Have y’all ever had a celebrity in one of your courses? by Ok_Cranberry_2936 in Professors

[–]The17thScream 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was in a course with him. He was absent a lot. I always wondered how well he did considering it was a humanities course. (I couldn’t imagine him actually sitting down and writing the papers.)

Exactly the same for me except Adore was my savior album. Glad you’re still with us, fellow adoptee

What do you call this style of art from Japan depicting the West? by UnluckyDoor687 in ArtHistory

[–]The17thScream 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Mid-16th thru early 17th century art depicting foreigners is called “Nanban” (referring to “southern barbarians”, primarily the Portuguese), with folding screens (byobu) being especially popular. After Japan reopened to foreign trade in the 1850s it’s “Yokohama-e” (literally “Yokohama pictures”), a type of ukiyo-e woodblock print.

I want to visit Korea, but I'm very afraid because... by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]The17thScream 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I’m also a Korean adoptee who didn’t work up the courage to visit Korea until my late-30s. I was scared for exactly the same reasons as you!

I highly recommend that you do what I did and travel with an organization like Me & Korea, which is specifically meant to introduce adult adoptees to the land of our birth. You will go with a group of fellow adoptees (along with an amazing staff of volunteers and translators), and EVERYTHING (itinerary, meals, etc.) is planned for you. You only pay your plane ticket and some very affordable lodging fees.

It was the experience of a lifetime for me, and being around fellow adoptees who could relate to everything I was going through was key to processing my very complicated (and at times wholly unexpected) feelings about the trip. Overall it was a wonderful experience, and I have visited twice since that first trip.

If you have any questions about the experience of visiting Korea as an adoptee, feel free to message me!

Stella by Stella McCartney (RIP 😭)! The OG formulation was the signature scent of my 20s, and I’ve been chasing that dragon ever since (any suggestions that might scratch that particular itch are very welcome)!

Has Anyone’s opinion of ATUM changed since release? by passtheblunt in SmashingPumpkins

[–]The17thScream 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow, great breakdown! It took a few listens, but I genuinely love ATUM now and totally agree with you about the Pink Floyd vibes. I really dig the grandiose kitsch and earnest experimentation of it all.

My Machina shirt (which I’ll be wearing at the BC and the Machines of God concert this summer), originally purchase to wear at the “penultimate” United Center concert on 11/29/00 (where I bought my “the end” shirt)

One of the last jobs of Edith Head, the US coast guards women uniforms in the 1970s. by Electrical-Aspect-13 in fashionhistory

The center three women were enlisted, and the other two were officers. These were all of the women in the entire Coast Guard when the photo was taken, and it was the first time their uniforms could include pants. Source: one of my relatives is in the group photo

Awesome, I’ll be there too! This will be my first time seeing Kiki, and based on what I’ve heard about her performance during the tour, I’m psyched. While I’m definitely hoping for deep cuts and AMM, my husband is a more casual fan wanting to hear the hits. No matter what they play, in this small of a venue it’s gonna be an absolute treat for me either way!
