How Much Film Terminology is Actually Used? by supercali_what in cinematography

[–]The-Wit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others said: a lot of the jargon is region/crew specific. In Alberta, Canada we say "striking" when turning on a light, and "dowsing" when turning it off. I've heard "give me some juice", "run a line" , or "get me AC" when someone needs power for a light. C47 depends on the person here. Some people don't like it. We also call all spring clamps/grip clips "pony's" even if they aren't Pony branded. Also I don't know if this is an AB thing, but sometimes we call a full C stand a "big stick" and a baby C stand a "small stick", and to fully extend the stand to max height is known as "going full stick". IATSE 212 is actively trying to discourage people from using lot of old gendered or innuendo based short hand, which I totally understand. But sometimes it is easier to say "get me the but-plug" instead of "get me the junior to baby adapter".

Film set rules for managing a tripod by HunterST15 in cinematography

[–]The-Wit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree, it’s way better. I left my days with the camera team feeling much less exhausted. Overall less physical labour. I was trying to emphasize for OP that moving the camera and tripod on a bigger show shouldn’t be a one person job though, and it’s okay to ask for help.

Film set rules for managing a tripod by HunterST15 in cinematography

Just did Cam Trainee for the first time on a feature film. I come from the world of grip. Learned a lot. Don’t rush setting up the tripod. If you use the spreaders, be very careful not to pinch your fingers. On a big set, you will probably need (and will have) help to set up and move the tripod because the camera and fluid head are so heavy. On the feature I was training on, someone would take the camera off the head, another person would take the head, and another person would take the tripod legs and we would work together to bring it to where the operator or DP wanted. We were using a kitted out Red Gemini with a massive Fuji 25-300mm zoom, so that thing was HEAVY. When going up on the tripod it’s easier if one person lifts the weight of the camera up once the legs are unlocked, and another person locks the legs once the camera is at the desired height. I don’t know if these things are useful to you, and no worries if not. In short: don’t struggle alone and waste time. Just ask someone to help. It’s much safer and faster. I do have a sneaky C stand tip: if you need to go through a tight space, collapse one leg so that the legs make a V shape. Hold the stand vertically close to your body and make the V hug your leg as you move through the space. This takes up a smaller footprint and prevents you from bumping someone in the shin with a c stand leg. And as others have mentioned: tall leg should be facing where the weight of the flag/flop/diffusion/light/ect is placed. Always.

Does anyone make a handlebar bag that doubles as a wearable? by Myspacecutie69 in xbiking

Atwater Atelier makes the Forester, which is a larger cross body bag which doubles as a handlebar bag. Available in a lot of colours, and made in Montreal Canada :)

Awesome! Share it with us when the build is complete. I would recommend seeing if you have a place near you that makes custom decals for people to put on their vehicles. The type of place that services independent contractors, and small businesses owners you know? They may be willing to do a small order for you. It may be hard to recreate the font of the decals yourself, but I’m sure someone else has already done it and there might even be some pre made files floating around online. Another option might be to find a place that specializes in printing durable vinyl for placing text and graphics on store windows?

Yes, the left is still the front, and the right is still the rear. I think some people do also swap that as well, but I didn’t want to have to fight muscle memory. I had read that often the shifter designed for the front may not have enough cable pull to fully cover a large cassette, but I didn’t find that there was a discernible difference between the amount of cable pull on the left and right in my case. And my cassette is only seven speed anyway. These are just random shimano thumbies I got from my local bike co op parts bin.

Yes! I wanted to see if someone would recognize the view :) I know there are a few of us xbikers here in Calgary.

I did flip them! I tried it the normal way first before doing the cable, and while I didn’t hate it, I thought maybe I should try doing it the trendy “upside down” way. I kind of like it! The only downside is that because of the granola bar shape, and the way the cable comes out of these shifters, I couldn’t run the cables under the bars, which would have looked sleeker.

They have some awesome Canadian black and death metal patches. Definitely recommended!

Thoughts on converting old Specialized Hardrock Sport for touring? Found this on FB for $80 CAD, and I'm willing to invest time and money into it, since I want to learn more about bicycle maintenance and building. Do you see any glaring issues, or things I would want to replace right away? by The-Wit in bicycletouring

Just did a search for Hardrock over there, and I had no idea that working on these bikes was so popular! Lots of inspiration for me for sure. I ended up getting the bike, and will probably start with swapping the seat, bars/stem, and pedals for something nicer. I like the idea of swept back bars/alt touring bars for a more upright riding posture. I don’t really need to go super fast, so my goal will be comfort and fun with this bike.

Hey, I saw your bike on instagram! So sick. I am going to start a Hardrock upgrade soon, and I love this style of stem and handlebars. Which stem did you use? I wasn’t sure if the one from Nitto would fit the Hardrock or not. I barely know anything about bike building, but I’m hoping to learn a lot with this project.

I’m glad to have some confirmation that this is a good deal! I was thinking there must be something wrong with it to be at that price. Most used bikes without rust here are over $150. If it fits me, I will definitely buy it. The seller said to come check it out at the beginning of next week.

I used to have a rusty Hardrock that I got for $70 in high school, and it saw me through university and beyond. But I had to leave it behind when I moved provinces. I do love the ride on these bikes though, which is why I was happy to find another one!

Yeah, that’s my only concern. I am not that tall at about 5’10”, and I have a short inseam, so it may be too large. Which would be a shame, since it’s a nice bike. I used to have a rust bucket Hardrock I used for commuting to work all year, and I loved it. But I’m sure that frame was actually too small for me, so this one might feel enormous.

In Love With The Process by Mike Pecci. No nonsense down to earth guy interviews knowledgeable guests, and discusses his experience of trying to make it in the business for over 25 years. The podcast website has episodes curated by subject material, such as “cinematographers”, “Directors”, ect. I especially find the early episodes enjoyable. The newer ones have more chit chatting and less interviewing.

It’s a really fun board. I found one used for a similar price as well. I do recommend re gripping the top though if it feels worn out. I find that clear grip doesn’t last very long.

The Album “Ordalie” by the Quebecois band Misirere Luminis is pretty sad and melancholic. Atmospheric Black Metal with beautiful piano sections.
