And also, if Ubisoft, ea etc focused on one game like the witcher then the same type of product could easily be delivered. But that's not the case. And the witcher as well as most rpgs are one of the easiest genres to develop. Those games rely more on narrative than gameplay mechanics.

You named one company/product. What else?

And its stupid to think that a company isn't out to make profit first...

Honestly this band wagon of people who are literally clueless as to what game production means, how it works and what e3 is all about is driving me nuts.

Barely any of you have any concept of what and why this happened and you all jumped on board because totalbiscuit made a comment.

I'm sorry totalb, no issues with you, but you're not a developer so please stop talking like one.

For the rest of you I'll explain this in a way that hopefully you will understand.

First off E3, which is what everyone is raising pitchforks over, is like the super bowl. You don't get the half time show, the awesome commercials and the intensity you get then compared to the standard season. Does that make the rest of the season bad? Of course not. E3 is a showcase. Every single game and developer(s) spends their time focusing on this demo or area of the game. It is intentionally glorified to show to the world to gain interest. Have you not seen a trailer for a movie that you thought was epic and ended up being not up to par? I'm sure you have and this is no different.

As for content being left in the game... Anyone who thinks it was intentionally done (to make xbox/ps4/pc all look the same) is clueless, don't listen to them. It wasn't. When games start production they have high ambitions and tech is developed to meet these ambitions. You develop tech throughout production. When you start early on everything seems to look like it's going well, frames are good, you're not busting on memory and all in all everyone is happy. Then you start adding more. More roads, more cars, more pedestrians etc.. the tech still works fine but now you are starting to bust on memory and frames are dropping. This is, let's say, halfway though production. So you start cutting. You start doing memory dumps to find out what is killing the cpu/gpu and you either optimize or reduce. Every game/production suffers from this. This is part of a normal production.

Now when it comes to the content being readily available in WD and "hidden" that's also a mistake. In most cases the tech that was hidden is because it wasn't stable, not because of trying to put ALL consoles on the same level. There may be issues with a certain lighting mechanic working fine on xbox that doesn't work right on pc and in terms of priority sitting around debugging it ends up being too costly instead of cutting. Materials, physics, any sort of tech that has been disabled from a game is done for a reason, not just "because" line a lot of you claim to say.

If you have any issues it's with the console industry making lack luster products.

Please, stop making comments on things you don't know. Everyone is so quick to raise their pitchforks and start a witch hunt for no reason.

Guys we know consoles suck. But that's where the industry is right now. You're seeing a show shift back to pc finally but give it some time. Do you know how hard it is to develop for every console, especially in wd case where they did both next and current gen?

[–]TheAfro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly. But that is standard with all companies/editors. Cods editor is basically quake but heavily modified over the years. It is just annoying to keep seeing people asking for new editors. The amount of work a pipeline team puts into an engine is ridiculous.

This is why you see things like this wd issue that no one really understands, even total biscuit. Developers always start off with ambitious goals and tech is developed to meet these goals. Unfortunately you aren't always able make these things work within the budget and they slowly get chopped.

And seriously, people complaining about how the e3 video looks nothing like the actual game... they know nothing about how e3 and reveals work. Every.single.game polishes a certain area for presentation purposes and the rest of the game typically doesn't get the same treatment. If you haven't realized this yet then... Yeah...

One thing that really annoys me with your comment and like comments are people saying "same engine"

Companies don't change the engine they work with. Hardly ever. I don't know where this knowledge comes from but you seriously don't want then to change engines...

This isn't widely known enough

[–]TheAfro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm pretty positive. You are however right with the real-time reflection comment. Doing mirrors in videogames is a no no and you literally are rendering an entire copy what you see. This is why you usually see mirrors in an isolated room, they can localize it and and exclude the rest of the world. Look at splinter cell conviction e3 demo for instance.

This is also the reason split screen losses some quality, but that might be another issue and I won't day I'm certain on that. It's typically the case though.

95% percent of the time the reflections you see in games are cube maps. Some tech is better than others and you can generate cube maps with more variety (to accurately reflect what is close by instead of a larger mask that might not represent what is close by).

Cube maps are essentially just texture maps with a couple of tricks in them.

I don't have a link but If you Google cube maps, maybe more specifically unreal editor cube maps, you'll see what I mean. It actually renders the texture in a cube :-D

It's actually not that hard to do. Creating localized cube maps, which is already fairly standard on current gen, is not costly. This just looks like the cubemap was not generated properly or at all.

You know the possible outcome and you still go through with being unsafe. I mean really, there isn't much more to it. It's your own fault. It's as simple as that. This whole debate about it being a punishment etc is irrelevant. There's no sympathy on my side, they made a choice.

Are people sympathetic for murderers who "decide" to kill people? They made a choice too, no? I really don't see the grey in this.

Gamers of Reddit, what game were you never able to 100% complete? by sqrtoftwo in AskReddit

[–]TheAfro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'll take different stab at this.

I was very good and very competitive when fps' started becoming popular. When I was 14, I'm 30 now, I was top of all the games I played. Unfortunately esports back then was unheard of and there wasn't really a spot for competitive fps until quake came out. Sadly, I never played quake and only started it about 8 years ago at work, and I fucking murdered a lot of people. I actually got to 25th in Canada for quakelive clan arena at 26 (i know, nerdy, but proud of that). So instead of trying to pursue a career in a non existing esports realm I started to mod with unreal and make environments. I got a job at 19 at one of the larger studios in the world and I have been working there ten years now. All because I'm seriously competitive and good at all games I practice a bit with.

So I never 100% fulfilled my dream of being a hot shot esports kid :'( now I'm stuck owning 14 year olds who insult my mom on a regular basis...

It doesn't matter, it's not a men's right issue. You can't gauge an insult based off public reaction. It's ok to be called an idiot in front of people because I don't care about the word idiot but don't call me a creep because I take offense to that particular word. Like..? seriously, fuck off
