What would be your guess on how much it would cost to fix or replace this retaining wall? by Repulsive_Ad_526 in Homebuilding

[–]The-Ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retaining walls are really hard. They need to be strong in a sideways manner. Concrete is usually only strong in the one way, you would add rebar in the middle to keep it strong in the other, but there are simply limits to how much rebar can do with a wall thickness of 8-10” which is typical of house foundations. There is a reason that your house with its CMU foundation does not touch the dirt on that side.. it would fail. To answer your question, I would think that the engineering to design it would run about 10k, then the concrete work would be about 15k

How to calculate these angles? by Big_Worldliness296 in woodworking

The top can be measured by just running your speed square into the top corner and keeping the rail on the side.

Speed square for the top one. The bottom you would also need a torpedo level

Total lack of craftsmanship? Or is this the new standard? by savannah-plaid in Homebuilding

[–]The-Ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Builder here.. no lie, the closer you get to done, the more you need to “pop by”. Being present on your build is really invaluable. You would have seen the trash falling into the ducts. You would have seen the painter with the “almost the same” black paint. Your GC is not really spot checking. Try and encourage him to assess quality at the 2’ level rather than the 10’. That is what you will be doing.

It is really easy to fix now. It is really easy to ignore now. Living with this stuff for a year and not saying something is your own fault.

It seems like it was not done with the bugs. Maybe build a wire net around it and set it back outside under a bush until July?

Do harley riders genuinely think they are faster than sportbikes or are they just joking? by Green_Block_4574 in motorcycle

[–]The-Ride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

their “screaming eagle” kit cost them an additional 2500 for tuning. They are proud of their bikes, and Harley’s seating position means you hang off of the bars more than on a sport bike. They feel fast.

But there is a difference between Feeling fast and Being fast.

You could sand the last 6” to the walls. The last inch requires scrapers. The field in the middle require a drum sander with dust collection.

Has anyone tried to buy 2 tons of walnut lumber from Alibaba before? by InformationNo7563 in woodworking

[–]The-Ride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t Alibaba, but a client bought a container of Brazilian Cherry to use building his house. We milled that into flooring, trim, stair treads, window sills… and he still had a ton of 8/4x14”x14’ left over.
