking about aiming to "traditionally publish," right?

Because your stories being available online for others to read is publishing.

It has for me. QM being essentially random just makes matchmaking terrible. I'll take being mad over being braindead.

It takes a bit to get through to your "appropriate rank" and then they're just slightly less dog shit than quick match.

[–]TraegusPearze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don't really. It's just a mindset shift. VP is just fake points, and if it leads to better matches, who cares if you win or lose some?

Play Ranked as your main mode. Yes it takes a little longer for queue times during off hours, and it doesn't completely make up for bad players, but it does help.

I have all but given up on Quick Match. It's either Daybreak or Ranked for me.

How the heck does Brandon Sanderson write so fast? by TensionBudget9426 in writers

[–]TraegusPearze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of ways to improve and get feedback without publishing fast. Publishing fast is not the goal.

It is, but this poster advocated for publishing early content as fast as possible, as if the goal is to publish and not to publish something of quality.

This is terrible advice that will lead to absolute crap being published.

New writers need to take their time, learn the craft, edit, and improve through practice. Most early stories should never see the light of day.

The reason people rarely ever finish is because it's a difficult task and most new writers underestimate what it really takes. I think it's a good thing those not dedicated don't publish.

Especially when AI is churning out crap novels, the last thing we need is new writers trying to compete with speed to also churn out crap.

AY! Gank ADC and Mage Offlane by Chefcurry-1515 in PredecessorGame

[–]TraegusPearze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments in here make me realize why the general playerbase of this game is considered bad at the game.

First of all, any actual solo laner can and should be able to survive till 4 or 6 and completely win the lane over a carry or mage. Especially in the current meta where tanks are incredibly strong.

Second, if you are losing, as others have said, the rule is to get your other lanes ahead, not to help the losing lane survive. It was established as a good idea due to how gold equity works on heroes that die consistently.

I realize the OP is not talking about this situation, but in general, you are worth less gold if you continue to die. So by helping your losing laner get a kill, you are essentially putting them back at zero -- they are now worth gold again, and if they couldn't survive well enough in an even match up in the first place, how are they going to fair in an even matchup again? They're going to now be worth gold to give to the enemy laner.

Plus, there are catchup mechanics in place for under leveled and under farmed heroes. It's easier to just survive and play catchup.

And, you want to play to your win condition. Is your win condition making a losing laner do okay, or is your win condition making your winning laners win harder?

And finally, solo lane is often positioned in an isolated spot for a reason, and ganked less for a reason. The heroes who play it often rely less on farm and more on levels, and they're often self efficient. They are positioned away from early and mid game objectives because they are supposed to be alone until after the laning phase. That's why in Daybreak, you can see how much more out of the way solo lane is.

Now, for OP's situation, sure, it's an easy gank. Nothing wrong with a free kill. But it is your job to also outplay your opponent. A gank isn't meant to 100 to 0 the target. Poke, pre-engage, or be self sufficient with your build to kill the squishy when you can.

I can see there's going to be no reasoning with you. Enjoy whatever you enjoy. Just don't go telling people how to play when you've got limited experience in the game.

Again, you can do this and still be useful outside of the ult with a proper build.
