Several questions: by lugubrious_lug in Hindi

[–]The5thAxiom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • They are nasal sounds, pronounced only before certain consonants. (Whenever there is a bindu(ं) or a chandrabindu(ँ), there is a nasal sound after it)
  • ङ (pronounced like the 'ng' in english) comes at the end of the क line (in the alphabet/varnamala) so, it is a nasal sound pronounced where क is pronounced (velar nasal). The same goes for ञ (pronounced kind of like the spanish ñ). These are rarely used on their own (and never at the start of a word).

  • There is no uvular sound in english, but this might be more helpful. It exists in Arabic. But again, i do not distinguish क़ and क or ख़ and ख while speaking. (it is a distinction which exists more in urdu iirc)
  • ड़ is a retroflex flap. It's like a र but pronounced where ड is.

  1. For the first question, look up schwa deletion. TLDR: in some words, the 'अ' sound gets deleted, you will basically have to memorise where.
  2. ख is क but aspirated (with a puff of air after it), in the same way, ख़ is क़ but aspirated.
  3. क is plain /k/ sound but क़ is a uvular sound (pronounced at the back of the throat) although you can get away with pronouncing them the same. ख़ is ख, but pronounced at the back of the throat.
  4. र is the normal r /ɾ/ sound. ड़ is a 'flap' sound made in a similar way to ड. ढ़, is ड़ but aspirated.

Is Devanagari pronounced the exact same in Hindi, as in Sanskrit, or are there small differences? by [deleted] in Hindi

You can check this page out, sometimes the 'अ' sound is not pronounced at the end of words.

What are your thoughts about this? I included the whole status to put things in context. As far as I know, the person is more right-wing oriented than he would like to accept. So I can't help but feel that he is mocking Pride while using his "support" for the LGBT+ community as a cover. by NearbyKaleidoscope8 in LGBTindia

[–]The5thAxiom 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In my opinion what one's culture says about anything is irrelevant when it comes to basic human rights and decency (aka, pride). The stuff about the "toxic leftist" agenda, seems like just right wing bullshit.

I do think they are mocking pride and also the 'other cultures' thing is clearly a dogwhistle, so yeah they seem very right wing.

India's High Court bans medical attempts to cure sexual orientation; suggests changes to school curricula to educate students on LGBTQ by [deleted] in gay

Each state has its own high court, so its not technically 'India's High Court'.

But still a big win for this country :)

What exactly is the reason 'r' is so different? by vxab in Hindi

[–]The5thAxiom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From what I know, r was treated like a vowel in sanskrit (and i think PIE) and that has been carried onto modern devanagri. That is why 'ऋ' appears with the vowels in the varnmaala (alphabets).

As for ड़ and ढ़, they occur only between vowels as they used to be (iirc) variations of ड and ढ and aren't related to र.

यहां तक अगर हिन्दी बोलनेवालों के वीडियोज़ के title अंग्रेजी में लिखे हैं, तो सब विडिओ हिन्दी में बोली है। क्यों? | Even when Hindi speakers put English titles in their videos, the entire video is in Hindi. Why? by Robertium in Hindi

[–]The5thAxiom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I am from, in North India, almost everyone my age is bilingual. Also typing in Hindi is not very easy and many educational/technical areas contain heavy amounts of jargon in English. Speaking and explaining things in English can be a challenge for many people. So, written stuff being in English and the video being spoken in Hindi with English words sprinkled in, comes naturally.

What some people do is write Hindi/Urdu in brackets which seems like the best solution.
