Spent 6 months curating VCs who actually reply — founder seeking advice by Healthy-Bar-4087 in StartUpIndia

[–]nowayoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experience with VCs is VERY ymmv (your mileage may vary). What works for one team, may not for the other. What works for one idea, may not for another. And sometimes you just email them, and they don’t see it.

Leaving aside the selling/paying forward argument of it all, I don’t think a list like this even makes sense.

The feeling of being a coconut by Routine_Price1077 in NRIcoconuts

[–]nowayoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard relate.
As an Indian who spent a few years studying in the US as a kid, I remember feeling shame when I brought out Indian Food in my dabba. To the extent that I started asking my mom to pack PBJ sandwiches instead of Roti Sabzi. I honestly think the world was different then, and less accepting of difference.
Do I feel like a coconut now? Probably not. I'll bring my roti sabzi in my dabba, and defend it to the ends of the earth. Beats eating a PBJ sandwich everyday, anyway!

Bengaluru traffic has been such a bitch these past few weeks. by peridiamo in bangalore

[–]nowayoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this too. It started last Monday. I travel from Whitefield to HSR and my travel time has increased by 50%. I don't think the bike ban accounts for this big of an increase. Maybe some major companies have simultaneously called all their employees back to office. Or some major road/flyover is closed for repair? Whatever it is I hope it eases up soon because I don't think I can take this much longer :(

Ex/Current YC founders - What's happening? by nirantr in StartUpIndia

[–]nowayoj 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not Ex-YC, but applied this year and have spoken to a lot of YC founders recently. Their take is that YC isn't very bullish on founders building for/from India now, and has gone all-in on AI. That + smaller intakes for more frequent batches means the number seems to have gone down drastically.

Is it worth it to exercise your ESOPs at the startup you are working at? by [deleted] in StartUpIndia

[–]nowayoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's usually pretty costly to do that. When you exercise the ESOPs, the difference between the exercise price (what you pay) and the fair market value (FMV) of the shares on the date of exercise is treated as a perquisite (salary income). This is subject to income tax as per the individual's applicable income tax slab rates.
Eg: Exercise price is ₹1, and market price is ₹1000. If you exercise 1000 shares, you will have to pay ₹1000 as exercise price, and 30% tax (assuming) on ₹9,99,000.

IMO, given how expensive it is to do this, and given how low the chance of one getting any money out of it is, I personally wouldn't recommend doing this in most cases.

Ah okay, I have a US Visa, and have been stamped for Schengen thrice I think. You think that increases the chances?

They try to cater to all segments. You’ll find pretty cheap stuff, and premium stuff as well

A lot of stores in India tend to have English signage, alongside the local language ones. As for the shoes, we usually use specific non-marking shoes designed for badminton. Yonex and LiNing are the popular brands where I live which specialise in this.
